This was my mom's life too. She did well in her O level results, but chose to go for a poly course instead of the JC-track so she could start working to support her family sooner. I’m Chinese too and I just turned 12, and I think Chinese parents tend to have these kinds of thoughts. I think it is important that you chase for your dreams and have a good childhood, because you’re only young once. It is important that you use your time well and have both relax time and working time. There is a scientific study that made out after a very long time(duration) of studying, it will eventually lose effect and bring complications. And knowledge doesn’t only come from textbooks, they come from all sorts of forms, from friends, family, to the news, these are the kind of valuable knowledge that you can only possibly get when you’re not studying. I hope you can tell your parents how you feel and make them understand that you need to have a childhood.

Father already thinks he is useless,, I think he has been pressuring his child because he think his daughter is their only hope to make life better, so when the daughter said she wants to work already, he was devastated thinking that working without graduating will shatter the hope he was holding on.. Still, he reacted the wrong way (many not so privileged Asian families thinks this way sadly)..

That’s not the takeaway message from the video at all. The message is written in plain text right there at the end. No child should have to sacrifice their future to save their family. The girl was put in a really tough spot. She can go to university and have a well paying career but she feels it would be selfish because she has her father and siblings to take care of. It’s great that she is so self*less* but no child should have to make that decision.
Dude, O-levels are a once in a lifetime exam. I don't know if you understand the gravity of the impact O-level exams have on your life, its understandable if you get bad grades for school exams, but getting bad grades for O-levels? Your career is fked up. If you fail Science its ok because most jobs do not look at Science. But if you fail any of the followings: English, Mandarin, and Math; your career is fked up, and I mean *fked up*. Fail all? Even worse, brother.

And the doctor has no idea what to do about it and my parents tried everything to make me smile for the last time
And when I graduate I left my parents house but I have lots of siblings to take care of them
And I started to make my own life and I got my emotions back
I don't even not what happened to me but i lost all my emotions too i just smile without anything inside me i am not myself i am confused i just became a stone that can think i don't have any idea how i am supposed to act or how i am gonna be my self again pls any solution for this

the translations missed something important, in the ccs, when the father says "do you want to be useless like me" in chinese he was saying "do you want to end up like me? someone who didn't go to school and ended up like this?" and when he said she was a failure in chinese he was saying "she can't even study" he was more angry about her wanting to get a job for her family over her own education, not her grades. he wants her to be educated so she herself could become more successful. that's the thing with many asian parents. they believe that education is a rite to passage for a successful life. this mentality is not only due to culture but also history. we should learn about and understand these differences and not judge these parents' decisions out right.
