Gear Top 7: My Personal Favorites In 2018
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
- Ever since Nick Hornby invented lists in the nineties, humans never got tired of things ordered by numbers. Here is my completely biased and absolutely personal list of instruments and gear released in 2018 that inspired me, be it bought or endorsed.
SPOILERS:
1. Koma Elektronik Field Kit FX
2. AC Noises AMA
3. Morfbeats Gamelan Strips
4. David Bellinger eKalimba (Patch Point)
5. Bastl Thyme
6. Oto Machines Boum
7. Squarp Hermod
Disclaimer because transparency is important to me: no company colluded with me to make this list. I did get endorsed with a few products over the year but with no set of directions or agreements to promote them, especially not in a video like this. Also, there is a joke about lists in the opening statement of this description.
Happy New Year!

I love your expression at 11:44 ...."crush it." Shows the passion you have for your work. Love it.
cant stop imagining the crowds face melting
I love your videos! You have a great welcoming personality. I always feel like I just arrived at your home for a visit with an old friend.
Thanks for introducing us all to the gamelan strips! I like that you don't just promote "flavor of the month" stuff (Elektron, Moog, volcas, etc.), but rather gear that adds character and personality to a setup.
Moog is flavour of the month?
That said, this organic/acoustic electronic gear is really interesting.
@@JarrodFerris Moog is quality gear, don't get me wrong. What I mean by "Flavor of the month" is new gear that gets hyped with a bunch of "video reviews" uploaded by different synth youtubers all on the same day, each of them essentially saying "You totally need this new thing!"
If you want to make that list of gear you discovered in 2018 that wasn't made in 2018, I'd love to see that too
Ha, that would be fun too! I have something I want to do with new old gear next, which might tie in or be its own thing.
Agreed. I would watch the shit out of that :)
@@smacksalad that goes without saying, we would watch him sequence his own farts if it had enough tape saturation on it.
HAINBACH You're nutz , your music expresses you exactly . I'm breaking out my cassette four track , korg plus all my 18 pedals n mini disk player tomorrow . never looking back :)
I hope to get my home made Z80 computers making some music very soon. Oh i forgot its almost 2020 :)
I got hip to you a couple of months back - and you really inspired me! I have been working "inside the box" since the mid 90s (technically for many of the those years I was a gigging bassist). I recently walked away from the professional art world (I was doing sound design and composition for live theater after a couple of years beating my head against the walls the movie studios in Los Angeles). I have been trying to get back to making music, and sound art for myself again. Like I did back in the 90s.... back then I had next to nothing to make music - a cracked copy of acid pro - a tascam 4 track - a danelectro echo pedal (still the only one I have ever had - got it for 20 bucks used back in 98 - minimal but built like a tank - I didn't have a proper audio interface - plugging a Sure 56 D- dynamic mic into the back of my sound blaster card with a stereo mini plug adaptor was the only way I could "sample" or rip from CD. Then my uncle gave me an old Harmon Cardon stereo stuner amp and some kenwood speakers.... MONITORS!!! Since then I have gone to audio engineering school and been mentored by my personal sound design hero - Dane Davis - and worked on crazy stuff with "Top O The Line" gear. And I felt like I had made much more interesting music prior to music school and my audio training.... I wanted to get my-self a small smei-modular - like the Mother 32 - which is reasonably priced sure - but my wife and I are BROKE. So I cant justify spending money on the Koma Elektronik Field Kit FX (which I have been drooling over for at least a year - or the stuff over at Bastle if I could afford it Id buy the soft pop, bit ranger AND the .... hell Id buy em all! The sad part is, its all pretty damn affordable - then my wife got laid off - so forget it. It was at this point I stumbled across your channel. I have a couple of old hand held mono tape recorders - the kind students or reports use - that I had collected a couple of years ago to dirty up the single on something - basically just a reamping technique - I came across you making drones with hand helds - and it sent me scurrying into some dusty boxes in the studio. THANK YOU. It was just what I needed. I started working with sound - when I was little - before I knew what it was - I would play with it. This really brought back a sense of PLAY and discovery.... which is SO important - not just as an artist but a person. And now I make music for the joy of it again - I mean - Im learning too - if that makes sense - too many years in the trenches - to many bands - shitting clubs and disappointments - you dig? But now Im just grateful! Thanks man! Cheers! Consider me a new life long fan. For the record I love your demeanor on camera. You have a very dry sense of humor - but its obvious that your are a warm and authentic person. Either that or you are a brilliant actor.n Thanks for the inspiration - its in short supply around here (my here, small town USA... but frankly the US in general is having a time of it... dont know if you've heard...). Cheers!
