      I just wish folks from backgrounds like yours and a white fella who lives in a rural county in the Midwest. Would be able to cone together and love this show and understand that we shouldn’t let a flag ruin everything this show stood for.
      I love the car. I wish everyone could love this show and for the most part ignore the flag on the top of the car but remember that the flag did represent awful period in American history. But to put it in perspective and see this is just a tv show

      They darn near ruined the show by letting John and Tom walk, even if temporarily. The most interesting part of the whole scenario is that after about 10 or 11 episodes with Coy and Vance, Bo and Luke returned, and Coy and Vance were never mentioned again. What the actors were asking for wasn't unreasonable and should have been provided in the first place. Idiot producers. I think the series would have gone another 2 or 3 seasons without this stupid interruption. That isn't a knock on the Coy/Vance actors, but they just didn't work.

    Coy and Vance may have been unpopular and accused of causing the series to jump the shark. But at least they plugged the gap while the Bo and Luke actors were on strike and kept the series from cancellation during that time.

    • @bullock4211
      @bullock4211 5 лет назад +5

      That wouldnt have gone over well with the real actors of Bo and Luke. It would be no different than a bunch of scabs who'd cross the picket line during a strike

    • @dantheman8103

      @@bullock4211 You might be right, I can't speak for them. But they did encourage Catherine Bach to stay fearing if she left the show would not make it for them to come back. Which implies they did seem to think it was better if the show continued, and presumably Coy and Vance knew their time was likely short lived. Not saying there wasn't animosity but might not be exactly like a scab worker situation in a normal strike, where the company was supposed to not run without the people striking.

      Listen, Coy and Vance may have been unpopular, but at least neither a violent psychopath like Luke Duke. Luke was a very sick, dangerous individual from a young age, starting when he cracked a Louisville Slugger over Bo’s head.(Discussed in s05e26).
      Then Luke went to the Marines where he saw things he never quite recovered from. After an OTH discharge, he drifted around, becoming involved in a fight where he beat a guy to death: Luke stomped the poor bastard in the throat, then stood there and watched him die. Luke mentions this in the season 3 episode “In this Corner, Luke Duke”. Eventually, the law catches up with Luke, and he ends up doing time in prison (s07e07 “Cool Hands Bo and Luke”). In prison you don’t have nice little fights. In prison you have to kill the other guy. And in the special episode “Carnival of Thrills”, Luke once again gets in a fight with his cousin. He is about to seriously injure Bo, to the point that it takes Uncle Jesse *armed with a shotgun* to stop Luke from administering another deadly stomping..
      Finally, Coy and Vance may have been dorks, but they knew how to respect women. Unlike Luke who sexually assaults Sara at the Boar’s Nest in the season 7 episode “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Duke”. When Bo attempts to intervene, Luke sucker punches him yet again, knocking him over some tables. Uncle Jesse immediately sends someone to get ice for Bo’s injuries. Later, in the same epsiode, Like pulls a gun on Bo. He has a crazed look in his eyes - the type of look that there is no reasoning with. Bo was extraordinarily fortunate in that he was able to knock Luke out before he killed someone.
      So overall, not a huge fan of Coy and Vance. But certainly they are better role models than a murdering, insane, bank robbing felon.

    In a parallel universe, somewhere in the infinite cosmos, the original Duke boys were Coy and Vance, and Bo and Luke were the clones - and everyone hated it just as much.

  • @eternalhalloween1

    Well, to be fair, Bo and Luke walked off the set because they weren't getting the merchandise royalties they were suppose to.
    Coy and Vance didn't cause that. If anything, they kept the show alive while Bo and Luke were on strike. To be sure, the ratings dropped with Coy and Vance. But without them, there would not have been a show for Bo and Luke to come back to.

    • @eternalhalloween1
      @eternalhalloween1 9 лет назад +14

      Hey Retrofanty. I actually liked a lot of the Coy and Vance episodes. Certainly the 2 "Big Mean Green Machine" episodes. The episode where Coy blamed himself for a man's 'supposed death' was good. Also the one where the Dukes had to campaign for Rosco. And especially the one where Uncle Jesse tried to stop a robbery and temporarily lost his sight.

