My only issue with the misunderstanding is why Aang didn't assume he was gonna go with them to meet their dad. Like, they've made so many stops and detours during this journey. What's one more?
Wait a minute your right that didn't cross my mind Aang's all about adventuring and Katara and Sokka weren't just gonna take Aang with them
Maybe Aang thought they would stay with their dad?
Exactly
@@kingpenguin1580 i mean i doubt that would come to his mind like katara really wanted to be a water bender and there dad was fighting a war so like the most he'd think they'd stay would be a few days.
@@cokelover-nb1qz I didn’t believe my comment, it’s just a suggestion to fill a plot hole
Modern western cultures do have rights of passage like this. We give 16 year olds massive tin death machines that move up to 100+ mph
Well, in most western countries we wait until they are 18;-)
True, but most western states also let you get drunk at that age and while youre not supposed to do those at the same time...

I like the fact that Appa has no hesitation in ending somebody's life
the air nomads may have had some oath against intentional killing, but the sky bison have no such qualms
appa is the real war criminal
Appa: "I have no such weakness"
I swear the only reason this was a favorite episode of mine was to see Appa go ham
he's like: WELL I'M NO FUCKING AIR NOMAD SO KILLING IS ON THE FUCKING TABLE BITCH
Aang is not vegan, he's vegetarian. He is explicitly fine with eating egg, but that's a detail from the Great Divide, so I wouldn't be surprised if you missed it. He sees an egg custard tart when all the food spill out, and he really wants it.
huh that's interesting.I was making a theory that because he grew up on a vegan society, there's an abundance of vegan food, which makes him picky.
@@nadiahapsari3359 the air nomads don't strike me as vegan. vegan means no animal products at all, it doesn't just mean no meat it also means no dairy. i'm fairly positive aang couldn't have gone the entire series without eating something that had butter or milk in it.
If Aang was Vegan, he wouldn’t ride Appa around
There was a moment where Appa straight up tries to crush June. Like, he stomps the spot she'd been flung to with his full strength, destroying part of the flooring.
She absolutely would've died.
Aang has moral objections to killing.
Appa doesn’t give a fuck.
Appa will kill a man who looks at him funny.

yeah i think it's kinda important to remember that aang is literally 12 in this episode. yeah he withheld the info on their father, but only for a few hours, and he felt so guilty that he came clean. and sokka and katarra just leave this actual 12 year old to face the fire lord after yelling at him. extreme overreaction
I agree, but they're also literally like 15 and 13 or 14, so it's not like they're much more mature than Aang. they were just betrayed by a friend, it makes sense to have an initial instinctual overreaction that they then stick to.
I agree with both of you but I have to say with Either Aang or Katara and Sokka because of their poor decision making
@@samwarren2850they grew up in war aang didn’t so sokka and katara realistically would’ve been alot more mature
I also feel like Katara was sincerely torn between going with Aang and going with Sokka. Sokka was the one who had most of the overreaction but it was from a place of childhood trauma, just like when Aang hid the map.