Joshua, thanks for writing, this made my day! I absolutely know what you mean with being in the trenches - I was for years part of struggling band, where we always saw some success but never enough make ends meet. Part of what I have become as artist was shaped by that experience - I never want to abide to the "industry standard" way of making things again, never go on stage and play the same music every night after night. So this is me at my most free. There is not that much difference from me on camera and real life - only here I am more focused and am able to edit out pronounciation errors. Seriously, trying to say "Thyme" and "Synthesizer" in the same sentence with "Thyme" does not come easy to a native german speaker. Anyway, all the best to you in the new year!
I really appreciate your approach to the bastl thyme. I feel similarly when working with the machine, that it is more of a collaboration and conversation than something which I dictate what it is to do.
Great video. My favourite new bit of gear this year is the Moog DFAM. Just so much fun.
8:10 makes me smile. You always seem so positive and kind in your videos which makes your content a pleasure to watch! Liebe aus Detroit Ü
A pleasure as always, Heinbach. I love my thyme and your probably the first person, besides myself, to give the Hermod any love. I use mine so much I’m surprised it doesn’t quit its job and move to Malta to “find itself”
Ahahahahah awesome description! For hermod felt like coming home, as I am used to the squarp workflow and the frequent upgrades Squarp puts out that fix any issues fast.
That AMA pedal is right up my alley. I’m a sucker for anything bitcrushed.
Yay! A list video!
Ha, it was both fun and weird to make.
@@Hainbach i really enjoyed the intro. That sudden realization that a top list might actually be a great way to help people, at least a little bit :)
Thank you! I am still new to all of this, you have much more experience. So feedback such as this gold! Looking forward to meeting up btw at the Reactor!
We can do a Top 10 Reactor video!
Ahahahahaha, at least about the beer and wine, famous region for both.
You might like the DFAM. I enjoy it's organic nature and versatility.
I have been eyeing that one, but the one that really peaked my interest ist subharmonicon.
@@Hainbach I am fighting to get the word out to Moog so they will make the Subharmonicon. I hope so!
I loved it when you said "CRUSHED"...
I loved both the Vermona Perfourmer and the Meris Ottobit this year, they are both amazing pieces of gear. I’ve only had the perfourmer for about 2 weeks but already having a lot of fun with it. The Ottobit is an incredibly versatile bitcrusher, filter and sequencer combo and it works well with a variety of different sounds and patterns. Neither are released this year but both have been really fun instruments to play.
Heard your Vermona track, super deep!
The Chase Bliss Thermae is by far the coolest piece of gear I discovered in 2018. Pitch shifting analog delay, and every parameter is controllable by midi, plus there’s a lot of cv options
Yeah, that is on my "gear I want" list.
If you get the Koma Field Kit FX, make sure to get shielded RCA cables for the reverb tank. They are not included with the expansion pack.
Thanks for your all your passionate and inspiring videos in 2018. I found your channel this year so I’m looking forward to seeing what you do in 2019. Have a good new year 🎉
Thanks a lot, Chris!
love the AMA! also I think I need a thyme...
Yeah, it would fit with your sound.
It would totally fit your style, I can never get enough of my Thyme, end of the day I routinely find myself just exploring its possibilities
Lol, these tapes, minidisc and walkmans remains me myself about 20 years ago! :) I'm coming back to tape again actually with a Luxman and a Polydict... :)
OMG these gadgets open MANY new worlds to me!!! Thank you soooo much!!!!
When I first discovered the Koma EFK FX, I was blown away. It really got all I could have dreamed of and more. Past time I would use a 4 channel mixerboard with external LFO, Delay, Chorus and Stereo Imaging pedals. It works no question about it! But it also ate a lot of space and did lack main sync.
The Bastl Thyme is on my list now. What a lovely device and you've shred lots of light and shown possibilities how to use and deconstruct that device :P
Thanks! :)
Thanks for all the great videos in 2018, I hope 2019 treats you well.
Id love to hear more about your creative use of midi effects on the Hermod, and in particular how you modulate them using CV, and generally keep them interesting.
Despite MidiFX being in most DAWs, I've seen little use of them outside scale quantisation, transposition and arps.
