Testing the Clippy EM272 Mono + Roland R-07 (Also: Shure SM58 & iPhone)

- In this video I sample the Clippy EM272 omnidirectional mic with water sounds, voice, and sounds around the home and neighborhood. I briefly compare the Clippy with the built-in mic on my iPhone 11 (used to shoot this) and also the mics on the Roland R-07 and the Shure SM58 (why not). I was told the cable I used with the two SM58s was custom made by Gotham Sound; I bought it on eBay.
Naturally, the better your headphones, the more differences you'll notice. Time stamps below.
After a month of playing with The Clippy EM272, my conclusion is that I like it, but I need to come up with a better method of wind protection.
I didn't do any audio processing in the video except for one clip were I did drop the low end using EQ to cut wind noise. That clip is noted and compared with an unprocessed version of the same clip. Otherwise, everything is as it came out of the R-07; did not even boost gain.

Hey I happens to see this good video from you and I’m interested about the SM58 test, you just connect the two SM58 with a 3.5mm to XLR cable, anything in between? Thanks and have a good day!
Right, that's it! And I had a split cable that brought the two XLR cables down to a single 3.5mm. That way one mic went to the left channel, and the other to the right. Worked pretty well, I thought.
@@jeff_boyd Thank you for your reply! That's incredible! Didnt expect Roland can do this!
@@tonykwok2451 Honestly, I was surprised too!
The clippy em272 are so good. Just ordered a stereo matched pair for my binaural recording setup
Nice! You'll have a lot of fun with them, for sure. And I checked out your channel -- looking and sounding great!
@@jeff_boyd thanks Jeff. I've just started this new channel to separate the content from my main car channel
I'm a big Clippy/Pluggy fan. I prefer the audio on the footage using that mic. Regarding wind protection: the Bubblebee removes an amazing amount of high frequency. My feeling is, that's mabye OK for voice over -- with a bit of boost in post -- which seems to be your main point of evaluation. When it comes to 'pure' environmental sound and bubbling brooks in particular? I'm dithering myself with how much wind I should keep versus wind I discard. If it comes at the expense of a lively recording of water or leaves or wind in the trees or other 'noisy' elements in the landscape, maybe it's too much. There's always wind or breeze outside and we become accustomed to it; it's subliminal but it contributes. I hope in the mean time you've acquired another Clippy and done some AB nature work. Inside there's no wind so the only challenge is figuring out how close and how much gain to get what you want/need. I like a bit of "room" in the recordings I make of my household stuff -- metal or ceramic bowls are the best!
Thanks for your comment, and for highlighting the Bubblebee trade-off. Very well said!
Clippy sounds super nice!
Especially at that price point!
I have a stereo matching pair of Clippy's and the Roland 7 as well. Its a brilliant combo. I can afford to buy the expensive gear but the cost to extra quality difference isn't worth it in my opinion. Also I like the challenge of getting the best from the gear I buy rather than just buying the best with no challenge.
I agree, a solid combo! I still haven't purchased a matching pair, but I plan to. And I really like that approach of making the most of what you have. I used to work for a small nonprofit that had the mantra -- "Do much with little." That has stayed with me. Thanks for your comment here!
Clippy EM272 cool sound! )))
Thanks for checking out this video! Yes, I think the Clippy is a fun mic. Enjoy creating!
What were the levels you were getting on the key sounds and scissors etc? How much noise once you get a compressor on there?
I don't remember now what the levels were at with those sounds, I'm afraid. And I didn't experiment with any processing like compression or EQ. Not a very helpful response, I know.
Hey do you know if the clippy mic/capsule is detachable?
Do you mean the mic is detachable from the cable, or do you mean from the microphone housing? It seems pretty solidly attached, but maybe someone else here could answer better than me.
@@jeff_boyd Yeah never mind I don't think it's detachable, thanks
Hi! Does the clippy em 272 needs a phantom power? Tnx.
Sorry I missed your comment. It needs plug-in power, which is much lower than phantom power.
For Rob: "Life on Wheels" as a title?
Nature recordings in mono is like watching with just one eye!
In mono recordings there are so many informations missed - it just makes no sense to do this.
We are listening with two ears and if you use only one mic you are loosing more than just 50%.
Yeah, that makes sense for sure.
I originally bought this mic because sometimes I want a little ambient sound with video projects, and I wondered if this cheap mic had the capacity to sound better than using my R-06 or R-26 external mics or if I'd need to go with a more expensive setup to get a quality I was satisfied with. So I wanted to see how this would sound in a variety of applications (thus all the sections to the video, and I should have done more, like at a coffee shop or restaurant).
And I wasn't sure what I'd think about the capsule, so I wanted to listen to it before investing in a matched set of this or Lom or better mics.
But 100%, if I do more nature recording, I'll purchase a matched set of some mic for stereo recording. Totally agree.
