What a joy to have Mann expound on film history and his craft. He weaves so many things into his replies-social commentary, history, psychology-it's amazing to listen to. And he does it all so effortlessly and with respect for all the filmmakers. Plus, his diverse selection is a testament to putting artistic merit above all. Not being narrowminded but really respecting a wide variety of genres, traditions, and directors. I cannot wait for Heat 2. Thank you Letterboxd, for the time and effort put into this interview.

If the Heat screening @ the Egyptian that he mentioned was back in January 2024, then I was there! Loved seeing it on the big screen. I was also able to get him to sign my 4k Blu-ray steelbook of Heat!!!
Purchase Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier. Features both the '79 theatrical release and the 2001 Redux. Plus extras galore, tons of info on every aspect of the film down to the audio remixing. I, personally, always prefer to watch Redux because I really enjoy the experience of sitting down and getting into the headspace of a long, cerebral film, and Redux delivers. I've seen the theatrical cut on DVD a couple times and of course it is still a masterpiece, still revelatory, "like a diamond bullet." Mostly, I believe that the excised French estate sequence and the Playboy Bunny encounter (fuel swap scene) are so tantamount to what the film has to say overall to the point that their excision is borderline criminal. Redux isn't just extra fat, I feel it all flows together. As for Final Cut, don't think I've seen that. My brother was streaming the film not too long ago and I watched it on and off, not sure exactly what cut it was, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. But I saw Godfather Coda and there was like two or three little differences to where I was thinking, ok? Get the soundtrack on vinyl too!
I love Michael Mann. One of my all time favorite directors but he's absolutely wrong about the "previous administration" or possibly "the next administration." Open your eyes Michael on who the truly Fascists are. It's the current administration.
You should update your graphic design on that icon you display of film name and director. You should always display the YEAR of a film in parens after the name.

Extremely talented director, I unfortunately didn't like Ferrari and wish he had a hit, he needs it... has been on a slump for a while... I have similar feelings for DePalma. The young lady interviewing did a great job here, she was very well prepared.

If you read user reviews of the novella online, it’s always only in about 3 stars out of 5 haha. Everyone calling it boring and confusing. It’s one of the greatest things ever written. Better than any film up to now. I’m just saying what is the truth. If that 100 million dollar plus spectacle is considered on par with Conrad’s 100 page novella than cinema is almost certainly a failure as it’s cant just about spectacle. The book, which is mere words, is way more powerful. Not a good look for film. Much prefer Nic Roeg’s take from 1993, made for television. Communicates the novella better. Apocalypse Now just spectacle. More American ego. Made some big fat nerd looking to prove a point and show how manly he is. It’s about career. Reminds me of Schindlers list, which is only about career and success. Only real part is Dennis Hopper’s role. Also, Carol Reed’s Outcast of the Islands (1951) better than Apocalypse Now. I mean, Apocalypse Now is Charlie Sheen’s favourite film. Says it all.

The movie is it's own piece of art and there is no reason to even compare. They even joke about fat Brando turning up not having read it. If you look at user reviews for Heart of Darkness online, it’s middling. Many dismiss it as boring and confusing. They all mention Apocalypse Now though. I wish the film would just fuck off honestly. The fact that Apocalypse Now, which is just another American spectacle presented in a self serious, romantically artistic way could replace something like Heart of Darkness culturally is a tragedy and just another sign of these awful times. I love films more than literature but we live in times in which RUclipsrs who stream, shamelessly screaming into mics and acting like literal idiots call themselves artists unironically and their million strong audience accept. In the world now, funerals are becoming less popular. Over 60 percent of people prefer to have what they call have a life party. Great but that’s just an excuse to have a party instead of paying respects and having a moment of reflection for a person who has died. Then that would mean they would have to put their iPhone down for a few seconds. I have read that many funeral directors constantly witness people taking selfies during burial. Only about 20 percent but still. If you read Heart of Darkness, there is no doubt you will take something away from it. If you watch Apocalypse Now, not everyone will see that other side too it, which isn’t deep anyway but all they will take away is the spectacle of violence, which is shot with such glee. It’s a film built to be sat with like that. The poetry they all won’t shut up about isnt at the forefront. That’s just pure pretentiousness. They know what they doing. Apocalypse Now is a compete failure next to the novella. If that film is considered one of the heights of cinema then film itself is a failure.
