I've tried Hartshorn for the heart, Milk thistle for the liver, Ginkgo for the brain, and Cayenne for circulation. I've even taken digestive enzymes, with bile salts, to help with digestion. Now I'm hearing about this, not so mysterious nutrient, that was added to cat food and Red bull, and had a supporting role in some workout supplements, that seems to play a significant role in all these areas of metabolism. I started taking it sporadically, some years ago, because it had something to do with calcium regulation, which was an issue, with my messed up parathyroids, which control calcium levels. But I never took it really seriously, thinking it was a miner player. Apparently I was wrong. It's only been a few weeks, but it's showing some improvement in some of the areas that its said to influence, like energy, anxiety,, and general cognition .😌✌🏼✨
It makes my muscles much much less sore from exercise combined with magnesium and B6 in P5P form only. Absolutely loved this deep dive into taurine's longevity benefits! 🐾 It's fascinating how a simple amino acid can pack such a punch in the anti-aging arena. Who knew that something so small could potentially add years to our lives? The studies you mentioned really highlight taurine's role in metabolic health-it's like the unsung hero of the supplement world! And let’s be honest, if taurine can help us dodge the aging bullet while keeping our blood sugar in check, it might just be the fountain of youth in a bottle. Also, I can't help but chuckle at the thought of mice living their best lives with a 25% lifespan extension-talk about a rodent retirement plan! 🐭💼 Looking forward to your new book, *The Longevity Leap*! If it’s half as enlightening as this video, I might just need to stock up on taurine to keep up with all the wisdom! Keep up the great work, Siim! 🌟
Taurine is interesting. But we don't know much about how it works in the body. This is an idea, from a research article in Nature: "The hypothesis of taurine as mitochondrial matrix buffer The mitochondrial matrix as biochemical reaction chamber Stabilising the pH gradient by the presence of a buffer compound like taurine in the mitochondrial matrix transforms the matrix into a biochemical reaction chamber with a slightly alkaline pH 8.0-8.5. It is well established that several important biochemical processes occur inside the mitochondrial matrix, e.g., all the reactions in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation and some of the reactions in the urea cycle." We also know that cats can't produce taurine and have to get it from their food. If they don't get it, they get blind and have heart failure. We humans creates enough of it not to show any disease, but probably not enough for optimal health. If taurine works by creating a good osmotic environment in multicellular animals, it explains why it's so hard to understand it's effect. It's pretty indirect! It's an amino acid, but not a building block of our proteins like other amino acids. That it's produced in animals shows it's needed. But what's it's optimal level?
I started taking the recommended dose. 500mg. I now take 2000mg per . I feel terrific and think you should increase the dosage. Increases stamina and endurance

A supplement being amazing and me taking it don't have to be mutually inclusive. There are dozens of amazing supplements out there. Do I have to start taking all of them?

