ya know..I owned a Christian bookstore in 2005 and someone came in looking for books on Bonhoeffer and I had no idea who he was. This man was so shocked I had not heard of him, he told me I needed to read him and left. I was so curious that I began to reasearch him. I learned a bit about him, but recently the Lord gave me a dream where Bonhoeffer was referenced and I see now why, .Its time to for a new generation to rise up and live out our faith passionately as he did. God bless and thank you!

I just finished the book. A very good book and very well done.
Ideas have consequences. How could it be that a "good" German people could sit by while insanity creeped up on them and took over? Read this book and you may get a clue to what is NOW going in the United States of America.

I like EM but he uses DB as an apologetic for Christianity which i find slightly off
    putting.

I hesitate to speak for Metaxis, but to be fair to him, Christianity as a religious construct deals with pain and suffering directly, even for very young children, who are required to confront the Crucifixion. Atheists usually state that "the study of religion(s) are folly" because as soon as you study one of them, it seems pointless to consider others. To atheists, they are all absurd and unrealistic.
Christianity is vastly different: Evil, crime, suffering and horror is dealt with unflinchingly. Christian "indoctrination" starts out immediately with these and does not try to pretend that God doesn't see and allow them.
The question often asked by atheists is: "If God is so beneficent, how can he allow such terrible suffering?" And it is a confusing issue for sure.
I am not a Christian, but I can paraphrase it this way:
      1. Christianity acknowledges evil and suffering directly and does not try to push it aside in favor of trying to get "converts."
      2. God (apparently) recognizes evil and suffering and permits it to exist
      3. Death of a person is not the end of their existence as a consciousness
      4. There can be "rewards" for people who are willing to accept Christ that occur in the Afterlife
      5. Because your soul is "eternal," suffering you endure while alive is only transitory and in any case, God himself was willing to partake in it, even volunteered to do so.
Sorry for the over-simplification. Because this is about Bonhoeffer, we can say that he unreservedly accepted the classical Christianity without doubt or equivocation. We are shocked at his courage because it is absolute. He volunteered to exchange places with Christ, fully realizing what would happen to him when he made that choice. And it was a choice. He did NOT have to come back to Germany. We are in awe of him for good reason.
