Personally, I think that in Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon’s and Anakin and Shmi’s cases, both Obi-Wan and Anakin did not know about Force healing. I also think that the Jedi May have adopted the “rejoice in those who return to the Force” philosophy(like what Yoda described in ROTS) and abandoned the Force healing technique at some point. This would explain why Anakin in ROTS wanted to become a master and discover the secret of Force healing from ancient Jedi texts that only Masters could access.

I have a theory on Force Heal: time and the severity of the wound.
    Time:
"It's too late." Qui Gon's first words to Obi Wan immediately after Obi Wan defeated Maul on Naboo.
Maybe Obi Wan knows Force heal but the time he took to defeat Maul was far too long. This also explains why Obi Wan, who shows patience even as an apprentice, was trying his fastest to defeat Maul when Qui Gon was stabbed.
On the battle of Geonosis Arena, Obi Wan was seen putting his hands on a fallen Jedi. My theory, he was trying to use Force heal but it was too late.
    Severity of the wound:
The serpent's wound was not severe enough to take its life, thus it could be healed.
Kylo Ren was healed by Rey because Rey immediately healed him after she stabbed him.
Ben Solo was able to heal Rey because it was immediately after she was taken out.
    Qui Gon's wound was fatal.
Shmi's wounds were fatal and she was barely hanging on by when Anakin arrived, maybe Anakin doesn't know the ancient texts.
Luke couldn't save Anakin because Anakin just wanted to die.

The transferring life from one to another makes it less OP, and also links it back to another earlier instance.
Anakin transferred life from The Daughter to revive Ahsoka in The Clone Wars.
This new description pretty much matches that scene, but with Anakin as an intermediary since the other participants were both dying.

"To cheat death is an ability only one has achieved. But if we work together we might be able to find the secret" Palpatine to Darth Vader episode 3. This line alone it's what JJ Abrams used to explain why Ray and Emperor Palpatine were able to use the force to cheat death but no one has beforehand. It's a talent very few has been able to master. Also, the Jedi don't look to stop death. They see death as a transition into becoming part of the force. I quote Yoda's advice to Anakin regarding death "mourn them do not, miss them do not. Rejoice in their transformation into the force".

Hot take: as it was something she gained out of the Jedi texts that weren't even digital, it's quite possible that the method of Force healing she uses just wasn't known by the Jedi Order of the Galactic Republic Era. This can preserve any canon they keep from Old Republic about Force healing (since the games use it a lot, especially SWTOR) while taking a different spin on it again.

I think the first mistake was to make her so powerful right in the beginning, or announce that she is so powerful....What's the difference between Rey & Broom boy? Once we are introduced to broom boy, towards the end of the film we see him use the force effortlessly & at a really young age.....This gives precedence to him being powerful at a later age without any rigorous training since he has shown his abilities at a young age(Anakin Skywalker).....We don't get this with Rey.....Nothing in the movie hints at her being force sensitive until the scene with that stormtrooper because Kylo tells the audience while talking to Snoke that The girl is strong with the force yet untrained??? We as the audience don't see this at all.....I don't count the forceback vision as it is exactly that(A vision).....But after many retcons we now know that she downloaded her powers from Kylo when he entered her mind😂🤣WTF???

I hate the broom boy at the end of the last jedi. It was one of my biggest gripes with that movie, it made people think, oh whos this kid thats powerful at a young age like anakin and you can't have that at the end of part 2 in a trilogy i know theres still force sensitive people in the universe but there's no time to flesh out that story and it just boggles my mind that there was no set plot points or plan for the whole of the sequel trilogy. sorry for my rant but as much as i love ryan johnson he really screwed 8 and left JJ Abrams to pick up the pieces for episode 9.

