The Ocean Strainer is an open-source design by MAS Holdings. The 130-foot-long device traps plastic in rivers and canals before it makes it to the ocean.
MAS Holdings is a global apparel vendor based in Sri Lanka. It has set up traps across Sri Lanka, and the plastic is recycled into things like polyester fabric. So far, MAS Holdings and its partners, plus other organizations using the design, have put 9 of the traps into use.

Simple genius idea, I hope the design spreads across the most plastic polluted regions of the world.

Free idea. Monetize recycling, and every single homeless person will clean up after the ungrateful and every poor person who didn't care will have good reason to never throw trash away. It would be a community project because it already exists in the form of a pop can drive. Well now we could have trash drives. Because plastic is petroleum so it can be reverted back to petroleum. Lowering gas prices and cleaning the earth.

Since this video was posted, 28 strainers have been installed along the western and southern coast of Sri Lanka and to date theyve collcted upwards of a 1,000,000 Kg of waste.
At some strainer social entrepreneurs were trained to sell certain plastic materials to registered recyclers. One of these entrepreneurs made a 100,000 LKR in just a couple months from only collecting plastic and reselling.
