Under a Funeral Moon has the best Black Metal vocals i have ever heard. And the tracks The Dance of Eternal Shadows, To Walk the Infernal Fields & Inn i de dype skogers favn are some of my favourite Black Metal songs ever too. Another thing i love about the album is how the drums hit the floor-tone, making almost this kind of thunder like sound
Panzerfaust is maybe Darkthrone's most primitive album and the vocals does not even sound rehearsed which gives it this really primitive charm to it. Personally i think i never could manage to pick a favourite Darkthrone album, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger and Panzerfaust are all top tier Balck Metal in my mind
To me it's hard to pin down the best Darkthrone album, but if I had to choose one I would pick Transilvanian Hunger. Maybe because it has a special meaning for me, as it was the first DT album I heard. The 13 year-old me was blown away. Just like with you, my anti-religious feelings which I had had for a while already, and music found each other. I had heard stuff like Dimmu Borgir before, which I really liked and still do, but I found the rough production on the early material appealing so I decided to dig in more. And so I went to youtube stumbled upon Darkthrone and then to Mayhem, Burzum etc.
I grew up on the first wave of Black Metal in the 80's with Venom, Mercyful Fate, early Sodom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, but I didn't really get into second wave until around 2006 when I picked up Satyricon's Now, Diabolical album. From there I went back and got earlier Satyricon and really liked it. Then I found Immortals' Sons of Northern Darkness, which I loved. So I got really into Immortal. Then I branched out and got Emperor, Thorns. I fell in love with Enslaved. And a couple years ago I got into Darkthrone and snatched up their entire discography. And for the most part their albums just kind of sat there. But lately my taste in music has gone completely back to the bands I that I fell in love with metal in the first place like Judas Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Dio, Mercyful Fate, Armored Saint, Grim Reaper, Raven, Venom, early Thrash. early Death metal etc. I kind of went back to those bands because as much as I love extreme metal, I was listening to so much of it, and I love it, but I was starting to realize that I wasn't having as much fun listening to metal as I did when I was a kid, and I really wanted to have fun listening to metal again. But I'll probably keep my Darkthrone albums, because I never know when my taste may change again and you get like $2 for used CD's here now. For me the problem with Darkthrone is that their discography is so huge that it's really so hard to digest all of it. And not all of it is of the quality of their early stuff. I have love/hate feelings for their Crust Punk years. Mostly hate towards Fenriz's vocals on those later albums. Is there an album where you stop listening to Darkthrone? Kind of curious as I've watched Razorfist's Darkthone discography review and he pretty much hates everything after Hate Them. I've been wondering what others think of their later Discography, and at what point it's good to stop with Darkthrone. Sorry for the long post.
Baltzeg thanks for the long post! Well, I kinda stopped digging after Dark Thrones and Black Flags. It went too punkish and old heavy for me to like it a lot. Then again Arctic Thunder sounded a lot better. I just don't have it myself, so never got to listen to it multiple times. I might do a Darkthrone discography review at some point because I'm so familiar with it. Just when I have time. There are so many opinion videos in queue.
I would say Marduk is my current favorite Black Metal band. I got their discography and there hasn't been an album I didn't like, despite all the line up changes.
While I can't have fully agree, I can mostly agree. Very strong discography and no bad albums, just some "not so good ones" in my opinion. Hence I don't have most of it (especially anymore).
Nice review Jerry. The best album of Darkthrone together with Transylvanian Hunger, a ravishing greatness that does not exist anymore. I hope you do review *Satanic Black Devotion* by Sargeist which is one of my top 3 Black Metal albums ever.
i remember as a young kid listened to that álbum 22 years ago and i was in love with the unique grimm funeral raw sound etc etc.… and yes, my favourite from them not because my first full álbum from them but the feeling it creates in me. Have the original and not digipack but it doesn't matter. They can be different among the other bands. Long live
Seeing live clips of the title track on RUclips, you have to be seriously great to wear a cape and look incredible, to match the music. I agree this album is probably the ultimate BM album in the way Reign in Blood was the ultimate TM album. If Dead hadn't died, then Mayhems first album would've been an equal to UAFM, possibly even better we will never know.
Fenriz is a metal GOD!!! EVERY record from Darkthrone is a must have! Even later Darkthrone, although changing their sound, is a must have! LOVE ALL THEIR RECORDS!!!
Rauta I agree! Early Darkthrone up to Ravishing Grimness is FUCKING untouchable! They are my favorite Norwegian Black Metal band along with early Enslaved, Immortal, etc; without a DOUBT!!!
@@RautaMetal A video where you discuss your disappointments would make for interesting listening/viewing. I agree there have been some crappy moments; Plaguewielder was pretty dull. Almost everything else is golden for me, though

Bifrost Agreed! That's the charm on Panzerfaust and maybe the vocals that have inspired my personal style the most.
I didn't know you made music yourself, even tho i have been a subscriber for a while now. Could you refer me to some of your work?
Bifrost Sure. I'll add the links later on.
good review again! Great album, but "a blaze in the northern sky" has always been my favourite darkthrone album.
DemonAdvance Thanks. It's great album, too, but not in my top 3 Darkthrone. Maybe the nr 4 though...

Lacrimae Mundi TH would be 2nd choice in DT. Roughly as good as UaFM, imo.
