  • Searle Wright was an American composer, performer, and educator. "Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song, best known today as the tune to the Christmas carol "What Child Is This?". The lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865. At the time of composing the carol, Dix became struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including the lyrics to this carol. Although it was written in Great Britain, the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin.
This piece is played here by Geoff Olson, organist of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Paul, MN. The organ is a 1916 Wicks pipe organ with later pipes added by the Hunt Organ Company for a total of 30 ranks. The pipes are supplemented with a Hauptwerk virtual organ system, using the 65-stop 1877 Father Willis Organ at Salisbury Cathedral, England. This piece uses a zimbelstern built by Tim Patterson of Associated Organ Builders. To listen to more of my organ videos, go to / geoffolson1039 .
Hope you enjoy this piece and thanks for listening.
