the creator of spring awakening studied metaphors for four years right before he wrote SA so this theory could very well be 100% true &i love it

It definitely depends on the production and the director but the one I was introduced to the show with made it pretty clear that "artist colony" was a euphemism for "she's super dead and her abusive dad killed her but we don't talk about it"
It wasn't until I saw another production where she was alive and interacted with other girls that I was like "wait what why I thought she was dead" and realized it wasn't intrinsically part of the script that she was supposed to be dead.

Yeah, she's most definitely alive because of that one scene. It honestly makes more sense for her to be dead in the play but she comes to Moritz's funeral and plants flowers at his burial with Martha so that's out. Also that note scene was actually elongated in the off Broadway version including a reprise of the cut song there once was a pirate. And of course it makes sense for her to be alive thematically. And in the play Ilse is sent by the masked man in order to be Moritz's chance at salvation, which he doesn't take. I most definitely would have loved to see that production. As much as a fan I am of this musical (I can recite the days it opened off Broadway I honestly know way too much) I've never seen a live production unfortunately. Sorry if this comment was a bit scatterbrained.

I always thought no matter whether Ilse was dead or not she was Moritz’s symbol of hope. It’s kinda self explanatory but in their scene: 1. She enters right before he can kill himself and basically tries to distract him by asking him to walk her home.
    2. Don’t do sadness is his artsy way of saying he won’t feel sadness when he’s dead.
    3. But Ilse counter argues that with Blue Wind basically saying the life has ups and downs just like the wind does (blowing through the thick corn, through the bales of hay) but as it goes from spring to summer life goes on and gets better. Basically a call for him to not commit suicide. i dunno that’s my thoughts

Everytime I listen/watch to 'Dont do sadness' I always thought to myself *'Ilse is the angel Moritz was talking about at 'Bitch of Living' the angel who's gonna help him handle ALL the sadness in his soul and also the fact that Ilse is always wearing white like an angel'*

I always thought that she was alive, but in that particular scene with Moritz she wasn't really there, it was just his imagination... But I guess I got this point of view from the original play and the expressionist characteristics. I guess it could be all of this, depending on the direction and stuff

This has been my theory for quite a while. I personally think she died in the snow, and was trying to save Moritz from his own death. That's why she was so upset when he wouldn't go with her.

also ilse is usually wearing white, similar to an angel
omg what if the letter thing was almost foreshadowing because we already know wendla is dead at that point (at least i’m p sure, it’s been a while since i’ve seen it) or at least is about to be, so if ilse is dead and wendla is too that means they would be in the same place probably and ilse could still tell wendla to go see melchior (idk if this makes sense or not sorry)

I don't think Wendla was dead at the time.

But Ilse is the one that finds Moritz's dead body, she comes back a few minutes after he killed himself. Also, she keeps the gun to herself (in my mind, to give Gustav Bawn a lesson). She also comes back and plants forget-me-nots on his grave. She's alive, guys.