Another thing I’m going to assume.. forgive me if I’m just “making excuses” but.. the abilities that Rey learns in the Ancient Jedi Texts, could possibly be some of the earliest abilities that force wielders could learn, that over time, as the Jedi order evolved and settled on a very specific code, they had banned. I would think that the Jedi within the order we know, Yodas order, would believe that the ability to heal another would go against nature.. since they fear not death, and embrace becoming one with the force. Destiny and all that. So.. you’d think right, if these healing abilities were in an old book, why wouldn’t the order have the knowledge and teach students these abilities? Like, why doesn’t Anakin or obi-wan have this power? They were some of the most powerful Jedi in the order. Because it went against the belief. They wouldn’t teach anyone those abilities. I’m sure Yoda and other masters knew of such power. But it went again their very understanding of the force.
So now.. the order has been destroyed.. and the old ways are gone. Rey has no code to live by. So if she decides to go deep within the texts to learn abilities than she will. There is no code to stop her. And this is what makes the sequels more interesting in a way. What would these Jedi do if they had to rebuild the order? And we kind of see that perspective, and powers that we never would know exist if the order survived.
Personally I love it. I love it all.

Honestly, this concept is interesting and I see how it was needed (IN A WAY) to drive the story forward BUT the fact that it creates way too many inconsistencies just doesn't really sit right; I can understand that Obi-won wasn't able to use it, I can partially overlook Yoda not using it BUT (1) Its in the jedi texts and none of the jedi knew about it? Luke, Obi-Won, Yoda...? (2) so you're telling me Anakin Skywalker... born from the force, didn't possess the ability to do something like this...? I personally think if they wanted to go with this concept then they should have explained it as something to do with Ben and Rey being a dyad... you know energy "like life itself" they even explain the dyad as being just that... so why not avoid plot holes and disgracing Anakins fall even more and just stick to the dyad as an explanation =/ I mean even Palpatine healed himself using their dyad.... so why cant they willingly use it to heal things and people if they wanted to given they are "life itself"... Just a thought.

Think about this Anakin's entire fall to the dark side was because of his inability to stop his loved ones from dying. He could do nothing to save his mother in Episode 2. Then he had visions of Padme's death in Episode 3 thus his obsession to save her grew so much that he turned to the dark side to try to learn how to save her
The entire Prequels and Anakin's tragic story was because he couldn't save the people he loved from dying. In Rise of Skywalker Rey saves Ben from dying by touching him and then Ben just resurrects Rey from death by lightly touching her stomach for 5 seconds...

Can someone please explain to me what the hell "life essence" is and why it's a thing in Star Wars now? Star Wars has "the force", "the living force", "the cosmic force" and midiclorians which facilitate a connection and control of the force. What the hell is happening when someone "transfers some life essence"? Are they giving them some of their midiclorians? I had always assumed that some limited force healing could be accomplished by using the force to support and promote someone else's natural healing mechanism. I like to think that Jedi masters knew how but it was one of their secrets. This would ironically bring about their end as the ability was what anakin desires and turned against the order to obtain. This would go along nicely with the prequel vibe, especially shown in the clone wars, that the Jedi were just as big a part in their fall as the Sith were. Building on this idea, we could see Vader discover this later and reaffirm his place as a Sith through the rage of the Jedi indirectly killing padme and causing his fall. As for how Rey and Ben know how to do this... meh

Presumably a lot of things Force related come down to the will of the force as well, as if to say you wouldn't know it anyway unless you were open to it. Anakin wouldn't have been able to Force Drain only because he hadn't been taught it as a Sith, but the potential to do it would require him to also know it was even possible which Palpatine would likely have hidden from him if there was even a chance he could have figured it out at all, which would make Palpatine pretty useless to Anakin.

Like I keep saying what is everyone about. Rey even said the same thing in the movie as well. Hiw can it be a fix if something that there to begin with

Pretty much every answer we have gotten CONFIRMED so far from the book could already be INFERRED from the movie by the clues that were already there. The book only gives confirmation to things we could already have figured out on our own, for those that indeed want confirmation. We already had the WHO and WHAT. Now we just have a confirmation of the HOW, but it was already possible to figure out from the movie itself.
