      Don't think this would fix things for you. If you find the revs are dropping too low, the simplest solution is just to change gears quicker.
      When you're going first to second, there's often a large rev drop to do ~2k if you've waited until 20mph after pulling out of a junction. You're probably finding the car lurches forwards as you wait for the engine to slow down to match speeds

      @@ramind10001 That doesn't make any sense.
      That's like saying cars where you start the engine with a button is not a real starter like the ones from 1930 where you had to manual crank the engine to start the car.
      Rowing through many gears in a manual transmission is primitive and useless. You don't get better performance or better fuel economy. You don't even get better driving skills since an automatic driver will have more time with both hands on the steering wheel and will not have to worry about gears when pulling emergency maneuvers, while a manual driver will be susceptible to this.
      And yes, I actually do drive manual transmission cars, even have a license and tested with a manual transmission truck with a trailer. Manual transmissions are ancient junk.

    Minor point, but I noticed how the camera for the pedals on the Vauxhall was more to the side than on the Seat, which was from above (presumably due to the interiors of each car). Even though pedal cams are usually from above, I actually find this side view better as I can see more clearly whether and by how much you are pressing down each pedal.

  • @averyalexander2303
    @averyalexander2303 3 года назад +16

    That's a great tip! On my car I don't need to use this method on upshifts because the RPMs fall slow enough that I can upshift smoothly just by timing when I let the clutch out so it engages right as the RPM drops to where it needs to be in the next gear like your diesel Fiat. Took a bit of practice but the feeling of getting the rev match perfect and feeling nothing when the clutch engages is so satisfying. I can definitely see how this method could be quite useful on cars where the RPM drops quickly

    i think upshift blip is only necessary if u take too much time or longer for a gear change. if u shifting the gear quickly then the revs will remain a lil bit more or less or still be the same( as u push the clutch down) for the next gear. but if ur revs really drops too much like almost idle then u need to blip the throttle so that the revs get match of the engine speed and ur road speed and results into a smoother gear change.and u if u gonna skip couple of gears then its best to wait longer before shifting so that the revs drop a lil bit more so in this situation u certainly no need for bliping.am i ryt richard??

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 года назад +1

      It is right but all cars are different, the revs drop very quickly in cars with light weight flywheels, my VX220 needed a blip and my MX5 ND2 also benefits from either holding the gas a bit or blipping it as you have to change gear very quickly to finish before the revs are very low. In fact, the ecu does it automatically when changing up at high rpm.

    in my manual 125i, even if the revs are in the right place (or above for where 2nd gear should be), it’s always a bit jerky unless you stay on the bite point for eons. first to second is much smoother if i keep on the throttle just a little bit just before i raise the clutch to engage second gear and keep it there (or add a bit more) until the clutch is fully out.
    i don’t blip like in this video because i tend to rev it out more and i know even if my revs are correct it’s not super smooth without any throttle.
    this changes if i’m going downhill though - i don’t have to use any throttle to make the first to second shift smooth

  • @huiwang281
    @huiwang281 5 дней назад

    On Mazda3 manual, it seems to have a rev hang feature when shifting from gear 1 to 2. If this is the case, I should not blip the throttle for upshift since otherwise it will cause the even bigger mismatch between engine rpm and car speed . Am I right? This may work if it takes longer for me to shift gear (eg accidentally change to a wrong gear first and then correct the shifter position to the right gear without releasing the clutch pedal). Then blipping throttle may help upshift since rpm drops to the idle within this time range.

I have no idea why but blip doesn’t make sense when clutch is down. And this is pretty inconvenient. I can only push accelerator and hold it there so revs goes up BUT too high. So I just can’t do it properly with Polo. Strange behavior of electronic I think. So I just get used to make gear shifts really quick and in that way I don’t need that blip. But anyway sometime especially when I want to change gear down this problem is still here. I can’t make blip. And everyone downshifting I should keep clutch pedal like during the start on the 1st gear. Strange polo🤷‍♂️

    When I drove a manual, my goal on any gear change was to match the revs as closely as possible so as to minimize the amount of work the clutch did. Using the bite point to bring the car up to a speed where the clutch can be fully released is necessary when launching from a stop, or a speed too low for first gear. It is not necessary on any gear change.

