  • Former TV game show host Bob Barker and a representative of PAWS (Performing Animals Wildlife Sanctuary) were invited by the City department that manages the Edmonton Valley Zoo to meet Lucy the 32 year old Asian elephant. Barker also spoke with the people at the zoo who have first-hand knowledge about Lucy and her life there. Barker has been lobbying the zoo to sent Lucy to a sanctuary in California so she can socialize with other elephants. Video by Ed Kaiser / Edmonton Journal

    This was 13 years ago!! Let’s not forget about her! She is 47 years old now and still living in captivity without a pool and harsh winter weather.

    Poor Lucy. She has paid her dues to the Edmonton Zoo... it's time to let her "retire" with her dignity.... If her health is too poor to move her, then she needs to have an examination by an unbiased veterinarian to confirm that! Please Edmonton Zoo, do the right thing for Lucy!!!!

    Toronto Zoo and the city of Toronto has now agreed to send the elephants to PAWS and Bob Barker is paying for their move. I wish Lucy could join them at PAWS. As a Canadian I'm appalled by our zoos thinking that elephants in Canada is alright. Elephants need to be in groups not kept singularly no matter how well they are taken care of. As well as they need a warm environment year round. I applaud Bob for his work in helping PAWS.

    Send Lucy to California where she can have some elephant friends to interact and socialize with!

    She could be the female Asian elephant that Shepperton Studios and Disney temporarily used for the scene of Benjamina Gunn's arrival in "Muppet Treasure Island".

      I don’t know. Seems unlikely. I highly doubt they brought an elephant all the way from Canada.
      Probably not the same Lucy.

    I live in Edmonton and Lucy is getting really old and the stress of the move would kill her.

      Forty years old is not old, barely middle-age, for an Asian elephant. If she seems old, it is due to her circumstances and environment -- cold weather, minimal exercise, hard surfaces, etc. She NEEDS to move to PAWS or to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

    Edmonton should release Lucy to move to Paws she should socialize and be happy! this is not the right place for Elephant to be alone in Norther Canada because of the weather and because Elephants need to socialize with other Elephants! this zoo abuse of Lucy to maintain her alone in Canada this is insane!

    How can people really know if Lucy is happy or sad? Only Lucy knows for sure.

    • @irukakudjira8154

      Would you be happy alone far away from any other humans and no hope to see anyone and in addition to that in such bad climate not suitable for Elephant as the one in Northern Canada!

    Well since it was the United States who took Lucy's family away I think we should rescue Lucy's family who were no more than valued for breeding purposes in 2007 by the United States. Get Lucy's family back :)

    Bob Barker wants the Toronto Zoo to give their elephants to the US. With the US economy the way it is, can they really afford this? Besides helping elephants, has Bob Barker considered helping his fellow Americans? Many do not have jobs or a decent place to live, or medical care.

    • @irukakudjira8154
      @irukakudjira8154 4 года назад

      The essential is to take the best care of Elephants cruelly captured from their homelands! Bob Barker took care of that. For Jobs the US people vote for this kind of President with a blonde wig that speaks loudly and sends tweets all the times!

    You do know that Elephants aren't native to northern California as well? I guess with this logic we had better remove all Polar bears and Penguins back to the colder climates where they belong. I hope I'm not this dumb when I get this old.

    • @womanofsubstance8735
      @womanofsubstance8735 5 лет назад +1

      True, elephants are not native to northern California, but the weather there more closely approximates their natural climate and does not require extended periods locked in a sunless, concrete-floored barn. And yes, polar bears and penguins would be best returned to their natural polar climates. Sadly, global climate change is rapidly destroying even those.
      Also, it would be nice if you weren't as ignorant and heartless as you seem at your current age. Sad. . . . Or are you really just a troll? Also sad.

    Well, at least he understands that she should not be moved now, but I think that it is absolutely ridiculous that she should be moved from where she is happy and well cared for. She has a large enclosure and receives top treatment and care.

      She really should retire to a sanctuary. Female elephants are programmed to stay together not be dragged apart in a hunt in the forest and seeing the family n mother who often are killed. It's just as traumatic in captivity being forced apart. WE can't possibly understand the deep effect on a female elephant. But we do know they can die of grief and sadness. It's very important a plan for all captive elephants be made for their retirement. All elephants. In fact, I'm going to contact WAZA.

      @@moifemmecoleur1328 alright well go ahead and do that, like a lot of people probably already have. In fact my original comment is so old that at this point I even agree with you for the most part. But the problem is, she's so old at this point that even transporting her might be bad for her health.