Thank you! Squarp has chance and random which you can adjust nicely. I might do a video on that, its what I play every day now anyway.
I want to have a Folktek Mescaline. Also those metal strips do sound really great! What gear did you use to make the track woven? Those are the most haunting bells of optimistic yet misty suspense I’ve ever heard!!!
Thank you! Woven was made with a marimba recording from an orchestral piece of mine, cut up on the Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus.
"Ever since Nick Hornby invented lists in the nineties (...)" LOL!
This is a good list. Not to expensive and a broad range of gear, presented as always in a sympathetic fashion.
Wow you have a Roland MSE1 string ensemble rack unit!!! I thought I am the only one in the whole world who has one 🙂😎🤔 I love mine, would love to see how you incorporate your rack into your setup...
Grey and pink with black and White details together always looks great in my book ;)
A step above most end of year year lists. I am happy as I just ordered a Field Kit fx with some Christmas money. I hope it will tie together some of my home made noisemakers.
Thank you, that is awesome to hear for me!
Lovely video! Was hoping you would release a top x of gear/instruments. Nice one
Thank you for a great year of learning and inspiration, cheers to many more!
I love when you explain your gear, it's so passionate. Great work!
It's hard to contain my excitement often - same as when I was into Dinosaurs as a kid, that part of me never changed.
im starting to enjoy every second of your videos ...thanks Hainbach .. keep on the good work ...
Great video! I’m going to be on the DFAM bandwagon for my favorite 2018 thing. Thinking about getting another.
It didn’t come out this year but I really think you should check out the noise! Eurorack module by reverse landfill. It’s an awesome module that makes loads of crazy experimental sounds and it’s currently my favourite module in my system. I would really love to see what you could make with it.
Ps. It’s super cheap!
Alfredobean I got that one too. It’s great!
Great video, really well edited!
Happy New Year Hainbach, keep on inspiring us! :)
Thank you! I work a lot on the editing now, glad it shows.
@@Hainbach It really does imo, keep it up!
I love your work, and a lot of the gear you explore has influenced my effects chains with the gear o already own and in Ableton. Thanks again for so much food for thought. Happy new year.
Thank you! Beautiful to hear that you are exploring, too.
When I head all that tape warmth, I had to subscribe.
those gamelan strips sound amazing! 😁
after looking at an fx station for months now, i’ve found things i’ve needed right here!
So, thank you for that and good luck with the rest of the videos!
It would be interesting if you had enough gear from a specific year in the past and do a, for example, best of 1968..or whatever year you think made great, useful and inspirational stuff. Loved the video as always! Thanks!
Best of 1964 would be awesome as well. The boys over at EMS we’re hard at work
Happy New Year and Merry Christmas...to do list...continue working on tape machine I told you about while being completely unsuccessful at making a cassette loop
Same to you!
Thanks Hainbach, I'm still really tempted by the Thyme!
Lorre-Mill Double Knot is great fun, worth checking out. Would likely work well with your Ciat-Lonbarde gear.
I tried it, but no funds at the time. Else it might have ended up in my setup
You briefly showed you midi synths in this video and I got me thinking: is there any possibility to get a video of your rackmount stuff? I've been really tumbling down that rabbit hole lately and I think it would be super awesome and helpful to get some insight from the ambient master himself! Cheers, love ya buddy!
Sure! Just need to get it all racked up again, re-building quiet a bit now.
You should do these every year :D
Thanks for going ahead with making this video. Subscribed for outstanding editing on interesting stuff.
I'm a bit late to the party but I'm curious to hear your opinions on the floor of desktop monosynths coming out from Behringer and others.
Mmh, I don't have any Behringers so I can't comment.
Cool nice List und ein guten start ins neue Jahr!
Danke dir Bruno! Dir auch auch!
Briliant video. Thanks for sharing! Come to Nashville, TN for "vacation" and we'll set up a show for ya! Could be a way to get around the performance visa 😀
Thanks for the offer! 😎
hello, was the live at 12:40 in paris by any chance? Thanks for your channel!
Wow!! All of them are really interesting for me!! I wanna have Field Kit FX specially. I wanna use it with my moog synth and guiter.
Hello, great video! Lists with our favourites of the year are maybe a bit silly but also a really fun thing to do. Can you maybe list the instruments you're showing? And also what is the mic input module you're using with the metal strips? Thnx!