I'm 43. It definitely increases exercise performance. The effect is subtle, similar to taking creatine. I take 1g a day. On days I'm playing sports, I'll take 4g that day.
The title of the video seems click-baity and misleading given the conclusion. As you implicitly acknowledge yourself: there seems to be no downside to supplementing taurine other than the cost, and potentially quite a lot of upside. One "use case" you didn't mention is to counter taurine deficiency which is common in older humans. The older you get, the more sense it makes to supplement. The quantity you supplement should probably gradually increase in old age, too. Supplementation seems the winner when compared to eating lots of tuna, since tuna and other fish often contain more heavy metals than you'd want to ingest. Not sure about bivalves and seaweeds. And obviously, this isn't just a dietary matter. Killing sentient fish so you can get your pRoTeiN and taurine seems like a poor ethical choice. By buying wild-caught fish you also support the industry responsible for 50% of plastics in the oceans, almost all of which comes in the form of nets. Those are the nets that seals and dolphins get caught up and drown in. 5-6 capsules of 1g of taurine daily doesn't seem so awful either. You can spread them out over each day. So... maybe you should re-write your take ("Why I'm not taking it")?
Hi, thanks for the feedback. In my videos I differentiate between what I personally do and take versus what I think is effective and has evidence. Taurine has evidence that it works in a certain population and like I said the clinical trials are done on people with poor metabolic health. A lot of people fall under that umbrella. I don't, which is why there's less expected gains for me from taurine. Maybe it'll change in the future, but for now it's not my priority.
Taurine 6g basically reset my satiety control. I took it with whey protein while exercising 5-7h per week and with BMI 28-9. It lead to huge BMI reduction in a few months. Not sure about the mechanisms though.
@@User98681 My initial theory was that taurine simply worked by decreasing appetite and therefore changing energy balance. Yet there seems to be a noticeable increase in fat oxidation as well which may explain some of the effect on weight, too: ”fat oxidation increased by 40% with 6 g of taurine (p < 0.05), suggesting that a higher dose was necessary to stimulate lipid metabolism. Furthermore, a decrease of 4% was observed in the respiratory quotient when compared to the placebo group, suggesting a relative intensification in lipid and beta-oxidation [54]. Moreover, our results showed a glycerol threshold of around 0.40 µm/dL for both TAU supplementation doses, making it evident that the increase in glycerol levels was an effect promoted by the exercise session; however, this was in association with the results of the lipid oxidation, which were superior to the placebo. Thus, our data indicate that taurine promoted an additional effect on lipid oxidation.”

If it were beneficial to take taurine, then why isn't there stronger evidence for taking it? There is money to be made so if they can prove it they would.
Probably because humans create enough taurine, at least when young, to not show any deficency. We probably need more of it from food. But if we don't get enough of it, we blame our frailty on old age. It's of course not just lack of taurine, but many other things too that makes us not age well. Taurine hasn't been researched enough to know how it works. That makes it difficult to find out how much we need.
No, it's just as heat insensitive as other amino acids are. Taking it in a hot beverage is OK, if that's how you like it. I don't heat it, though, because there's no reason to do that.
I tried Taurine back in 2020. The result was not good. The result was heart palpitations. I never took it again after that experience. I do not recommend it because the side effects exist and are not well documented.
I take taurine along with l-arginine to inhibit my exercise induced supra ventricular tachycardia, which I found support for in a study. For me it reduces the risk of arrhythmia.

Why would this video and the person speaking rule out taking touring just based on a few rat studies and metabolic health when touring has dozens of other directly positive ameliorative effects....????
If you are getting most of your taurine from fish, I'm afraid thats bad news in terms of microplastics. I would eat grass fed meat instead and supplement krill Omega 3 and Taurine to avoid the high microplastic content.
Additionally, most fish are farmed and the wild fish are being rapidly depleted. Grass-fed beef is more sustainable. I pursue the same strategy- supplement with 4 grams of omega 3 and take 6 grams a day of taurine a day.
From the various studies I've seen, seafood and grains and root vegetables are the worst categories. From this I would infer that grain fed meat is worse than grass fed meat. Grain fed meat may well be as bad or worse than seafood. Of course there is also a complex bioaccumulation effect with fish (just like with avoiding mercury) so the lower down the food chain the fish is the better.. i.e. whitebait, anchovies better option than tuna, cod, etc.

Increases my endurance.
It makes my muscles much much less sore from exercise combined with magnesium and B6 in P5P form only. I have a chronically too low LDH level (a rare genetic disorder likely), which causes my muscles to get extremely sore if I in any way overexercise. DMG (the only glycine form I can take without adverse effects) does the same for my body.
I liked and subscribed! I’m 32 and am now getting into longevity. I’ve been following Bryan Johnson’s protocol for about a year now but am happy to see others experimenting with supplements as well. Also, congrats on your high ranking on the rejuvenation Olympics board!
Welcome aboard!
Why did you decide to follow Bryan Johnson’s protocol?
@@NateB Probably because he gets the most publicity of anyone in the longevity world. SIIM is great but he is also young so some of the things he does or does NOT do aren't applicable to older people (for example about certain supplements he has said: "I'll start taking it when I'm over 40").
I add it to my green tea in powder form. It has no discernible taste and dissolves easily. I’m older, physically active, insulin resistant and don’t eat seafood every day, so I’m in a category where it could help.
try gymnema sylvestre for that insulin resistance
Looking forward to your new book, *The Longevity Leap*! If it’s half as enlightening as this video, I might just need to stock up on taurine to keep up with all the wisdom! Keep up the great work, Siim! 🌟

