Mac miller had the best alter egos. He made full albums as his egos and never mentioned it or affiliated himself with it so people didn't find out till years later.
Idk if you knew this about Earl , but he also had an alias named Sly Tendencies. I think there was an album or EP he released under that named called Kitchen Cutlery. I just remember running across it in like 2010.
Tyler the Creator has one of the best Alter Egos right now. He makes every album with a different alter Ego/character which is really cool thing to me.
You forgot to mention another thing about tyler on how each of his albums have alter-egos like for example bastard having dr tc and wolf having sam and wolf haley
Surprised to see nobody mention Kool Keith. He has so many alter egos with the most popular being Dr Octagone and Dr Doooom. With Octagone actually being killed by Doooom on one album before being revived on a later peoject
Kool Keith was the originator of the alter egos in my book (at least for hip hop). I took inspiration from that despite not being the biggest fan of some of his music.
Whether someone is a rapper or any other type of artist in the music industry, most of the time it just makes sense business wise to have an alter ego. Either an alter ego, or a slight name change (Ex. Kendrick Lamar vs Kendrick Lamar Duckworth ; Billie Eilish vs Billie Eilish O’Connel) Here’s why: Intellectual property. When an artist signs a deal, they’re signing away their masters, publishing, and intellectual property. In other words, the record label literally owns them. And that’s how 99% of artists operate today. But if you have an alter ego, you can keep your real name. Or if you wanna get close to it, you use a partial of your name, usually your first and middle name. But I also have a lot of respect for people who use their real names as their artist name. People like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, etc. Of course as said previously, if you sell yourself away, other people own your name and your intellectual property. And this idea can stretch outside the realm of the music industry/business. Great example: John Cena. That’s his real name, but it’s also his ring name. But every he goes out and does a movie or project outside the ring, because WWE owns his name, they get a cut from it.
Most modern deals have a clause that will specify "you, any extension of you including aliases" - people caught onto this back in the day with Prince. Record labels now protect themself from you rebranding or doing a name change to nullify contracts. It's unfortunately not as just changing your name anymore.
I'm aware almost nobody knows him but the late Hardy Fox, who co-founded the experimental band The Residents, worked under loads of alter egos in addition to his real name. His website lists 18 different pseudonyms! However, not all these names were for music. Some were for other tasks he did like writing and graphic design.
I figured someone like madlib just wants the music to speak for itself. The more well known you are, the more willing people are to listen to your music and compliment it, regardless of quality.
except the “geedrah” made my teeth itch when its clearly printed on the album as geedorah which mf doom practically gave everyone the pronunciation key. the monster in godzilla is called king ghidora coming from the japanese word for hydra, hidora (pronounced hee-doh-rah) 😊
Surprised you didn’t mention Nicki Minaj who has some of the most culturally iconic alter egos. She has a LOT but most notably Roman (aggressive) and Barbie (bubble pop higher pitch voice). She’s definitely first to come to mind when someone mentions rap alter egos. Both Roman and Barbie are in her famous verse on Monster and she has songs and albums named after them
Nah the name was supposed to be ‘makaveli the don’ but the people who did the album art had a misunderstanding; the name of the album was supposed to be ‘killiminati: the 7 day theory’, but since there was this misunderstanding the album name changed to ‘the don killumimati: the 7 day theory’ and the name got shortened to just ‘makaveli’
flying lotus also has a radio station in GTA V called flylo FM so many many many people have surely at least heard him there if not the rest of his catalogue
alter egos in music are always cool, its hard to fuck it up its just an interesting topic, my favorite is dante red, unfortunately tho dante is canonically dead rn but we did get a snippet not long ago.
Kool Keith is a good one he’s got a bunch too… Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis, Tashan Dorsett…he even has some inside of projects like Mr. Gerbik 😂 it’s a lot of fun Kool Keith is severely underrated in my opinion

Baby Keem is Kendrick’s “alter ego”. Like the songs Kendrick makes but knows he can’t drop cus ppl expect some deep lyrical shit he gives to Keem as reference tracks. So that’s how he kinda expresses the more playful, trap side of his art
Holy shit I thought I was the only one who thought this. Keem is dope and his own person for sure but I agree one thousand percent. Keem is like if Kendrick just messed around
One that I really wanted too see was kid cudi's mr. Rager the first time we see him is in Man on the Moon 2 and it's about how Cudi's emotions overwhelming him and he just starts hurting other people around him that's Mr Rager
yung leans got a couple alter egos aso i know that this is a rap channel but you could make a 20 minute video on all the different projects diplo has been a part of over the years
Yo I just found out that Mac Miller released music under Larry Lovestein and the Velvet Revival. Honestly so cool. For any of you hardcore rap fans both Kendrick and Cole have music out on spotify under the names King Kendrick and King Colee. NF also has music out under the name Nate Feuerstein!!!!!!
8:13 bruh you don't need to grab someone from a whole other dimension just so you could have someone from a place that rap is banned in. you could just visit my country instead 💀
Yesterday's new quintet is a more interesting concept then quasimoto. Its a band with seperate members but all one guy working as each and just a guy with a pitched up voice. But both these aliases are different in what makes them " interesting" so its not really somethimg to compare. Yes its amazing that madlib is each member of this band, but (and i think its just bias) quasimoto is a like a character from an adult swim pilot.