June was always one of my favorite side characters, but her mount seemed a bit OP. You're telling me she tamed this thing which can track people across continents, can rip apart a metal ship, and can cause temporary paralysis in anything it attacks (although easier against smaller things like humans), but nobility doesn't bother breeding and training them for military or personal tracking units? Even if you only had one to protect your estate, it would suddenly be a lot easier to track whoever stole from you- imagine if a policing force had a unit of these instead of K9 units!
That's a really good point. Kind of makes me disappointed that we didn't see one pop up in Korra. To be fair though, her entire character revolved around being a badass, so it's not that surprising that she's the only one to tame one. They may also be quite rare and difficult to breed for some reason. Some animals don't reproduce well in captivity.
Also even Jun has trouble controlling him at one point in the episode, methinks they would be too volatile to domesticate on a large scale.
And plus, since it's blind and it's from the Earth Kingdom, I'd imagine those claws must be extremely strong for slashing, digging, and climbing. To be honest, if I was a hunter in the ATLA or LOK world, I would just have one of those with a pack of giant eel hounds. The xierxu would track down the animal or target and the eel hounds when they spot it, will chase or swim after it. According to Pian Dao, Sokka's teacher and is op with a sword, he claims nothing runs faster on land or swims quicker than a giant eel hound making that kind of combo essential for hunting either humans or animals like bounty hunting.
Perhaps it's a really rare/endangered creature like dragons or air bison.
Super headcannon-y. But I always assumed it was just like...a fluke that she tamed it. And in the wild these things are just savage killing machines. Yknow....like real star nosed moles. lol
Interesting that Sokka had never been ice-dodging and in episode 1 he got his boat smooshed by icebergs. Sokka boat steering continuity?
Ice floes, not bergs
"Oh, there goes June on that big fuckin' monster thing she's got" is one of my favorite episodes.
So fun fact: I was way into goth girls when I was younger. June, Mavis from Hotel Transylvania. Blackfire.
It's a little weird to me that Bato, the adult, doesn't make an effort to include Aang, the child, in the conversations.
I mean not many parents try to talk to their own children nowadays
Pretty sure everyone had a slight crush on Blackfire.
i actually feel the same, but i think that mindset tells more about us than about the character, and i think its a good thing (the adult not including the child, not the goth crush)
I think you don't know many real world adults if you think that's weird. Most adults leave children out of things without even noticing it.
@@vidmanandrew09 Starfire, Raven and Jinx yes. Blackfire no, she was to much of a bitch.
I was taking a drink of water when you made the joke about how long they’ve had the necklace and this is zuko’s necklace now and I almost spit it out laughing
*Such* a good joke, surprised I didn’t see anyone else mention it.
Don't forget, June is voiced by Jennifer Hale who also voices Avatar Kyoshi (and numerous other characters in cartoons and video games, such as Commander Shepard in Mass Effect). Also that line from Iroh about 'one big surprise left' is extra melancholy given the death of his voice actor Mako partway through the series
Kyoshi renegade interrupted that warlord so hard he passed away
Okay, thank Christ I'm not the only one who thinks this episode has the best fight of the season.
Seriously. Kinda sucks we never got a lot of dynamic Aang vs Zuko fights.
I think about that Aang and Zuko fight a lot actually. It's great. It really sticks out. Love the joke with Zuko thinking he has Aang trapped down the well only for Aang to reverse it on him. They don't get enough showdowns.
Kinda reminds me of Goku and Vegeta in DBZ, how Vegeta has a volatile series-long grudge against Goku that pervades everything he does when they themselves have actually fought like...once. Twice if you count when Vegeta gets mind controlled.
It's also my favorite fight of the season, honestly one of my favorites in the show because it's a good balance of bending, physicality and character moments.
but this has one of the weakest writing on the first seasons. From the cliched situation where Aang leave right before Sokka said they had to leave with him, or when Iroh fell out of character when he grabs Junes. The writer for this episode don't write any more episodes lol

HUH? You are a fan of Avatar? A man of good taste and funny videos, you have my respect.
I have a feeling that people who say that Aang is behaving out of character in this episode forget that he's *a 12 years old boy who lost everyone he ever knew* and that he still hasn't embraced that he's the avatar. There's still some of the frightened child that ran away from home in him.

