You guys are a gem to the Miata community. I learned a lot through your videos! Thank you for all the instructional vids!
NB miatas also have a horizontal adjustment screw. At 3:10 there is a white/grey cover just under his fingertips, under that cover that looks suspiciously like some sort of vent, there is a hidden screw.
😯
Love these basic DIY videos. A lot of people get into cars through a Miata and these videos connect that audience with FM. I’d love to see an FM suspension kit install video.
Great video, Mike! Will do it!
Thank you for the video, exactly what I needed!
Great to hear!
Thanks. I have an NC2. It was worth the wait
I'm pretty sure my ND does a little auto-calibration every time the car starts, definitely noticeable when the lights are on when it starts up. This is with the turn-following light setup, pretty sure it's an ND2 (late 2018), so may not be the same on all versions/trims, but neat to watch it happen!
Thanks so much.👍 I just installed a pair of LED Halo headlights on my 97 & need to adjust them.
Glad to help!
Summary:
Required: level ground, tire pressures all even, flat perpendicular wall, 30 feet of room from wall
Tools: Sharpie, tape, tape measure, phillips screwdriver, large cardboard piece.
NB Miata has only one adjustment screw.
Very long shaft #2 Phillips reccomended for NA Miata. Bottom screw is up down axis. Outside of the car screw is left right axis.
Park car 30 feet away from wall to use.
Measure height of center of headlight/little square marked on headlight. Measure that far up the wall and mark it with tape.
Measure three inches lower for your target mark and mark that with tape (rule of thumb: drop one inch for every ten feet).
Block one light with the large cardboard. Start with the other headlight.
The light beam will look like a little 'step'. You want the lower step to be at the target mark line. (Note: Miata NA 'step' is not as clear to see)
Adjust vertical screw to line this up for that light. Do not force the adjusters if you have an older car.
Block the other headlight with large cardboard and repeat.
Finally remove the cardboard and make sure the beams are even.
super helpful. Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Thanks, Mike!
You're welcome!
Thanks Mike!
Any time!
ty!!
Great info! Hope the damaged mounts on my driver side housing doesn’t effect aiming. What about fog lights? I’ve just added A/M LED fogs mounted on the tow hooks (NB1 Base plain nose) and should aim all the lights.
Link to fogs?
Hey thank you so much
No problem!
do the nb 2.5 hav different adjustment..
I have an ND1 and the driver side headlight points higher than the passenger. Will the OBDII method get the headlights to even out at the correct height or just djust one of the lights?
..I’m having the same issue, did you figure out which method works? My driver side light shoots up about 7ft up and the right one 3 ft off the ground. Thanks for any info.
Recently noticed my NA headlights vibrate a lot at idle, after changing my motor mounts that where 30 years old I guess. Are there any components in the pop-up mechanism such as bushings or anything that wear over time and could cause this? Or is this just what you get if you use the stiffer Mazdaspeed motor mounts over the 100% OEM units as I did.
The pop-up headlight arms and bushings wear out, causing a jiggle.

@FlyinMiataVideo thank you! I knew you would know the answer, you guys always do with these cars!
I replaced the headlight arm… the competition bushings do cause some shake
We had all four bulbs changed at Wal-Mart and it seems like the low beams are terrible out of line about 60 degrees to the outside. Almost impossible to see since lights go off to both sides of the road and there is no light in the middle. How could have have misaligned these? How do I fix it?
Reach out to our support team directly. They can probably help trouble shoot and give you some pointers for adjustment.
On the ND instructions, one part says do not touch the wires together, a section or two later, it says touch them together 🤨 do we need wires at all , or does the paper clip method work? (They would be “touching” then, since it’s the same piece?)
It's not as simple as just jumping the terminal. You need to complete the circuit in a specifically timed sequence. Having two pieces of wire or two paper clips makes this much easier. It states not to let the wires touch because the can't be touching when you start the procedure. Within 30 seconds of turning on the ignition, you touch these wires together 3 times, thus completing the circuit, you should then see the warning light flash on the dash. If you have any questions or don't understand the procedure, feel free to give us a call. Our support team will be happy to walk you through it. Thanks!
@@FlyinMiataVideo thanks for clarifying! Was slightly thrown off by the paperclip in the video. 🙏
My driver’s side low beam is pointing down and to the left, the high beam is fine. I don’t think this is going to help, but thank you all the same.
Feel free to reach out to our customer support team if you need help troubleshooting!
There definitely is an adjustment screw in the ND headlights. I'm used to better technical videos from FM!
…you’re 100% correct I just adjusted mine with a screwdriver on my 2016 mx grand touring. Counter clockwise goes up and clockwise goes down.😄✌🏼
this only works with the stock lights on the NA right? Not with halos?
Anything that fits in the factory housing should be able to be adjusted using these methods. We can't guarantee anything for parts that don't use or replace the factory mounting points.
@@FlyinMiataVideo got it, thanks !!
Why would you use a Phillips screwdriver rather than a JIS?
Take it as a generic "cross shaped screwdriver", far more people know what a Philips is than a JIS. The amount of torque involved should not be enough for it to make a difference in this case.
@@FlyinMiataVideo I just replaced a seatbelt, and it was an odd mix of metric and Imperial. Didn't know if there was some US regulation about headlight adjustment.
@@mikesmith2864 Seatbelt anchor bolts are about the only SAE bolt on the car thanks to regulations. If there's a requirement about headlight adjuster fastener types, we're not aware of it.
We're big fans of using JIS drivers whenever possible, but sometimes you have to use the terms that are the most familiar to your audience.
ND has a screw in each headlight for vertical alignment. I don't know where this nonsense said in the video comes from.

Whoa. You state that there is no adjusting the ND headlights at the front of the car. Oh Cont-rare. There sure is an adjustment screw behind each headlight.
Oh really! You got any pics? I'd love to let Mike know about this😁
@@FlyinMiataVideo Yes, I have pics. I don't see how to include them here.