    Hey Richard, I’m driving Mazda2.. lol
    Just 2 questions:
    1- in the end you mentioned about the issue for new cars like mazda2, did you mean for changing to up gears? So clutch down, choose a gear, then let clutch up a bit then add some gas? To avoid the rev flying?
    2-the other video of yours for rev matching for downshifting, advised to finish the tapping same-time finishing gear choosing- then let clutch up; however I saw another video “advance driving school” shows they do the tapping after putting gear stick to the lower gear, then let clutch up. Feels like that is easier to do, but I trust you more, what’s ur thoughts on this? - sure Mazda 2 can do the rev matching in your way? (Considering the flying rev issue)
    Thanks a lot

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 года назад +1

      It does depend on your car. In my Leon rev before changing gears is easier but in some cars where the revs drop quickly revving after changing gear is easier. The goal is to have the revs where they need to be before the clutch comes up. For rev matching up a gear you also want the revs before the clutch comes up.

    Haven’t finished watching the entire video yet, but.. Isn’t it easier (and faster to do) to learn the gaps between gears (gear ratios) and to come off (almost drop) the clutch when your engine speed has matched the gear speed without using the throttle blip? For example: I’m changing up from 2nd to 3rd, I’m at 3000 revs, and I know my revs will be around 2000 in 3rd gear . I’m know changing gear quickly and releasing the clutch just at the right moment, at 2000 revs (before the revs have fallen further.. otherwise you need to blip so it’s faster) I’ve been doing this for a while and it makes my shifts really quick and smooth. One downside, you need to be quicker and quicker with your gear stick and clutch the higher gears you’re in. 5th to 6th is a really small gap, (at 2000 revs only about 250-350 I believe) so you need to be lightning fast - and I am ;) - It’s amazing when you’re get all your shifts right from 2nd all the way to 6th. Edit: Watched it now, and you mentioned it. Great! I’m driving a VW Golf 6 with an 1.4TSI engine, I think pretty similar to your Seat’s. So it’s probably doable in your learner car as well.

    • @ConquerDriving

      There mk6 golf is actually completely different. The Leon I have is equivalent to the mk7 golf which has a very different chassis and different engine despite still being called a 1.4 TSI. I know in my car, the revs drop too quickly to catch with the clutch without a blip.

    How often do you perform this changing gears method in regular everyday driving? Just periodically or maybe pretty much all the time?

      In my case, I LL do almost all the time. I love the smooth way of driving like that. Only 1rst to 3rd gear.

      Depends on the car, but most of the time I use it. It happens very quick though, you barely hear the throttle blip as I do it very quickly to stop the revs dropping too much.

      Thanks both! Beginner driver here who is ready and whiling to teach and truly understand advanced techniques let's say. So in summary for better/faster and smoother acceleration in first 3 gears this can be pretty handy. Will try to practice it slowly! Seems fun and not that hard.

    • @MichaelFlatman
      @MichaelFlatman 4 года назад +2

      if the RPM is too low / you are using too much gas for that RPM then the car can shudder and jerk.. How soon you go up gears depends on how much power you want from the engine.. go up gears later when uphill (for more power).

    i notice at the end drive for the voxel when u were speeding up a little faster, ur clutch release was a little delayed right after the blip, could u explain that? i see 50/50 people on videos saying that you need to release clutch as soon as u blip the throttle, and some saying you dont need to, just dont make it too delayed.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 года назад +1

      I try to release the clutch after the blip as the revs are dropping. If I think I've given too many revs I may delay a bit to let them drop to were I need them.

    Great video, I find it very hard to match the revs in the mornings when I drive to work, seems like the RPMS always drop so fast when I upshift even all the way up to 5th gear which makes it hard to match revs when upshifting and especially from 1st to 2nd I will try out this method in the morning. When I come home in the afternoons the RPMS drop a lot slower and I can match the revs easier. 9:17 is the level I want to be at when I upshift, how the way I upshift is I let the clutch engage first before I add any gas. I want to start adding gas to my upshifts since it sounds so much better and faster but I want to avoid burning my clutch up when I give gas before the bite point. 14:34 This is exactly how my car is, you give a little gas and the RPMs start jumping to 2000 or over + a stage 1 exedy clutch made it very hard to learn on as a beginner. I have gotten better on keeping the RPMS below 2000 starting off in first gear, I rev it up over 2000 RPMs from time to time which makes me cringe but getting used to it.