Thanks for pointing out that Sokka didn’t go to sleep as usual but kept stirring the fire. I missed that. I just love that the show gives us these details without adding some explanatory dialogue.
The last sentence in your comment made me think of the Netflix adaptation
I will say, I get Katara’s reactionary choice to leave w/ Sokka. She’s misses her dad as well, and being around Bato likely has intensified these homesick feelings, plus the significant cultural and family moment she just got to have with her brother that they had trustingly invited Aang into (who knows if non-tribesmen have ever been a part of that tradition before?), for him to not show them the same trust back by assuming they’d abandon him would upset any teenager I think.
Aw man I can't believe you didn't mention that Zuko and Aang have a mirrored shot during their fight scene. Zuko runs forward with his arm extended behind him like a flaming dagger ( 8:07 in this video) and Aang jumps over him, blows him back to the wall, and then runs forward with the same stance.
Definitely my favorite part of the episode. It's the little details that connect Aang and Zuko even before the series really branches out!
i thought it was an animation goof, but i should have known better
Zuko's learning from Aang
It's even shown earlier when Zuko keeps up with Aang's circle walking
Is this episode really widely disliked? Why? The only issue I have is Sokka and Katara getting weirdly mad at Aang, and then getting over it like a second later. But Aang lying about the map was a great character moment and like this video said, the action scene at the end is amazing.
Mainly about them getting mad and just leaving him to learn the elements on his own. Then not realizing that if Aang doesn't win the war/battle the firelord, the Water Tribe along with the Earth Kingdom will get wiped out (probably)
I think some fans also strangely hate it when Aang displays some of his flaws, especially the ones that could be considered immoral like lying.
Well if Sokka’s flashback to his father leaving is anything to go by, it seems like he realized he would be putting Aang through the same pain he felt when his dad left, and that’s why he decided to go back.
There’s also the super out of character Iroh scene at the end and the fact Bato was a very uninteresting character.
@Tom4704 I've been a loyal crew member of the Zutara ship for years, and I don't mind this episode.
I remember not care too much about team-avatars plot line in this episode, but the callbacks to the locations in the world is still what I remember. So when you analyse it - it's still a good episode to build the world and characterisation. The locations they have visited are still there. They feel lived and makes the world bigger.
It also showcase more non-bending people in the world and how badass they still are, compared to bending-people.
One cool thing about the Aang v Zuko fight is when they're on the roof, they both do the same kind of attack in the same way one after another, one being with air and the other being with fire.
The quality of this series has done nothing but increase! Keep it up
I sure most people noticed this but I love how Aang and Zuko have identical fight techniques that you can see when there are both on the roof, and when ever you see aang air bending you can find a lot of similarities to fire bending which is pretty neat since that’s like suppose to be the good and “evil” sides this show has so much depth.
I didn't like this episode the first time I watched it. I didn't like how Aang got shafted by Sokka and Katara, but now watching again I realise that despite it being primarily being shot from Aang's perspective, this is actually a story all about Sokka. Sokka has primarily been comic relief throughout the show until now, he has some moments but they're frequently shallow or undermined by the other characters. But here he has serious, quiet moments and we get a glimpse of his true value to the team in a fitting story about coming of age.
Aang is kinda understandable here in why he kept the map from sokka and katara. He's already lost his original family, and that's a trauma thats been well established that it effects him deeply.
Combine that with the fact he's 12, you know, a kid? Kids do stupid impulsive things especially when they've gone through trauma.
Thinking ahead here: Will you do Korra after Overanalyzing Avatar? What will you do after Avatar anyways? Love the series and need more
Once he's done with Korra, Avatar Studio's will have new content out. So he should be able to do this for quite some time.

@@matityaloran9157 xD Exactly my sentiment, this Razbuten person keeps appearing in all of these comment sections from multiple people :P
aang’s actions in this always seemed pretty realistic to me. the parts where he keeps trying to be a part of the conversation in the tent with bato (by bringing up related stuff about himself) and failing was pretty relatable to me as an adhd kid who couldn’t shut up. add in his backstory and of course he would feel rejected and react stupidly
i think an important thing to remeber here is that 2 episodes ago aang talks about how all off his friends are dead along with everyone he knew when he confided in zuko. then a filler apisode and then a serious threat comes in to take his friends away. i totaly get why aang was jelous and afraid to tell them.
Just want to say that avatar is my favorite show of all time as well, and I’ve watched it wayyy too much. And you are like the perfect channel for me. You really know your stuff about this show, and it shows
Always loved this episode. All the problems people had with it never bothered me. Also, FINALLY someone mentions how amazing that Aang vs Zuko fight is. I can’t think of another 1v1 fight in season one to be so dynamic, well choreographed, and all around fun. Easily the stand out moment for me.
I think part of why I dislike this episode so much is that my big pet peeve is when shows have forced conflicts that could be resolved by just having 1 conversation just to add conflict the problem is probably also exacerbated because they do a similar conflict in the chase except better in every way showing they could do it right
I think this is a fair point. But I feel I can let it slide just cause they're kids and kids aren't the most mature and rational about things when they get emotional
Hey Bro, one of my subs just told me about your channel. Love the content! Keep up the great work💪💪
Ey yo.
0:41 I never noticed Zukos closes his eyes, thats funny
I think the writers knew that this was a weak episode character-wise, so they went way harder on that fight scene than usual, and it shows. Easily one of the best fights in the show, rather than showing creative uses of bending, it’s just straight up two masters of the basics going at eachother. Really fast-paced.
S1 was the kiddiest the show was and it still had hard lessons
One of the things I love about this episode is when sokka orders aang and katara to use there bending for a harder part of the rocks. He had already passed the test and now was demonstrating part of his full potential. How many water tribe warriors can learn the capabilities and and limits of benders especially one from a different nation. He learned that and was able to complete a harder section of the rock dodging course by taking advantage of there abilities.
I think the joke about Miuki having gotten into trouble with fire nation before is great. Like, it's a pretty easy one, but still funny.
I only just noticed that the tavern in this episode is the same one where June is found in book 3!
I feel like this is one of the episodes thats really focuses on Sokka and his journey, which we dont get enough of outside of "The Master" which is all the way in season 3.
When you realize June’s voice actor is the same as the lead Hex Girl in Scooby Doo and The Witches Ghost. She just oozes those badass character vibes and I love it.
That's General Shepard to you
Personally as someone who's close with their older brother, I'd have some major issues if Katara didn't go with Sokka
2:40 (general grievous voice) "Ah the negotiator"
ok BIG THING I NOTICED!!!
During the Ang vs. Zuko fight, while they are on that roof top, zuko fire bends at Ang. Then just afterwards Ang dodges and then fights back with his airbending and slams Zuko into the wall( the move used at 7:15 in the video) If you pay attention, you will realize that the move Ang use on Zuko, used the same motions as Zuko's firebending attack. This not only shows that Ang is learning to take inspiration from other elements(especially now that he's actually learning water bending), and also shows the similarities between air bending and fire bending(and why Ang catches on so quickly)
Love your positive energy throughout, I get tired of everyone’s roasting channels. Even your digs are said lightheartedly. 10/10
I'm glad someone said something about the dragon head in the tea scene. I've been thinking that since since show first aired.

