    You are so correct about the no carpet. My parents even ripped up what little carpet they still had in their house. People just don't want to deal with maintaining it anymore. It gets stained, smells, pets have accidents on it. Me, I love my carpet. I have a Kirby Ultimate G Diamond Edition, and I use it everyday. Never will buy another vacuum.

    Thank you for the tutorial, it really helped me fix mine. Our impeller got jammed and my lovely wife kept "vaccuming". That actually caused the impeller to melt to the shaft! I only bled a little.

    I'm a bit late to watch this video due to I bought my Kirby Avalir for 1,999.00 20 years ago and have used it every day since. Overkill on construction of this "machine" is an understatement. Never once have I had a single problem with it and have used just about every feature it has and it WILL suck up pretty much ANYTHING in its way...LOL Just today it grabbed a strand of yarn and pulled 5 socks and a jacket in which broke 3 pieces off the impella, bent the bottom floor bar, and broke the air flow light.
    Turned it off and ran just to make sure I didn't get sucked up too...:)
    Truly an untouchable machine as I can't call it a vacuum as it has more uses and more powerful than the 4 cylinder engine in my truck...:)
    Thank you for a very understandable video of the guts in the front end of it.
    Fix it, plug it in, and see you in another 20 years.

    Yours was the 1st video that I watched. I'm a mechanical technician for 39 years so I'm retired. My son sucked up a couple of coins and snap the blower wheel 45 minutes later got it all apart and Going to buy replacement part thanks for the video.

    Would have been great if you could have showed each step better. You should forward several times without showing the steps. I'm pretty handy and can figure it out. But it's nice to see every step to get more comfortable with the job.
    Thank you for posting this though.

    Even though I usually go about it differently, you definitely did a textbook perfect job, down to replacing the zip tie! And I’m a perfectionist who gets paid to do this kind of work! Just like I do, you put it back together EXACTLY as it was when you opened it up, the color of the sealant on the fan housing is the only clue that someone was in there, and that’s exactly how it should be!

      I can see you learned this the best way, by doing. Stones are not for commutators. Use scotch brite and maybe some contact cleaner but not necessary. Hold in on the commutator and spin the motor. I am wondering about the screw sizes on these machines. My G4, age unknown, has M4 x 0.8 pitch screws. The standard for M4 pitch is 0.7 so finding the right screw size if you drop one will be very difficult. I am a 50 year toolmaker and I don't even have a tap that size. They may be available from UK or Europe. I can't find them anywhere. M4 is almost the same as 8-32 so maybe that is the actual size.

    I have a Dyson, an original (I think it's the dc07) It picks up great, and is very easy to work on... we have had it since 97 and it barely wore out the belt. So easy to work on, and parts are plentiful.

    Thank you BBISHOPPCM; I've replaced my impeller. My damaged one refused to slide off the steel post so I useed WD40, wiggled & prised it off. It seem you have a knack of remembering where the screws came from? I have to photograph each one, and other parts, before I remove them and put all screws and parts in line by order of removal. My sealent takes 24 hours to set so when that's done I'll test and find out if the very damaged impeller was the cause of the screeching and greatly reduced suction. I won't be using it again on a building site!

    So true on the no carpet, aside from the stairs and one room in the basement with carpet tile, almost nothing in our house is carpeted any more, it’s tile, hard wood and laminate (and carpet and tile was my dads business, industrial and offices mostly he used to put in whatever carpet used in his jobs because that stuff will last in a house nowhere near the high traffic it was designed for.....)

    I might try a go at this, but my 10 year old Kirby may still have a warranty. If I tried myself would it void the warranty? I’ll have to dig out my paperwork. Thanks for the information. I definitely have a similar problem with a broken plastic fan.

    I’ve got at least one video showing what I call the easy way into these. I don’t pull the front cover off, I always just take the motor out of the back.

    I wonder if making that impeller from metal would had been advantageous?

    • @compactc9
      @compactc9 5 лет назад +1

      Andrew Littleboy they used to, but when the metal fan broke it usually put a hole in the side of the fan casing! The Kevlar these fans are made of is tougher anyway.

    • @larrytraber
      @larrytraber 5 лет назад +1

      A metal fan would be harder for the motor to spin so it would make the vacuum less powerful.

    • @compactc9
      @compactc9 5 лет назад +1

      Larry meh, I doubt this, there’s not a noticeable difference. It really had more to do with making the fan less brittle. These new kevlar fans are extremely durable, and it takes a lot to break one. I see Kirby’s all the time with those Emtors at the bottom of the bag just full or screws, nails, pebbles and spare change, but the fan just looks a little gnawed on...

    • @mattjones7621
      @mattjones7621 4 года назад +1

      @@compactc9 Yes, the newer fans are an improvement. The metal ones are durable, but they can break if you pick up something really hard. I have broken a few in my time trying to get them off the armature, lol. I really, really hate those gray Lexan fans. Those things get stress fractures over time and they break under pressure.

      Mine wasn't broken anywhere either but it was making an awful squeeling noise when the impeller would slow down after turning it off. I hadn't noticed that it was really noisy all around until I ran it with the new impeller. Now it sounds and works like brand new. Glad you're not running into the same issue.

    Most vacuums these days are bagless and have the impeller after the dirt container so this wouldn't even have happened.

    9mm is common on bikes in the UK. Metric has been used since the 70's here, but as America still today tends to use imperial, is that why you never used a 9mm on a bicycle?

    NOT helpful to film the initial disassembly from the wrong side! Apart from the first couple of front screws, no-one can see which screws you are removing. It would have been much better to rotate the cleaner as you went around removing the screws.

    Takes me back to our Kirby Heritage II. My sister was vacuuming out her car using the canister mode using the hose attachments and the hose fell onto our gravel driveway and she accidentally sucked up a large rock and it really damaged the impeller to the point where it wouldn't spin.
    Here is what funny here. Back in April we had a door to door Kirby salesman and he was trying to sell us a the Kirby Avalir 2 for a whopping $980 bucks which was close to the same price that we paid for our Kirby Heritage II back in 1986.
