I wonder why the first part is called an improvisation, when it's written down. Maybe he wrote it down as he spontaneously played, or it's meant to have a spontaneous feel, like a rhapsody. Anyway, it's beautiful.
There are many notated pieces with the title of "Improvisation" in the classical genre. It's not meant to be taken literally, but more as a suggestion of the nature of the piece.

The Toccata reminds me of the 3rd movement of Prokofiev's 7th piano sonata.