5:42 Considering how Katara reacted when Jet and eventually Zuko broke her trust, I wouldn't say it's entirely out there. On the other hand, if there's one person Katara tends to let a lot of stuff slide with, it's Aang. So it's kind of both an under- *and* overreaction. Either way, it is sad that what gets him in trouble is when he comes clean: as you say, it's only a matter of hours, and heck, he could have just pretended he'd forgotten about it.
I sort of wonder if sea prunes are one of those "thing in the sea named after a plant, but it's actually an animal" things, which might explain Aang's reaction to it.
Also a weird if unimportant moment now I think about it: why did the necklace lead June et al to the herbalist? Katara never went to visit her, only Aang.
this episode had great world building
3:55 EVIDENCE OF NORMAL CAT
your deep dives and humor are always spot on. i am surprised you didn't bring up the connection between the moment in this episode where sokka comments that he thinks zuko is pretty stupid correlating with aang's joke about zuko's intelligence in the firebending masters saying he doesn't care what others think and that zuko is actually pretty smart being a call back to this episode.
You talking about Appa fight scenes makes me think about this one part where Appa is on a boat, he throws man off the boat, and has the wackiest radical shift in style and looks, he looks like something you'd find in a shitty online Kindergarten learning website, I think it's in the invasion? I'm not sure, keep an eye out for it

your humor and analysis makes my day. keep it up :D
5:35 losing his staff all the time is bad enough, but now he’s lost the mark on his head too? This is getting ridiculous
I really thought you were gonna point out that the necklace has Katara's scent on it, so the shirshu is tracking Katara’s scent. But the shirshu stops by the old lady and the cat, a place where Katara never visited, so her scent wouldn't be there.
2:19..... BRUH

7:16 "SPEED AND WEIGHT!" -Bob's catchphrase in Tekken after fattening up.
I always hate the dramatic irony misunderstanding for the third act darkest hour trope. It's just such a lazy way to setup character stakes which completely ruins the opportunity for bigger character moments. For instance, Aang getting and crumpling up the map is believable, but not exactly fun to watch. What would have been more interesting to watch than what we got was him saying that he did that before the icedodging sequence, followed by a big character speech where he explains himself and says sorry, followed by the really fun icedodging sequence. That way, the character stuff can have resolution before the action climaxes. It would've taken some creative writing to make work, but it could have been done and I think that would be much less disliked.
These videos are all great I hope you stick with this it's so fun to watch

