She was never an ice princess because she was an Ice Queen. She should have never expereienced the racism and discrimination she faced in the Olympics. I'm so glad she is in a better place in life and I wish her all the love, happiness & peace in life. Thank you for your peak performances Sureya Bonaly!
Yes, Surya was ROBBED many times in figure skating. While she was skating, it was said, " she doesn't skate in a straight like the other skaters". "Surya's skating is not polished like the other skaters". Criticism after Criticism.
It was Surya’s artistry that caused the lower scores. Artistry is a big part of final marks. I don’t see race affecting final scores. Many Asians reached the top of the podium.
She should have been given medals because she went above and beyond in her skills as a female ice skater. I've yet to see another female perform a back-flip on ice that is commonly done by male ice skaters.
Such a shame she was robbed of the top spot in many competitions due to bigotry and bias. A very talented athlete and "artiste". Looking back at her performances I feel that she presented her skating with artistry and grace. She should have been given joint first at the 1994 World Championships in Japan, in my opinion.
I don't think the professional figure skating world truly repected her or her talent at that time. Many coaches and commentators publicly mentioned she didn't fit the "ice princess" mold and many viewed her as a sideshow attraction for the sport. Very Venus and Serena vibes. I always thought she was amazing. I was glued go the TV everytime she would hit the ice.
I remember watching the Nagano Olympics. She has been struggling bit with her jumps (she was injured). And the commentators were running her down. I was so mad, because I loved her... and then she did the backflip. The commentators said she only did it because she knew she wasn't gonna be invited to the gala :/ Years later I admire that she knew she was gonna lose it, so she decided to lose in style. Plus her performance was much more memorable than the winner's anyways.
Definitely the strongest female skater ever; there just wasn’t much feminine grace. I like that she rebelled and showed her attitude toward the judges. She was a powerhouse athlete.
I watched many of her performances back in the day,and she was robbed so many times she was one of the best ever, glad she still have a love for the sport
She still looks so young! It’s strange that the same people that hated her in the 90s for no reason, are some of the same people who like her now. They see she’s a kind and friendly person. If only those same people would not wait 30 years to like her. For example, the hate they are directing at Simone, but when you tell them in the moment, that their hate IS NOT justified, they won’t accept it. You can’t watch a Simone video, without the racist comments. But in about 30 yrs, they will agree that they shouldn’t have hated her. They hated Mohammed Ali and others the same way! If only Love could catchup with the Hate, and overtake it. The answer is to stop the hate NOW in real time, because we might not be here in 30 years.
Surya is uniquely and wonderful made. With all of the backflips on one blade and stepped up with triple salchows she did in competition and professional skating, its a TOTAL BLESSING she was NEVER critically injured. Thank GOD. 🙏
The cruel remarks that former skater, Scott Hamilton made while he was the commentator for USA televisions networks. He criticized her for daring to perform a backflip. he criticized her mother was always being present and paying close attention to what was happening around Suraya. He had no kind words for her, and it way crystal clear why. Her parents and France can be very proud of her and she should be what skater should aspire to achieve. This is the first time that I have seen her interviewed and I like her even more.
Yes she is the greatest ice queen An was robbed all because of her race Hands down But my black queen I will always ❤️an respect you for yr talented contributions
Kinda funny she calls 17 "very young"... you have 13 year old Russian girls trying and doing quads... but by 17 they may be close to being done. Surya had long and amazing career.
Yes Surya was ROBBED many times when they scored her skating. They wanted to humiliate and stress her out so she would give up and stop skating. If one of the "ice princess" had created the backflip landing on ONE FOOT the judges would have accepted it with high scores.
She is the ice Queen, the greatest. Surya, we appreciate you and your work, we don’t care what the judges thought.

She does not need the medals, she is already a Champion and she always is!

@@sonyacotton4881 She won thee silver medals at the World Championships and five gold medals and one silver at thee European Championships.
@@RaymondHng - Thanks for the info. 👍
@@sonyacotton4881she won all kinds of medals all while having minimal skating skills so I think she did pretty well for herself.
She is so amazing. I love her.
Surya is an incredible athlete and I'm in awe of her on so many levels! I love you, Surya!

It was due to racism

The backflip was her KMA moment to the judges...and I loved every moment of it. So did the crowd.
Her one fault was her program was all jumps no continuity she was outstanding in jumps but judges look for more

I met Surya and her mother when she was still living in Las Vegas. They were both super sweet!
I watched many of her performances back in the day,and she was robbed so many times she was one of the best ever, glad she still have a love for the sport
THIS!!
Surya is the sweetest thing on ICE !!

The true people's champ. She was robbed of medals. Amazing women needs to be way more celebrated
The Queen of the ice 🧊 respect

So true
Now, it's time for the ULTIMATE BACKFLIPPING ON ONE BLADE AND A TRIPLE SALCHOW MOVIE in Honor of Surya Bonaly Before 2025. 🎬
She is and was brilliant!
Surya is a legend.

Sonique Cat she talked about her generation like 20 years ago...
I think the quad can only be done pre-puberty in girls. After the growth spurt, its hard.
Suyra you are so good i am speechless
Whoever was the camera man was making me annoyed😂 i was trying to get to watch their feet not realizing the dang camera man wouldn’t show🙄
The overpanning to Jason and his antics during the opening makes this so hard to watch. I thought this was about Surya. 🤓
You're so right! I was thinking the same thing. Her tying up his skates was the end for me. Too cringey!
💕💕💕
It was a cool judgment
Its nothing wrong with being angry! 😠 😡
Why have forgotten medals, when you can be remembered by millions instead.
I crack up him and the "walker" he actually did better without ;)
Amazing, talented skater who was not given her just dues. Racism. So disgusting.
So plane racism hold her from gold medals Still today it is going on in sports and everywhere. When will it stop
🙄
