  • About The Programme
The IMRO | RTÉ CO Scoring For Film Programme was established in 2001 in partnership with Filmbase, Screen Skills Ireland and The Contemporary Music Centre. The underlying ethos behind this programme is to encourage emerging Irish film producers and directors to commission composers to write and produce original scores when they are creating their film and TV projects. Each year 4 composers and 4 filmmakers are selected to participate in the programme which results in the scores for their short films being recorded by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Each year films featured in the programme have gone on to win awards at various prestigious national and international film festivals. Previous composers who have participated in the programme include: IFTA Award winning composer Greg Magee, David Downes (Celtic Woman), Liam Bates, Louise Heaney.
The recording session was engineered, produced and mixed by Brian Masterson. Brian is one of the pioneering recording professionals in Ireland. He was one of the founders of Windmill Lane Recording Studios and oversaw the re-invention of the studio when it moved to Ringsend Road. During his time with Windmill, he worked with a Who's Who of Irish and international music, including Planxty, Clannad, The Chieftains, Shaun Davey, Altan, Van Morrison, Christy Moore, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shania Twain, Norah Jones and Katie Melua -- among literally hundreds of others. He has also worked on dozens of movies, including Agnes Brown, The General, The Grifters, My Left Foot and The Field.
Composer Mentor and Music Supervisor for the programme is Fiachra Trench. Fiachra is credited with the string arrangements on the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues. Other artists he has worked with include Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Art Garfunkel, Sinéad O'Connor, The Corrs, Phil Lynott (including the orchestral arrangements on Lynott's solo hit "Old Town"), Sweet (arrangement and piano on early hits), Joan Armatrading and Paul McCartney. He taught McCartney's late wife Linda to play the piano. In 1996, he conducted the French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, "Diwanit bugale", composed and performed by Dan Ar Braz.
He has scored and composed music for films including Pearl Harbour, The Boxer, The Tailor of Panama and The Ring. In 2006 he reworked Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" for the 2006 AIB Ryder Cup advert "Epic" directed by Enda McCallion.
The recording session for the 2018 programme took place in March in Studio 1, RTÉ Radio Centre.