My one problem with this video is the fact you didn't give any attention to "Miyuki, did you get yourself in trouble with the fire nation again?"
Implying some random herbologist's cat somehow caused trouble amongst the fire nation army
i just want you to know that I've rewatched this video series like maybe 3 times so far and that Aku joke just never fails to make me at least chuckle everytime it happens
The “Zuko’s Mom Smell” joke raises an interesting question of why June wasn’t his first choice when looking for her. I guess he didn’t have any still-functional smell samples lying around after all that time?
yeah, probably not. any tracks nearby would've also been long gone probably, and her smell could've changed
Just binged all of your videos, top notch! I have re-watched avatar more times than I can count and you just gave me another excuse to re-watch it again. Good blend of comedy, facts, and overall appreciation for such a wonderful show!
Thanks for tuning in.
Iroh: "At my age there's really only one big surprise left, and I'd just as soon leave it a mystery"
Am I the only one who was terrified that this was foreshadowing as a kid?
It's a well ingrained trope for the wise old mentor to die halfway through the series. Avatar kind of has something like that when Iroh gets captured at the end of season 2.
Finally someone who gets it, honestly the ATLA fandom hates on Aang in this episode way too much. Aang lost everyone he knew and everyone he loved after the genocide, and after breaking out of the iceberg Katara and Sokka basically became his new and only living, human family (saying human because of Appa and Momo). Not to mention Aang is only 12, so when he realized that Sokka and Katara might be abandoning him, he understandably did whatever he could to make sure he wouldn’t lose them, which is definitely in character for him, although still selfish. Sokka and Katara even get very mad at him about it and Aang faces the consequences of his actions. So honestly I think Aang was written very well in this episode.
Imo, if anyone wasn’t written so well this episode it would be Iroh because of his weird and out of character affection for June. Gonna get hate for saying this but this just reminds me of the disgusting ‘older male mentor/teacher has pedo-like attraction to younger women/girls’ character trope used in some older cartoons/anime. If the writers wanted a character for Iroh to be flirtatious with they should’ve chose Aunt Wu.
This fandom is surprisingly affected by empathy, and emotional displays, but doesn't entirely understand what they're seeing. But seeing as it's one of the more increasingly unempathetic generations, I think it's probably just, a lack of content or experiences like these to draw from.
agreed about the Iroh thing lol

"Sokka, put your stuff away Sokka, you're not old to go to war right now Sokka "
I love that before Zuko even becomes Aang’s teacher, he’s learning from him. There’s this move Zuko does with his fire will he’s running toward Aang after they blow each other onto the roof and Aang mirrors it with air 😮
*before Zuko becomes his teacher
You missed one of the funniest jokes in the whole show. After sokka and kitara get hit by the tongue and end up at the... nunnery? Sokka starts to slowly lift up his arm.
"I'm starting to get some feeling back!" He says
*Parts of the roof falls on him*
"Ow..."
2:25 😂 I just spit my cereal all over my cat laughing so hard. Best joke in series so far
It confused me so much how upset sokka and katara were when I first watched this episode, aang kept the map from them for like a couple hours. I wouldve forgot about it and given them the map like a week later
I also think the healers of the village turning on him so quickly was a weird moment. First of all how would they know about Aang's betrayal it's not like they would have been given a detailed explanation about it. Second why would they feel so strongly about it anyway? It didn't affect them at all. I get that the villagers probability wouldn't trust him anymore but their reaction was a bit to over the top. It's one of the things that ruins this episode for me.
Sokka's reaction makes sense considering that he hasn't seen a famoly member in 2 years and theres a big war going on
Doubt the writers thought about this but Iroh saying he wants to leave his one big surprise (death) a mystery kinda plays into Iroh just big chilling in the spirit world during Legend of Korra.
Did he die? Did he achieve some sort of enlightenment while he was alive? We don't know, that's kinda cool.
Good stuff as always, see ya next time!
I'm glad you commented on Iroh holding June after she got paralyzed... If I didn't love him so much, I'd be mad he did something so cringy...
BESIDES SOKKA GROWING TO LEARN HE NEEDS TO BE "MAN ENOUGH" TO KNOW WHEN TO HELP AANG, i also think its a contrast in the sense that Sokka was left by his only family in the same way he, Aangs only family, left Aang, (both sharing the concept of being too young for a situation) and hearing bato talk about the pack separation, he realizes he cant leave to let Aang face that same music
2:24 That innuendo moment was definitely on point!😂
