      actually thats specifically the advantage of this type of catapult. for example they are having carrier launched drones and those are pretty small and could be damaged by a steam catapultls acceleration.
      steam catapult has a minimum force it can push. this system can be very dynamic and push light loads.

    • @user-sg6zh6vr7h
      @user-sg6zh6vr7h 2 года назад +3

      @@KK_on_KK irc the main problem with steam catapults is they are every inefficient energy wise, a lot of the energy that could have been used for electrical power got used by the catapults, which wasn't much of an issue back then, but now that radars, sensors, laser defense, and other high energy systems are being implemented, electromagnetic is becoming necessary to operate the aircraft carriers, launch planes, and simultaneously keep up with the energy demand of it's systems.
      TLDR, conserving electricity is pretty important

    • @rileymannion5301
      @rileymannion5301 2 года назад +1

      @user-bu7mq9mw3p steam systems are prone to leaks and the steam is invisible so it just cuts through sailors like butter when a pipe bursts, also recharging the steam accumulator takes alot of time which limits the amount of planes that can be launched per hour

      +Downtime
      Why the put down Pal? Totally unnecessary. Ever think that other countries may just have different needs and uses for their carriers and will develop different systems? You know countries like the UK that invented carriers and perfected every development? Ramps make STOVL operations more effective as they can have higher take off weights. Without catapults.
      And yes we looked at EMALS (we actually started that development with Converteam) but we saw the costs, unreliable delivery and an unproven technology as risks too far. So we stayed with ramps
      And you talk about 'afford'? At least we in the UK are getting two 70,000 ton carriers capable of flying the F-35 for $10 Bn. The first is putting to sea next month.
      Better than paying $16 Bn (and counting) for ONE 100,000 ton carrier that can only sit in the James River, unfit for sea let alone combat throwing wheelbarrows in the river. Even the mighty USA can't afford THAT!

    In the first shot, the cart tumbled in midair and landed in the water back-end down, causing the cart to skip once on the water upon landing. In the second shot, the cart landed nose-down and didn't skip.

    Imagine being the crew of a small patrol boat and seeing a completely unarmed aircraft carrier and then out of nowhere you get hit by a truck flying toward you at 400kmh

    So do they recover the sleds and use them again?

    Now that's what I call a CIWS; like a railgun but slower, with lots of momentum. All you got to do is point the carrier in the right direction, then fire off anything!

    Do they recovery those test sleds from harbor bottom??

    • @CJOlin
      @CJOlin 11 месяцев назад

      They don't sink....and yes, they are recovered and reused many times.
      The same goes for the MK-IV submarine Torpedoes. The torpedoes aren't test dummies, but actual unarmed units, that are shot multiple times for training, but also as test runs for the torpedoes themselves.
      Every torpedo in the US Navy fleet stock is test fired at least three times before being loaded with armament.