Yeah, I will update the description later today! Strips are processed with the Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus.
@@Hainbach Great, thank you! I just saw your tutorial on the Cocoquantus. Amazing!
You made my face melt. I love you for it
great video as always! do the far most left and right tines on your Bellinger ekalimba also sound much lower in volume as the other ones? is there a way to adjust the piezo on the Bellinger? thank you Hainbach!
Haven't actually read the book but I love the movie and all the lists. He he
Keep it up Mr Hainbach, I love your videos!
Cool video, it's really personal choice, but feels very honest and organic. If you decide to make tutorial or tips and tricks about generative music.
Awesome videos Happy New Year!
Hi @HAINBACH! I enjoyed your video. Great to see your take on equipment this year. If possible could you review the make noise shared system b&g? I’m sure you would have some interesting results. I currently have one and it has taken me a while to learn.Alternatively the endorphins.es shuttle system would be cool to see you play. I’ve recently seen it as a small 200e buchla system as I now see its depth. Much thanks Z.
I would love to try both, but financially they are way out of my range. And I would probably disappear for months with them.
Whoa! What's the mic that you used to mic up the Gamelan Strips, that looks like a table lamp?
Sennheiser MD21
Do you own any Elektron products as well? The sequencer on the digitone is also a beautiful experimental machine to feed the modular :)
No, but I played the Digitakt and loved it!
@@Hainbach The digitakt is even better with more sequence tracks, I had it for a test but got the digitone instead because of the mesmerizing sounds it can produce.
Your disclaimer is the most German thing I have ever read, and I wrote my dissertation on Sturm und Drang.
Yeah, I can't deny it.
Its actually a completely natural and engrained behaviour in humans (to order and make lists of things) children often organise their toys in rows or by size, which is essentially the same thing.
Awesome little summary thank you!
Bastl Kastle 1.5 is fantastic
Hi buddy. New to the channel. Love your stuff. The ama reverb/bitcrusher has been on my radar for a while. Have you applied it on guitar? If so, how did you like the bitcrusher on it?
Not yet on guitar, sorry. But it does sound great on everything else I tried it with.
I need a top 10 list of best top 10 list of 2018 by Nick Hornby😜
The meta! The meta! Oh the meta!
Thanking you for reminding me about midi and gravity.
Thyme waits for no man of course
Hi Hainbach! Thank you so much for sharing. Your videos are helpful and informative. Out of curiosity, what resources do you use to find your gear? I don’t think I would have discovered the gamelan plates on my own.
Instagram is actually pretty great for discovering many things. But I am constantly on the lookout everywhere on the net for insteresting instruments.
@@Hainbach Thank you kindly! I will continue my process of discovery. Also, nice to see love for the Field Kit! It's a wonderful device.
You should get into film scores if you haven't yet! Beautiful pieces!
Thank you! My main job for the past decade is writing live theatre scores, with the occasional documentary movie, b2b or short film thrown in. Would love to do more film.
Would you consider making another for 2019 if you've scooped an adequate amount of gear for such video?
Sure! Though I was very much on a history trip this year, there was some new instruments I liked.
nice metal plates! Sounds a bit like a Gamelan to me. Sweet sounds. 👂👾
Lol...they are Gamelan plates...I just had to catch that part of your video. 😆
Need to get you over to Japan to play.
I might have something in the works for autumn, if all works out! Any support welcome, though.
A window, Some say the eyes. I say the ears.
Thanks for your passions shared.
Nice, totally out of the ordinary, keep being authentic!
Always a pleasure Sir.
Luv Yew Hainbach! L3ts do a remix eh?
I might have to purchase an AMA now...
how did u get new gear information?? any site??
What instrument is he using in his right hand around 1:56??
Excellent reviews 👌🏻✨
Do you have any experience retrofitting a mic on an mbra?
Can someone tell me who makes the wooden Eurorack setup that he’s using?
Ciat-Lonbarde.
Pronounce Thyme like “time”, Pyramid like “peeramid”, and Pristine like “pristeen”. No offence meant and I love the content, just a couple improvements. I am learning Dutch and find pronunciation issues often, so I try to “pay it forward” with my native language.
Thank you!
You are a Music Super Hero !