Taurine is interesting. But we don't know much about how it works in the body.
This is an idea, from a research article in Nature:
"The hypothesis of taurine as mitochondrial matrix buffer
The mitochondrial matrix as biochemical reaction chamber Stabilising the pH gradient by the presence of a buffer compound like taurine in the mitochondrial matrix transforms the matrix into a biochemical reaction chamber with a slightly alkaline pH 8.0-8.5. It is well established that several important biochemical processes occur inside the mitochondrial matrix, e.g., all the reactions in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation and some of the reactions in the urea cycle."
We also know that cats can't produce taurine and have to get it from their food.
Thank you for the video - Poor mouse 😢
I started taking the recommended dose. 500mg. I now take 2000mg per . I feel terrific and think you should increase the dosage. Increases stamina and endurance

Yes, I take it in coffee, along with glycine, which is sweet and replaces sugar, with no blood sugar spike
@@DinoFancellu I'm trying decaffeinated coffee with creatine, since it dissolves well and masks the taste well. I have not actually tried the taste of taurine since I have only taken that in pill form, but adding it to coffee sounds interesting. If you have the MTHFR gene mutation, then there's a risk the homocystein level gets too high, which can lead to many diseases from cancer, to cardiovascular diseases, to Parkinson's, sclerosis, schizophrenia, diabetes etc Taurine lowers the critical homocysteine level.

I have had my homocystein level measured, and it was too low but I do also take high dosage B12 and methylfolate. Can't say what it was like before that. Only started taking taurine after I had it measured. Hope, it has not made it even lower?

I don't really like how there's so much focus on longevity nowadays. Everyone wants to live longer, ofc, but quality of life matters a lot too. Taurine has many other benefits that aren't related to longevity per se

Bryan Johnson spends $2M/yr on doctors supervision and optimizing longevity. His longevity ratio is 0.72. Are you saying all he has to do is take taurine and he can reach .75?
I take taurine, magnesium and creatine blended into low carb blueberry smoothies....
I also blend larger batches and potion then out 2-3 days in advance. Do you think there's any issue with these supplements being blended into a smoothie and sitting for 2-3 beats before consumption?

Nice one 👍
Thanks ✌️
I was taking 2g and I'm gonna bump to 4g. Raw powder is cheap.
Thank you 🙏
Taurine 6g basically reset my satiety control. I took it with whey protein while exercising 5-7h per week and with BMI 28-9. It lead to huge BMI reduction in a few months. Not sure about the mechanisms though.
You lost fat just taking taurine? Did you change diet? Did you put on muscle?
@@User98681 My initial theory was that taurine simply worked by decreasing appetite and therefore changing energy balance. Yet there seems to be a noticeable increase in fat oxidation as well which may explain some of the effect on weight, too:
”fat oxidation increased by 40% with 6 g of taurine (p < 0.05), suggesting that a higher dose was necessary to stimulate lipid metabolism.
@@User98681 No change in muscle afaik. My diet was pretty much identical. The main difference was in satiety control. The difference was massive.

If you are getting most of your taurine from fish, I'm afraid thats bad news in terms of microplastics. I would eat grass fed meat instead and supplement krill Omega 3 and Taurine to avoid the high microplastic content.
As per a recent study, all proteins including mear contain microplastics. Fish is not higher than meat
@@AncestralFuel4 grams omega3 daily? Isnt this too much?
