When Kayla didn’t want to kiss a male model because she had been abused and was afraid of men and they basically told her just to deal with it was sickening.
I wish there were actually consequences for people’s actions but no, they just cashed in their huge checks and moved on and in the grand scheme of things nobody cares.

I used to love watching ANTM as a kid but now that I’m older and watching this video I’m realizing how toxic that show was. Naomi Campbell knew what was up. Now I understand why she didn’t like Tyra.

remember cycle 12 (?) when a girl with epilepsy had to walk down a runway with bright flashing lights, being scared she was going to have a seizure, she ended up going home that episode too.
But runways have flashing lights so I think someone with epilepsy will not survive in the modeling world anyway.

@@namisazulu1372 everyone's disability is different, for some people their epilepsy is only triggered by strobe lights (which is what there was). for others it can be triggered by a camera flash or a tv screen... its kinda ableist to comment abt how someone with epilepsy "will not survive" modeling just bc of ur preconceived notion.

As someone with epilepsy, this really pissed me off. Seizures are exhausting and to put someone in that situation is just disgusting
I remember there was one episode where a black girl had to do a perfume or something photoshoot with a French or Spanish guy and the guy basically said he didn’t like black girls and he can’t act like he liked her etc. She told Tyra and jay and they basically dismissed her and told her to get over it. Her picture turned out bad and I think she got sent home smh

They beat Jaeda down so much. They cut all of her hair and gave her a Halle Berry look (which, by the way, she absolutely rocked it and looked amazing), but she hated her short hair and every episode, you could tell how insecure she was. They kept that girl around way too long, just to humiliate and demean her and exploit how insecure she was

There are lawsuits against ANTM because they were keeping the models anxiety meds away from them. And in the modeling industry, the agencies do NOT respect models who have been on the show. It usually hurts their careers.

2. I remember one girl won and the next year I saw her modeling on forever21s website. Now forever21 was way more popular back then but it was still odd to see a “top model” just posing on their website like any other girl. It wasn’t even a campaign or sponsorship.
OMG yes! A handful of girls who won didn’t even get the modeling contract they were promised. They aren’t taken seriously because it was a TV show & people knew all the things Tyra & others were saying were trash. Drastically changing those girls hair was unnecessary because models usually wore wigs & extensions.

I believe her name is Renee, the one that was arrested. She mentioned that nobody took her seriously after the show. She also mentioned that NO ONE from the show keeps in contact with the models. Once they're off the show, their careers are done.
I remember when Tyra found out one of the contestants wanted to use their modeling career to fund her own business then sent her home that same week. Yet Tyra used her modeling career to fund MULTIPLE tv shows and personal projects
Right! Like in cycle 22, the top 5 contestants literally had to do a business pitch and show that they could become an entrepreneur

The judges were also pissed bc there was a girl who wanted to go to med school and be a doctor so she wasn’t “dedicated” to modeling but they were torn bc she was really really good..... p sure they sent her home. they try to spread the message that models are more than their bodies.... yet they send a model home who’s also very dedicated to her studies? Yawn

my least favorite thing even when i was younger is when there would be black girls especially with darker skin that had natural long hair and they were forced to get their hair cut. it always made me sad because of the stigma that black girls were “bald headed” so the fact that tyra would make them cut their hair that they grew for YEARS always had me heated

Judges be making fun the contestants, and when a contestant starts defending themselves they be like "you gotta learn how to take criticize"
I remember at the time you could be scouted on the street or send your picture (paper post) to a modelling agency or visit sciuting days of big modelling agencies. ANTM was NOT 'the only way for someone poor or or whatever to become a model. The real modelling world actually often looked down on the ANTM reality tv models and ex ANTM contestants testified to that.

Let's not forget how Tyle flexes the fact that she worked hard being a black woman in the modeling industry when she has a thin nose and upper lip, wears her hair straight wih highlights 99% of the time and has hazel eyes, often photoshopped to look green, or straight up enhanced with colored lenses. Not to mention she was ALWAYS photoshopped for her skin to look lighter than it really is.
She isn't a big example of how black girls can succeed in a modeling career as much as she says. She is a good example of how the modeling industry is so racist that one of the biggest black influences shares most of her features with caucasian models, but with a dark skin ("And lets make sure it is shiny and very light when we edit, shall we?" -The agencies that worked with her).
Btw, I know she actually worked hard asf to succeed in her life and to be as big as she is, and I totally respect that, but come on. Look at a single picture of that woman and te me she is the right person to represent ALL african american women out there. And this is totally NOT her fault. It's the same thing with Naomi Scott as Jasmine in Disney's live action Alladin: She wasn't the perfect choice for Jasmine, she was simply the whitest non-white actress they could find.

