When I retired I happily smashed my alarm clock and told my kids to not call before 10:30. My intent is to do what makes me happy which means NOT listening to anyone who tells me quit wasting my time. It's my time & I'm wasting it by sitting on the front porch with my husband, drinking coffee & admiring the nature we are surrounded by. You may have perfectly good ideas for someone who likes to have schedules or be efficient & that's great, I'll enjoy "wasting" time!

Personally, I find the TV concerns to be kind of ridiculous. If I'm at home the TV is probably on. So what? It's just background noise, white noise. Doesn't mean I'm just sitting there glued to it. I'm still doing things around the house. If something of interest comes on I might stop & pay attention. I find it kind of comforting.

Do you get out of the house or do you have friends over?
I have a few friends that always have the TV on. It’s background noise they say and I find their attention is divided when I’m over so I really would rather visit them by meeting them in a restaurant or café, because I notice that they are not really paying attention to the conversation if the television is in the background.

Even with phones, most retirees have all sorts of paperwork stashed and stored in
folders, files, drawers, binders, etc. Then when you are looking for one specific item,

time) once a year, and throw out, sort, organize, label, delete, etc.

I always have had an annual tabbed folder drawer which have some business related folders and many personal ones for statements, Invoices, etc, I make a mail merge of folder labels which makes it much easier to read and see than hand written. I keep 3 years worth in file drawers that I simply pull out and move to where last years was when it's time. The oldest, 4 year old now gets it's contents moved to a sealed folder box which I found can be much smaller than the ones I used to use 10 plus years ago! Most Statements and Invoices I have saved electronically. I've been getting later each year about printing and sorting which becomes similar to not fully unpacking! . 😊

These are good. Not 5 hours good for me, but good. I'd add - don't configure your phone to make noises or vibrate. Pick a time each day, maybe twice a day, to return text messages. Unless you're waiting for the food delivery guy, or a planned called from family, there's no reason to answer a phone. Don't watch the news, don't EVER allow push notifications, and send every email that isn't from friends or about a business transaction to spam. Check email once a day, at most. Being less connected is a choice that brings freedom, peace, and reduced stress. One of the advantages of being older is that you really don't have to do anything at any specific time that you don't want to. Let people schedule around your life, not the other way around. If they matter, they'll wait, if they won't, they really don't matter.

I learned awhile back to put my cell phone across the room. My hearing is not as good as it once was, so in need it in the same room, just not by the bed.

Go back to work. Volunteer for a cause. Have a purpose to help the world. Retirees have become the most centered individuals What happened to our generation who was going make the world better in the 60’s.

Nope. Worked hard, got an education, got and stayed married, paid my bills, paid taxes, raised my kids to not be bums, lived below means, attended my church...the world revolved around others. Untill very recently. If I am self centered, well I guess I earned it.
Mortality tables say 17 some odd years and I am going to enjoy them to the max on our terms for a change. I'm good.

Yes. Self centered. That’s exactly what I’m going for in my retirement. I spent 40 years being the employee, the worker, the business owner, the chief maid, the accountant, the laundress, the cook, the decorator, Santa Claus, the dog walker, the wing beneath his wings.
It’s now all about me. If I spend a day volunteering to walk dogs, it’s because it’s what I feel like doing. Not because I owe anyone anything. Not a thing,
      I owe me now.

I’m in my mid 40s and do not like watching tv. I would rather do anything other than watch tv. Unless there is a particular movie I’m interested in watching then I don’t mind sitting down for a couple of hours with some popcorn.
My DH on the other hand spent his entire weekend in front of a screen watching something, movies, RUclips, surfing cable channels. This has been going on for a few years and each day I’m waiting for him to say “I watched everything out there, there’s nothing else to watch”. and turn that darn thing off and go do something he would like to do. This will probably never happen.
Do you live with a spouse that watches tv all the time? What’s your story?

If you watch RUclips on your TV as much as you watch “TV”, does that count as “TV time”? ;-)

Don’t do all these things on my phone. iPad is actually the time suck - but I like to learn and watch You Tube videos that help with that but I don’t watch videos that are over 30 minutes long - that is a time waster to me as much of the video is rambling. Do have to pay attention to this time waster.