      Sometimes the revs will drop more slowly when the engine is hot as the throttle cable gets more stiff with heat. I find that the case in my VX220.

      Or because when the engine is hot and the engine oil has reach operating temperature,it is much easier for the engine to rev up or down

    In all my cars upshifts were always smooth, because the revs don't drop faster than me shifting. Similarly in this video I watched closely his revs on the very first example and at the moment before he blipped the gas it showed 1500 and 1600 after the blip when he clutched up. What's even the point?? He could have just shifted to 2nd like normal and it would have been buttery smooth just as much. Blip on upshifts is a wasted effort. In a regular passenger car at least. Motorsports? Dunno. I'm familiar with rev matching, but upshifts don't generally need any throttle input. Not on my sports bike, not in my passenger cars. 🤷

    Does blipping the throttle like that have any impact to mileage? Loving the 32 MPG in my si, but I hate the rev hang. Dont wanna rush into ECU mods, but I dont want to sacrifice on the 10 or so gallons the car has.

    These are my current methods. Why they need to be performed are either the Engine characteristics cause the Revs to drop below the right rev range for the next gear, or you took too long to complete the shift such as when you get caught in the shifter gate and your timing is now off.
    If I am at Lower to Medium Revs (revs don't drop as much compared to when you are at high revs; where 1st to 2nd gear might have 2000 RPM drop when at high revs),
    - just release the clutch to the bite point and add a gentle amount of gas (6:36)
    I find this much more consistent and reliable than upshift throttle blip.
    If I am at higher revs, and say the revs dropped to idle for reasons mentioned above (messed up shifting, got caught in the shift gate, etc. )
    -Either double tap the gas , or do one big throttle tap to get the revs up,
    -wait for the revs to drop,
    - then peel off the clutch at medium speed before adding gas (watch video; changing up gears quickly and smoothly by dropping the clutch).

    I have the opposite issue, Rpm hang is too long (6MT M2) so when sou release the clutch rpm still too high (similar to a heavy fly wheel) it’s probably due to emissions, but very annoying, only smooth if I wait a bit longer to rpm to drop then release the clutch, it’s bad, particularly from 1st to 2nd.

  • @jameshogge
    @jameshogge 3 года назад +1

    For me, something like this is only necessary in 2nd-3rd:
    1st-2nd you can just shift quickly and catch the next gear when the revs match on their own
    2nd-3rd takes a little longer if you wait for the gearstick to move itself back to centre
    That said, modern cars with electronic throttles have a lot of lag for emissions reasons (they'll actually smooth your inputs intentionally) so this is really unnecessary with that throttle hang. The issue you run across is having to wait for the revs to drop

    Is it okay to blip the throttle BEFORE changing up a gear, then change up a gear, and as the revs start to gradually fall you effectively drop the clutch and get back on the gas. I’ve been doing this method for quite a while now but I don’t know if it’s good for your car or not.

      You only need to press the clutch when slowing down when your engine speed gets to around 1000rpm.

      I remember that's also how my dad taught me to drive a manual when I was a kid. But yeah, try your best to only step on the clutch when slowing down as close as you can get to a standstill without stalling. Avoid coasting in neutral or with the clutch pressed in. Just practice a lot and you'll find your own rhythm in driving.

    I do a different method for this purpose which is by any means worse on the clutch but easier to do. I ride the throttle a bit longer so when I step on the clutch it slips and the engine revs up allowing me more time until the revs drop too low. What is your opinion about this? Would this kill the clutch in long terms?

    That's great, but my car has a rev hang, so only way to perfectly switch a gear up is to do it slowly (not releasing clutch slow, but changing and releasing when revs go down to match gear speed), or to release the clutch slowly if you want to switch gear faster which is not good for clutch...
