A 16-year-old girl -- with a noticeable black eye -- has come to the hospital to identify the body of her mother, who passed away. But because she's young, the people in charge won't let her into the morgue, due to the fact that she has no ID.
She faces great obstacles as she tries to navigate the opaque layers of policies and bureaucracy in order to identify the body. She has no uncle, grandfather or father to accompany her or vouch for her.
But after much begging and pleading, the receptionist finally allows her to go back. But when she finally gets a private moment with the body, the young girl has more on her mind than simply saying goodbye, as a whole other layer of action and meaning unfolds.
Writer-director Alireza Ghasemi's short drama from Iran is a powerful, incisive examination of the harsh realities faced by young girls in this society. When faced with a difficult yet common situation, the main character isn't regarded as an autonomous human being. Even though she's young and without an ID, she constantly faces dismissal at the most fundamental levels because she's not accompanied by a man who can vouch for her.
The storytelling uses naturalistic camerawork and intelligent, realistic writing to embed this assumption deep within the societal obstacles she faces. This insidious idea undergirds how various people talk to the young girl, and their assumptions of what she should and shouldn't do form the biggest obstacle to her needs.
The dialogue works realistically to portray this, delivered with understated, subtle nuance and precision by a uniformly excellent cast. The characters don't deliver messages or speak from soapboxes -- they're simply doing their jobs, armed with an understanding of what is or isn't appropriate for a young woman. The young girl must constantly butt up against their attitudes. And as a result, the frustration she experiences is completely understandable, and empathetic viewers feel her helplessness as their own.
The film's initial half works as a powerful social document in many ways, powerfully yoking attitudes about women to the obstacles faced by the young girl.
However, as the second half unfolds, the film gains a new layer of plot, creating suspense and tension that is almost thriller-like in its ability to draw in viewers with narrative questions so intriguing that they demand answers. By delving into the darker underside of the young girl's situation -- one that isn't fully elucidated until a revealing conversation at the film's end -- we get a darker, more insidious look at how young women are controlled in this society.
An audience and jury favorite at Cannes, LUNCH TIME is like a Moebius strip of a narrative, in which one story is built up, only to be twisted in an entirely new direction. The deceptively simple narrative structure and writing reveal themselves to be much more sophisticated and sly, as it constructs one picture and then upends itself to illuminate a thornier, more complicated picture.
Yet the unifying thread is a powerful portrayal of control and domination, achieved on multiple levels. The young girl faces it not only at the bureaucratic, institutional level, but in a more personal, intimate way -- which makes imagining her escape all the more difficult. The lack of true freedom is simply everywhere the young girl goes, shadowing everything she is able to do or not do, making its influence all the more pervasive and felt.
For those who wonder who was the guy on the bike at the end, he is her brother. Why? First, because in Iran, you don't hit your uncle, especially if you are a girl. Second, at 14:40 she says: "It was MOM", which is "Maman" in Persian. She doesn't say: "MY MOM", which would be "Mamanam", and the guy says: "I know it was MOM." Again he doesn't say: "YOUR MOM", which would be "Mamanet". In Persian, like in English, you say "mom" or "dad", ONLY if you are talking to someone with whom you share that parent. Otherwise you always say: "MY mom" or "MY dad".

As an Iranian let me explain my understanding of this. Iran’s current society is extremely corrupt and the people although not shown by the media are suffering due to the high cost of living. The girl in the film im assuming is demanded by her brother/man to go scavange their dead mother for anything valuable that they can use. However the key here is that, the film did an excellent job at portraying the sad “every man for themselves” cold world that is the current state of iran. The people are not at fault! The dictator regime have greatly influenced the social dynamics of iran.
We don't know who the victim is in this story. The father who's addicted, the mother who is dead, the uncle who is gone or the daughter who's abused and alone! This is what happens when there is no equality between men and women. Patriarchy is awful! Not that women are not capable of similar cruelty. I think the poor girl got punched by her father who was asking her to go and get her mother's gold teeth so he can sell them to feed his addiction. He threw the paper, authorising to pay to take the body, away because then he would have to pay for the funeral too. Addiction is a horrible disease! It can change a person to their cruellest state. The amount to pay was only around 13 Euros/Pounds.
Not as corrupt as when they had the Shah in the 70's, the hard times of the Iranian people is do to the sanction put on them by the west courtesy of the United States and Israel. Thats right anything not produced there only gets there from the black market, It's not Irans fault a 50 cents can of beans cost 10 dollars. Iran is the 3rd largest oil supplier and should be doing good in the world, ask any Venezuelan the largest oil supplier how life is, it sucks because we are oppressing them too. The sad reality is you an Iranian are indoctrinated by the satanic USA.