Hi Hainbach and good year !
i have a little question about the ekalimba. There are buzzers on it and have you to keep it ? Are they removable ?
also a little one about the gamelan strip. What have you paid for it ?
thanks for your work : )
The buzzers are part of the Charme, they make it sing. You can rip them off probably. 350 for the Gamelan strips.
ok thanks. It's nice it's been some yeas that i want a kalimba and a metallophone. Like the idea of gamelan strip like it's compact and sound very good. Have you figured out how to amplify them ?
Do you ever do live shows on the states?
I really want to, but artist visa costs are prohibitive, so I need a well paying gig or invite from an institution (Certificate of Excellence in the Arts). I am going to Winnipeg and Toronto in February though, which is at least the same continent :-)
@@Hainbach Winnipeg is doable. Hmmmmm
@@Hainbach I can see Toronto from here :]
...is it open to the public?
Gamelan is the metal notes or specific to amplified sound?
Pls
I couldn’t really hear the name of the first piece of gear. Super interested. What is it?
Koma Elektronic field kit fx
Great video. I just discovered your channel and love the creativity! One question -- are the graphics we see in your live set(s) starting at 12:28 generated by the music? What's the story there?
Thank you! Two different people on visuals - Orca, whom I regularly work with. She animates by hand and matches the visuals to my performance. Second was a collaboration with Damian Marhulets, who re-cut Nosferatu and made a Max patch, so he can play and have the music influence the video.
@@Hainbach Thanks for the reply! Does Damian use MIDI in the music to influence the visuals?
Audio only.
HAINBACH Hmm. So it responds to volume changes?
Volume and timbre
Hey. Sehr cooler Review. Ich wollte mal fragen, wie deine analogen Tapedecks heißen, die man ab und zu im Video sehen kann?
Nagra 4.2, III, Telefunken M15, Uher Report Monitor
@@Hainbach 🙏
Thanks I loved this video, I would love to see you live but I live Los Angeles
Some day....anyway I love your music and your RUclips channel
that kalimba is so beautiful sounding!
its too bad that the person's website is broken :c
You can get it at patch point in Berlin. Darrin is making them new again, he learned from Mr Bellinger
Is there a way to contact you for a very simple technical question? Love your videos, by the way you inspire me!
Yes! Reddit.com/r/Hainbach - I often get asked similar questions, so posting there helps not only you but others!
@@Hainbach Thanks so much
Unfortunately, in Indonesia you can't open/use Reddit
@@laurinavebriani2502 Really? That sucks.
@@Hainbach yup, I don't know why... maybe the government found some 'bad' stuff on other Reddit sites. As long as I can enjoy your videos on RUclips, I am a happy little camper. Keep them coming!
I love your latest album, one of my favs.
Take care,
Frank(singed in with my wife's account, didn't realize)
Noticed you had a fostex 4 track. I have recently got a full analog signal path going and I am interested in avoiding an ADC. I saw an old technics tape recorder with a peak detector for cheap at a shop. When I had the guy test it, it didn't sound good. Then I saw your video here and I can tell you have some experience -- I didn't see a specific video on this on your channel. So, do you have any advice for scoring a cheap, high quality audio cassette recorder (4[track or whatever), so I can do everything full analog? Is it better to have the 4-track, when only using cassette, or do you just use that for nostalgic character. I want something clean and accurate. Thanks, nice videos btw.
Cassette and clean don't go well together. I use a Telefunken M15 reel-to-reel to record, which sounds better to me than digital recording, because it adds depth and character. The four tracks cassette machines I use for pitching up and down or creating raw sounding loops. They are fun, but if its clean I was after I would not use them.
@@Hainbach Well I am not too into the idea of going reel-to-reel, because I would still have to get it on to a format. Obviously going to tape will characterize the sound. Some people want tape hiss, etc., which is fine. I was just interested in taking my full analog signal path and skipping an ADC. Is that just wishful thinking?
Then get a Marantz PMD 430 or Sony TCM-5 Pro MK2. Or Tascam 424 MK 1 for fourtrack. Sony is the most accurate of the bunch.
Great vid thank you!
more brizzle / brazzle, pls
I can't seem to find a link to the desktop compressor/filter "BOOM" - who makes it?
Boum by Oto Machines. I really should have used titles.
@@Hainbach Ah thank you so much! I was searching for "Automachine Boom" LOL. You could always add a short and sweet list in the video description.
Will do!
I really need to know what that device in the center is that you are using at 7:12. It looks really interesting, but i couldn't find it. It would be awesome if someone could help me :D