That whole thing with Shandi was even shadier than most people realize. The contestants aren’t allowed to have cell phones and producers are strict as hell about when and for how long they can be on the house phone.
Shandi would have needed special permission for that unscheduled call. And from everything I’ve read they normally would never have agreed, but they let her because it was high drama. They didn’t even restrict how long she was on there either. They broke all their own rules so they could film that devastating moment.
Fr! But also when (I forgot her name) was about to leave the show and instead of her crying she smiled and tried making everyone feel better which was so sweet of her but then Tyra got mad called her disrespectful and yelled at her for like 3 minutes like girl wwwwwhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaatttttt

The first girl you mentioned was Isis. She was their first transgender contestant. One of the few successful models to come out of this show but they exploited her too. Having the other models ask her uncomfortable questions about her genitals and lie to her about having help eith her hormone injections andnnot having that displayed on TV.

I think that they aren't actually bleaching the hair light enough to go icy blonde in a lot of cases. Going from super dark hair to icy blonde is hard to do in a single day. That said, if they can't do it, they shouldn't promise it. They should go for a different shade, even if it isn't blonde.

I felt so bad for Jaeda. While I think she was stunning with short hair, if she's not happy with it, then that's all that matters.
And she also had to kiss a guy for the Covergirl shoot who said he didn't want to kiss her because she was black. Her commercial wasn't the best, but it was because the guy was racist and unprofessional. Finally, after everything was said and done, you know how the judges responded to this, taking into account that this man broke her down to the point she couldn't do her job? They eliminated her that same episode. 😑

And let’s not forget Allison she was robbed twice, and I think it’s because she wasn’t messy like the other contestants. She literally got runner up TWICE to the most problematic person. I don’t know dude, but that pissed me off.

To be fair, Elise had no business being there- it’s a modeling competition that can help you further your career. She entered knowing that she wanted to be a doctor and not a model. It’s been awhile since I watched the season but I’m pretty sure she even admitted on camera that she was just trying to win the show for laughs. It wasn’t serious to her- it didn’t mean anything to her. Because she entered and was accepted she took the opportunity from another girl who actually would have wanted to be there to become a model. I think her entering the competition in the first place was their issue with her wanting to be a doctor and not a Model.
@@IllHandleThis disagree. It's a reality show, it's not that big a deal. Modeling is a way to make money, not your entire life. It's a good idea to have an education to fall back on.

I also hated how they always said that the more introverted, reserved girls had no personality. Like??? Are you for real? Most people in the industry wanna work with people they ''vibe'' with. They don't want a clown, who's loud and ready to do every embarrassing thing people tell them to do. The fact that the show said multiple times that quiet people have no personality bothered me so much. How does that make sense? Especially when Tyra is up there on her pedestal preaching about positivity and empowering and inclusivity when she can't even accept the fact that some people are introverted and therefore will not scream and fake a giggle just to look like they are a ''fun'' person. I loved that Jeana Turner finally pointed that out in cycle 24.
Another thing I had in mind was that Tyra herself would never do all these crazy challenges and then she would be appalled that models couldn't idk for example resist gravity when she made them walk down a building? Girl, you couldn't do it either who are you kidding?
I agree, Gigi Hadid isn't super loud and out there, they're their to walk and pose how the client wants, not to show themselves and personality, it's to sell a product and make it look appealing. Kendall Jenner isn't loud, legit almost no popular models are
yes! I remember that as a kid, and it messed up how I viewed myself, and it made feel like I had to pretend to be louder and what I wasn't. That show was so bad.

I dislike Winnie Harlow for other reasons but 1) When the photographer kept calling her a panda and nobody said anything and then got mad when she asked not to be called that. 2) She said the show did nothing for her career- She was not wrong. Most of these girls who go on here don’t get jobs and contracts because of this show. It’s reality TV and half the things they were saying was not true in the modeling world. The hair cutting and hair dying drastically just doesn’t happen. If they want a blonde girl, they will get blonde girls not brown haired girls and tell them to dye their hair. And even if they did, the model can refuse. In the early seasons the winners did not get the modeling contract they were promised. I saw some earlier seasons and the lack of care for someone’s mental health is CRAZY and UNACCEPTABLE. They manipulate them to make them feel bad about they’re ailments. I remember in one season, this girl was African and in the challenge was to choose a hat and style it. She didn’t choose the “Arican hat” which wasn’t even authentic and one of the judges criticized her for not choosing it. And another judge said why do you always have to prove your “African-ness”. This was so disrespectful and for speaking up against this blatant racism. They made her apologize to the person that picked the inaccurate African hat.
Ah, I believe that was Yaaya who is killing it now. Buuuut to be fair, she did totally snap and go off about how the African hat was so cheaply made and tacky so I DO understand them having to reprimand her a bit for that. one girl had Severe food poisoning. shaking, crying, could barely walk. had to go the emergency room and faked being better to get released from the hospital & show up to judging. she was still very obviously sick. if she hadn't shown up, the judges agreed that they would eliminate her.

