ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS, DEANNA AS ALWAYS IS AMAZING, I HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND STILL NOBODY COMES CLOSE TO DEANNA, GOD BLESS HER 92 THIS DECEMBER, SHE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT... XXXXX
great video .... am so glad to have found it. We need more Rodgers & Hart stuff on YT! Durbin's voice is tremendous ... great control and right on to those notes ....
Unless something is seriously wrong with me, she manages, at 1:24, to sing in unison with herself, on a note with heavy vibrato, and control her voice so perfectly that it sounds like 1 singer- in fact, I saw this many, many times before even noticing. Also note how she sings both parts of a soprano/contralto duet just as naturally.
This is how this song should go -- it is a wonderful waltz, and quite a sophisticated melody. We don't hear tunes like this anymore from Broadway. Perhaps this is because today's composers don't know what the black keys are for.
I play Theatre organ in theatre style, I have just discovered a Rodgers & Hart sheet music book and am working my way through the 60 or so songs in it. Now I have been playing for 40 years and although I knew a few of them I had no idea Rodgers penned so many with Hart. Can you really think most modern pop music is endowed with any quality ? People of Richard Rodgers talent are no longer around, excepted Andrew Lloyd Webber and perhaps Elton John on some pieces and few others. There are some pretty waltzes around if you go back into the past. There are also some not so good as well again from the past. For some reason I like 30's to 40's music, most are melodic and are easy to listen to. A lot of today's so called music gives you a headache and is certainly not pleasant.
I LOVE the internet. I've heard this on and off for my entire lifetime and loved it, but just saw it in Sabrina, looked up all the Soundtracks in IMDB for it, and finally found it. How did intellectuals and aesthetes exist before the internet?
Hello Robert. Billy Wilder must have been a Rodgers/Hart fan, because he used "Lover" and "Isn't it Romantic" multiple times. In addition to "Sabrina", he used them both in "The Major and the Minor", a delightful movie starring Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland.
Cuanto tiempo me tomo encontrar esta JOYA!Una de mis composiciones favoritas y Que interpretacion! Thanks to internet we can feel the best of times. My time was the 50"s and 60"s (which I love)but my favorites are the decades before.Gracias!
The Angels will indeed have Deanna someday, but for now she is still alive and well, having just turned 87. She is retired, living just outside of Paris.
Thank you so much Violin thief for all the wonderful Deanna clips I really appreciate them I am probably the biggest DD collector I am running out of room I have so much :)
Two interesting thoughts... 1. This is a very early example of an artist double-tracking their vocal, which really took off as a recording technique in the 60s following the likes of Buddy Holly. I wonder how many other early examples there are? 2. I wonder whatever happened to the original recording that she sang along to - the version with only one vocal on it. I've certainly never heard it on any of the released collections.
As Howard Thompson said: "The world's worst, and don't you miss it!" Absolutely hilarious send up of Jeanette Macdonald. From lovely kitsch to horrifying narcissism in a decade! A low camp classic, and why is she incessantly looking at her derriere? What a scream. I think I'll have to watch it again!!!!
Wonderful song.....please can someone tell me if exsists anywhere the Alfred Hitchcock's rear window's instrumental version? is that a Franz Waxman arrangement only for that movie sequence or is it an official recorded version that i can take somewhere? thanks!
I just watched the 1932 film. The Lorenz Hart lyrics were different: Lover, when you find me Will you blind me With your glow? Make me cast behind me All my Whoa! [as if commanding her horse!] Kiss me, he'll be saying Gently swaying I’ll obey Like two children playing In the Hey! [as if to the horse again] He'll be my lord and my master I'll be a slave to the last He’ll make my heartbeat go faster Not too fast! []to the horse] Lover, when you take me And awake me I will know Lover, you can make me Love you so Watch the film here: ruclips.net/video/DELfdEddEPE/видео.html
I'm playing this piece as a jazz trombone solo - except the main melody (in this video from begining to 1:15) is over in about 1 minute, then it's 3 minutes of pure impro =)
Again stuck for words, blown away by such a beautiful and talented woman.. x love you always. The Angels are lucky to have you up there with them.

Deanna passed away in France at age 91 April 30 2013.
What a beautiful lady.
What an angelic voice... and now she can share it with the other angels.

Modern music is worthless in comparison to stuff like this.
