    I hope it all goes well, but I bet git will be a pain to use for the students. I see fossil-scm perfectly fitting there.

      students never actually use git themselves, emacs does it all for them!
      Of course, any vcs could be plugged in that provides authenticated communication with the server. git works well there with ssh keys.