    • @eternalhalloween1
      @eternalhalloween1 9 лет назад +7

      ***** Oh yea! I did like "Ding Dong, the Boss Is Dead."
      And you know what's SO ironic? The main reason Bo and Luke went on strike was because of royalties on the merchandise. But the other reason was they wanted better scripts. And ironically, this 2nd demand was met while they were on strike. Rosco and Boss even got more intelligent again. It's as if Coy and Vance's more subdued nature inspired better writing.
      1 is my favorite Season. 6 is my 2nd favorite. And 5 is my 3rd favorite.

    • @eternalhalloween1
      @eternalhalloween1 9 лет назад +6

      ***** Forgot something. The situation could have been handled better. In S2, when James Best was on strike, Boss Hogg said words to the effect that Rosco was away at Police Academy and he'll be back when he's trained. Do you have any idea of how long that will take? Funny way to cover Mr. Best being on strike. But it also tell us he will be back eventually.
      They may have done better if they said Bo and Luke were away taking care of something, and Coy and Vance were helping until Bo and Luke got back.

      Well kind of, the show hit it peak in Season's 2-5 (1979-1982) where it was consistently in the top 10 most watched shows. It did decline in ratings after that. Whether that had anything to do with the Coy and Vance debacle or just normal audience drift from a show that been running for five years, is open for debate. But even after that, the ratings were considered solid enough for it to be considered a popular primetime show. In fact, it was cancelled after initially being renewed for an 8th season, which is why there was never any "farewell" episode with Season 7, the writers and cast had all been told there would be at least one more season. The decision too cancel came down more to how expensive the show had gotten than to ratings, between actor salaries and stunt costs, it was the most expensive primetime show at the time, only exceeded when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered with it's huge special effects budget.

    Say what you want about Coy and Vance (yes, we all know they were store brand look-a-likes and their "acting" was downright atrocious), but there were still some great episodes during their run. Like someone else here said, it's like the writers knew that they needed to step up their efforts to hopefully keep the fans interested. The plots were decent and also seemed to focus more on some of the other characters and gave them a chance to shine. Byron and Chip knew they couldn't replace Jon and Tom and you have to figure they knew good and well going in that the fans would never accept them, but if they hadn't stepped in, the show would have been over right there on the spot and there would have been no show for Jon and Tom to come back to. So if nothing else we owe them thanks for keeping the show alive at the very least. Just my thoughts on it.

      No real point. Their characters were exactly the same as Bo and Luke from what I remember. Granted, it has been a while since I saw them but I read that for most they literally just changed the names Bo and Luke to Coy and Vance in the scripts written before Bo and Luke left, and nothing else. And it showed. I get they didn't have much time but shame the show never tried to make the best of it, give them different personalities and try to tell some stories they could have with Bo and Luke. Should have given them a better send off too, sure there was some animosity between the actors given the circumstances, but the four duke boys working together to stop one especially grand sceme of Boss Hog would have been a better send off then getting them out as fast as possible, likely so they could just change Coy and Vances name in the script to Bo and Luke with minimal re-writes.

      Based just on the number of cousins we met in the show, it would have had to have been at least six brothers, with Jessie being the 7th. But, if you buy the theory that Jesse could have been Luke & Bo's Great Uncle, then that opens up much wider possibilities.

    The day the ratings dropped so bad!!! As I heard. I tried to give Coy and Vance a chance, but they just looked like clones to Bo and Luke. Well, I should say, it's not their fault the ratings dropped by the way. They just filled in to keep the show going and also it wasn't there fault too that John and Tom walked out. I am glad Bo and Luke came back though. They had an idea about keeping Coy and Vance along with Bo and luke, but much of a smaller role though, until they thought FOUR Dukes couldn't work at all. The episode, Welcome Back Bo and Luke, it was also the one Coy and Vance departed and they were never seen again. Big disappointment from fans and including myself. Besides, the producers and/or creators should have went with a different direction with Coy and Vance.
