    Great tips! It also makes me think I should run a few practice strips to see how things behave, plus doing a test when using different fabrics (which is what we should do all the time anyway). Thank you!

      Absolutely! Every elastic and every fabric reacts a bit differently. Good luck!

    Another great teaching video. 💗I’ve not seen FOE (first Style) as you purchased with Minerva. Seeing this particular elastic just may change me from not a fan of FOE to giving it another try. I think that this could be a game changer in undie making process time as there’s only one pass with using the cover stitch. Thanks again!

      Kristi I thought FOE was your favorite?? I find it less scratchy to wear. I like how soft it is and yea: one step!!

      @Sew Sew Live I only use picot both on legs and waist. Could never properly form a relationship with FOE. 😂 Plush picot: 3/8” on legs and 3/4” on waist. I buy from Stitch Love Studio. They’ve been out of a lot of stuff since lockdown but it’s slowly coming in. Their shipping super affordable. I also like a firm picot as I like to be held in, snug and secure. Yellow in your sampling from Bra Builders way too lightweight for my likes. Very smitten with the Minerva FOE and may check it out. Thanks again!!!

      Ok that sounds familiar! I like how stretchy picot is but so much of it is scratchy! The ones you sent are so soft and I’m glad to hear your review and favorite. I’m jotting then down!

    Hide your serger thread tails in the seam by using a double-eyed needle to feed them back through the stitching.

    I struggle with FOE… I will give it another try with your techniques in mind. If you don’t measure and cut your elastic, how do you know how much to add to say…the legs and waist? In other words, how do you know that the elastic won’t be saggy around the legs? I am binge watching these today. So I am making right this minute cloth napkins for Christmas gifts. Such cute fabric! Off white background the aqua snowflakes and pink flamingos with (you guessed it!) red Santa hats on!!! Too cute!

      Hi Kathleen - I hope it’s ok if another subscriber weighs in regarding your question. The pattern instructions will always say the size of elastic to cut. You can follow their guidelines and instructions which will (generally speaking) have you sew it together in the round, quarter it, etc. My opinion only but wayyyyyy too much work and takes the fun out of sewing undies. There’s lots of variables in making undies and it’s taken me lots of practice to find which elastic I like the best (picot fan here - you can tug more), which pattern I like, etc. Once you’ve found the perfect pattern, fit, elastic method, fabric, you’ll never buy store bought again - at least that’s my experience. Lots of work but so worth it. Fold over elastic is just one method, and while my least favorite, the Minerva stuff Saremy bought is very interesting to me so I bought some yesterday to see if I like it. I hope this helps if just a little. @kristimakes

    • @SewSewLive

      Your project sounds so cute! And Kristi gave some great tips! In my experience, picot is more stretchy. I think you’ll have to experiment with what you buy. And following the pattern instructions will give you some clues. But cutting picot vs cutting FOE to the same length will most likely yield a different result. But it could be different from elastic to elastic. If you have knit scraps, I’d practice on it first. I have a couple pairs of funky underwear but they’re still wearable 🤣

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  3 года назад

      Absolutely weigh in Kristi! Your experience is valuable! I think I could stretch the FOE a bit more when I’m putting it on the waist. Info like the stretch of Picot and I can see why it’s your favorite. But I like how soft this foe is. (Incidentally, I found this particular one at Hart’s Fabric but they discontinued carrying it. When I stumbled across it at Minerva I snapped it up! It’s much softer than others I’ve tried. I hope you like it.)

      @Sew Sew Live Thanks again Saremy. I’m really looking forward to the elastic arriving and to see if I can work with it. If so, cover stitching it will be a game changer and save loads of time. FYI - Stitch Love Studio’s Stretch Tricot fabric is fantastic. I buy light sand or deep beige. Easy to work with, not hot and wears like iron. I haven’t seen anything like this anywhere else and I look all the time.

    What stich are you using on coverstitch ? Chain? Are you doing zigzag?

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Год назад +1

      The coverstitch is a twin needle stitch. So it sees two parallel lines. Underneath the stitching looks a bit like overlock. But the machine doesn’t trim or overcast the edge. If you have a t-shirt or leggings or anything knit, you’ll often see this stitch at the hem. It doesn’t do zig zag. But a coverstitch is a type of chai n stitch. Hope that helps!

    • @SewSewLive

      Pretty sure I get it from Bra Makers Supply. They’re in Canada. I think their Venus microfiber is what I got last time. It comes in about 6 colors. It’s very nice if it’s the same as what I got last time. It’s absolutely perfect.

    How do you determine the length of elastic, if using for a waist line?

    • @SewSewLive
      @SewSewLive  Год назад +1

      It depends on my elastic. But you can’t go wrong trying the elastic on you where it will sit. Leave yourself a little bit to hold on to while you sew. But often my pattern reflects my size so I just gently stretch elastic on to the waist as I sew.

      @@SewSewLive if I’m making a child’s garment without a pattern, how much shorter do I make the elastic?

      Try comparing it to a pair of existing underwear or try the elastic on the child.