In the first cycle the one that got groped in Paris and didn’t complain to anyone is who won. If they complain they try to use it as a way to kick them off. Ok can I just say I’ve been modeling my entire life, I’ve traveled the world, worked for international companies, and I’ve done just about every fashion week and this show is not how it is at all.
The only hair change I’ve ever had was Pureology made me go from blonde to gold. My agency also slowly highlighted it back. They do a lot with your makeup and they do tease the shit out of your hair and there is some damage but I’ve never ever had my hair cut or shaved. I’ve also never met someone who has had their hair cut or shaved. You are also given all job details before you take it so it a dye job is in there you can turn it down.

okay but remember that time in cycle 10 when they did a shoot pretending to be homeless people and one of the girls (i think it was marvita) got really emotional about it because she had been homeless at one point in her life, and then tyra says, "i know what you mean because i was homeless for a day for my talk show" like ??????? she really did that huh

Actually as someone who did some modeling and know celebrity makeup artists and who also interned at a modeling agency, I can tell you ANTM NEVER helped ANYONE on a path to becoming a model and definitely a supermodel. Winnie Harlow was correct when she said ANTM had NOTHING to do with her becoming a supermodel. The most ANTM will do is help you become a TV personality. Actually knowing you were on ANTM could hurt you. And Tyra Banks is not liked that much in the modeling industry. First and foremost Tyra is a business woman and ANTM is one of her most successful businesses. Her brand is fake niceness.

Another reason why this show is literally deteriorating the contestants mental being is that not only are they only being judged on their looks but they’re also getting told their not good enough about the one thing they’re passionate about. In shows like survivor and big brother, the fact that their on a game show isn’t the most important thing about them. For these models it is. Imagine going through weeks of being judged, flying across the country, your family rooting for you and then getting told the job you’ve wanted and worked so hard for ‘isn’t cut out for you’ or that you probably won’t make it in the industry. Note to mention it’s by one of the most influential models, and probably someone they looked up to.

This is why I liked The Face UK more, cause they gave them proper modeling advice during the whole show.
Also try Britain's Next Top Model (in some seasons was Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model). Still some drama moments of course, but I felt the makeovers were slightly more realistic, and if a girl was upset, they wouldn't just tell them to get 'over it'. I remember Elle Mcpherson sitting with girls, and explaining why they were doing a certain hairstyle, because they truly believed it would bring out her facial features, etc. And I found the photo shoots more realistic - I remember one for I think Lipton Tea, or something similar - there's a representative of the company there, letting them know what they want for the shoot, and they're getting helped with poses and things.
Just having the shoots be for actual companies gave it a much more realistic approach.
Jael was literally detoxing on camera and they made her suffer. If I remember correctly, her friend even died of a drug overdose that season. RIP, she was a real one and she eventually lost her battle with cancer. They really tried to tear her down. She was a really sweet and positive person.
I also wrote a comment for Jael. They didn't intervene in her drug abuse during the show, they forced her to do a grave shot after her friend died of OD and then after she was five years sober and died of breast cancer in 2018 Tyra gave her the most generic one-liner condolence on Twitter. I miss Jael, I followed her on Insta and she was always so positive and in general a special human.

I think the saddest part of all of this was that none of these girls even the ones who won, never became top models. They went through all of this and gave up so much for almost nothing. Unfortunately I agree that it is entertaining.
they also did ethnicity swap in cycle 13. but the twist was that they were hapa, cuz they were in hawaii. it was soooo much black face. i used to watch antm religiously when i was 12/13. but watching it back now its so awful and gave me such bad messages lol.

You know the modeling industry is fucked up when a normal, healthy size woman is classed as "borderline plus sized."
This reminds me of when they took up issue with Keenyah's eating habits in Cycle 3, and that was a huge storyline for the second half of that season. They exploited that by making her represent "gluttony" in one shoot, and then an elephant in other shoot. It's actually so annoying to think of all the ways they manipulated situations and contestants in the name of "entertainment."

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT PEOPLE WATCH CYCLE 3, Kelly was treated extremely poorly, they broke her down and never helped her out.

I remember this one cycle I can’t remember the number for it, but their was this girl (I forgot her name) who was transgender, and the girls in the house was making fun of her and belittling her. I just remember watching it and feeling so bad for her and how disgusting these girls were.

Another moment that NO ONE talks about: late in cycle 4, the panel started to personally bully Christina, who in spite of being a nice girl, a non troublemaker and took BEAUTIFUL pictures, over her apparent lack of personality and having no top lip. Even worse, they even gave her a piece of tissue to put in her gums to look like she had a fuller lip. It's one of the most disgusting moments I've witnessed on the show even back then and on subsequent reairings of the episode, I'd either flip to another channel or look away.