Being half Iranian I personally think it’s much deeper than her taking her mother’s teeth (which were maybe gold fillings and worth money hence why her brother made her take them) the purpose of this short film was to show how women in Iran are treated a lot differently than men. For example her not being able to identify her mother without a man present. Also the people working in the hospital probably knew she was punched by a man but they couldn’t do much about it. My take on it👍🏽

I think if an underage boy went they'd want to see I.D. or ask for an adult too. If she was 1 yr older and had a photo but she was allowed to see her Mother. I saw her feeling the jaw on the outside? What was she looking for? If it was gold teeth, she would know if her Mother had them or not. What was the thing in the small sacket? I get this film tries to send a message but they got it all wrong in my opinion.

The one on the bike was her uncle. Father was in rehab
And she had to take gold teeth and give it to uncle as it is the uncle who forces her to do so. And cuz the girl refused to do so! She was beaten by uncle. That's why she was equiped with spoon and other stuff to pull the teeth.

In iran there is lots of dark stories everyday. And as an Iranian, I can only hear some of them and their stories carry so much pain and sorrow that can make you so angry and painful. Today a beautiful 22 year old girl, got killed by her father because he was dating. The father burned her alive! And she died in hospital. She was just like me but had a different story to tell.

Common people in Iran are suffering a lot and it is very sad, there is nothing in my power to help but all I can say is stay strong and hope that this regime either gets softer or democracy comes in.

As an iranian who even is not inside of iran i touched the pain its really hard to deal with all of these issue in young age our country after islamic revolution got too many problems and people are dealing with economies problem very hard days 😪
This.. wow. After realising the truth of the story, from figuring out the subtle hints given throughout its run, this film is truly brilliant and sad. Very well made film, I love it.
What's the truth exactly? Please elaborate. Did she take teeth? That plastic, did the mom eat cyanide? Cause the damage looked like she was captive somewhere.

If we focus comments on the film, and what we've actually seen instead prompting a broader political debate (and those never end well in RUclips comments), we'd be discussing the possibility that the deceased woman was involved in some sought of illicit activity.
I saw the daughter find a hidden baggie with a powdery residue, and I'm sure the only reason you would have to feel the jawline the way she did was to ascertain the concealment of something in the mouth.
I know about the problems real people face in countries like Iran, and this was an intriguing snapshot of the atmosphere that I trust is as accurate as necessary.
However for me, the ending left me without anything to ponder, just a grim, heartrending situation.

It's not bad for everyone. I moved here recently it's really not that bad, plus in cities, it's pretty modern. It mostly depends on the personal life situation rather than the setting in some cases.
I saw this film at an event a little while back and thought it was great. I’m looking forward to attending and hosting short film events again soon but in the meantime there are so many wonderful films on here.

Families with Drug abuse often use Children as a means to an end , have them work instead of Going to school,
Sometimes it's just the plain poverty that pushes the children to help the family but this case is too rare .
When approached by Police, the Children usually don't snitch their parents, in most cases , the Police will take away the child for Foster care, some who are older remain in the foster care, Girls usually end up becoming teachers and boys usually end up enlisted in the military since these are the easiest avenues of carrier
The parents can retain the Right to Children but only if they are behaviorally or economically liable
Most cases includes the adoption of child by another family member, if not any... then that's that

Whenever there is something about Iran in video it's typically not in good lighting (especially towards women). Though in the "comments down below" Iranians say these are mostly false and Iran is much nicer place...??? Do they have RUclips in Iran? Where would I get an honest view, being their media is government controlled like every other nice place in this world?

The corpse after a while would get stiffened and lose its flexibility. So they have to tie the feet and the hand's thumbs together so that the dead body won't get an unpleasant shape.

you should update your id with a picture when you get to 16 and also we have to ids one is given to you when you born and it has details such as youe parents names their dates of births your future marrige and devorces etc and its like a little booklet(its called shenasname) and one is when you get after you turn 16 and it has less details and its just a card.and they both need to have photos
Okay, so there are two types in the comments : people who are familiar with Iranian life who get it, and people that are not familiar with Iranian life and dont. Please, can someone give this some context? We get that the girl was manipulated and is being abused, but how? Why? What does the guy at the end have to gain? How poor are these people and how valuable are the five whatevers? Was there any other way to retrieve the five whatevers? I cant appreciate the story if I dont understand the context
This is why Omeletto is fun: we don't *get* all the details, we get sketches. We can *imagine* all sorts of factors that fit: The girl not actually being the woman's daughter, for example, and ripping off a dead neighbor's corpse.

Hi, so theres a woman dead and the brother or whatever that man was knew of the existence of the gold teeth. So he uses the little girl(but now the hospital have fingerprints of the girl if anything goes wrong). The little told the guy the hospital need this much money for us to get moms body the guy said hell with mom and threw the paper on the ground and told her to hop on the bike. Seems like theres abuse of some kind to the women of Iran . The dead woman had scratches on her face.
Chrisma Kisaka Scratches happen when you have an accident but maybe the father was demanding the gold teeth from the mother when she was alive. After she refused, he beat her and kill her and then made it all like an accident. That part of the story hasn't be written so we can think whatever we like.
