I love how loose and informal your brush strokes are. You're so right - the artist kind of shmooshes the details away in the shadow but then your brain fills in what is missing. Beautiful exercise - and thanks for sharing your little one! He's growing like a weed! Merry Christmas to your whole family. Victoria British Columbia Canada🎄

Never seen this site before. Enjoyed it so much, you are ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️ brilliant! I want that painting too... Yours will be fine!😄 As an illustrator with 50 years of work behind me, now trying to paint what I want to paint, in semi-retirement, I struggle to let that loose brushwork happen, because illustration can be small and tight and terribly limiting. I have found that taking off my glasses can make a huge difference for the first nine-tenths of the painting. I did a painting recently with stars in it. I found a very effective technique was to wait until the Titanium white was quite dry (😥patience) and then touch up some of them very gently with fluorescent Aquarelle crayon. It sort of throws the whole galaxy into a 3-D sparkle.

You really capture so much of the spontaneity and looseness of brush strokes that the original had. And just as a heads up many American and international museums have super hi-res images available for download as a part of an open-access program(tied to fair use of public domain work). Perhaps the next time you could use one of those so you could see a close up of the brushstrokes.

G'dy Andrew - great to see this RUclips link pop into my email. Always such a joy to watch you develop your paintings and love that you copy a Master to learn - it's one of my most favourite things to do. If I hear a friend mention their favourite artist or painting I'm on it for their next big birthday :) I try to get a copy as near to the original size but Guernica had to be reduced somewhat 🤣
Whilst painting I'm constantly having my mind blown re colour, composition, looseness, detail etc - the total talent that was present when the original was created - wow! The study that takes place whilst doing a copy is priceless and yes indeed - to find the original, or a study of it, that you can stand in front of to look - really look - is an incredible joy! If I can I change a detail that brings in something as a nod to the friend I love to add that in, too. I'm clearly making a copy and not trying to fake an original - love, love, love the challenge. Great to see Hugo feature at the end 🤗. Thank you for all you bring to the art world Andrew - bless you.

I fell in love with Landseer's painting called 'Eos', the favorite greyhound of Prince Albert and after finding a tiny image in a magazine I made a copy. I didn't know then the real size but I guessed ( a bit small ) and painted in sitting on a sofa at night and with no glasses ! I still have it and find it really good amazingly as I had never done an oil painting before. I am not a painter but I do love painting. I prepared two other boards (linen sized onto wood), one huge one to paint Oudry's Clara and the other to paint 'Two hounds tied to a stump' by Jacopo Bassano but never got around to doing them. I even went to see the Hounds at the Louvre as it has just been bought by the state, amazing picture. I applied to a famous art copist in the Louvre to train with him and he accepted but I had to leave the country as I was setting up a company in South America. I missed a great opportunity there !

Good job, looks beautiful! As for the original: I most definitely see him applying the lightest and the white strokes AFTER the rest is dry, and with the thickest, varnish mixed paint. For example we see this in the mustaches of the lion - you posed them on wet paint and they mixed, got thicker and darker, his are crisp, lain on dry surface. He probably did “turpentine aquarelle, then when dry - thicker nuances mosaic on top of that, then when that dried the lightest with thickest.

I’m just curious as to the purpose of a burnt umber wash prior to sketching it in. Does it in some way enhance the art in your opinion. I always block in my colors to match what I will be painting on my next layer. I see this method of washes though and I am intrigued. I do think that the contrasting color peeking through, especially on edges, adds a lot of interest. Is that what you’re going for? Thanks in advance 😊

Andrew I am so in awe of your talent. This "exercise" of painting a copy of this Masterpiece has created an exquisite piece that would be a real compliment to the artist that painted the original painting. Both.the master painting and your beautiful copy have captured a powerful moment in time within nature. The darling baby in the video seemed to also like this painting too. Thank you for sharing your learning process. I hope someday I will be able to visit your gallery.and see your works of art in.person. Maybe even be in a position to purchase one of your beauties for my own home. I look forward to watching your future videos and ones I have yet to see.that are of your earlier works. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. Sincerely, Anita (Cslgary, Alberta, Canada)

On selfishness! You're not threatening by sharing information. Which you shouldn't be . What a guy!
