Only just discovered you guys on youtube. This is such awesome content! Bringing it right back to the basics, clearly explaining the stuff I kinda know, but don't really know.
Best explanation of this channel! “Clearly explaining stuff I kinda know but don’t really know!” I totally agree- I know I have experienced the way to do these techniques in isolation and quite frankly by accident. Now I find by knowing the technique I can proactively strive for it and practice it.
Thanks guys, I'm 48 and just getting back into mountain biking after a ~17 year hiatus, and these videos help me understand that I'm not "too old to learn"
That point about focused vs peripheral vision is huge! It comes up in every part of riding. Your focused/central vision determines the strategy of your riding (eg. proactive, line choice, risk assessment) but your your peripheral vision determines the tactics of your riding (eg. reactive, line execution). Getting things from that conscious mode to become automatic is all about spending time on your bike. Good coaching, high discipline, etc can help avoid memorizing mistakes and that can help save some time, but in the end only time can build the necessary muscle memory to ride without thinking - and when it happens it is so awesome.
So true. And we don't realize how small that central vision region is. Try to read this while moving your eyes two inches to the left. Ha. But that fidelity comes at a cost in processing speed. The periphery is designed to identify threats and respond in real time. Pretty cool stuff.
You got me at 'Don't do it' to be honest. So few videos make this point so clearly when it comes to learning skills - I'm not ready and you told me how to tell I'm not ready. Thankyou, probably saved my face.
I’m 49 yrs old, played multiple sports and done all kinds of potentially dangerous outdoor activities (Mtn biking, rappelling, rock climbing, etc) and your advice about the zoom focus is spot on! First time I’ve heard anyone describe it (ever) - sage advice for anyone. One needs to be aware but NOT hyper focused on the obstacle or feature. Well done guys!!!
The two of you are a beautiful combo, and I 100% agree that the best coaches of anything are the ones that had to really work to gain their skills. So glad I found your channel.
The best part is how you guys always include mindfulness and doing something with complete purpose. As Alex said it's about finding the truths. That total clicks with me. Again you guys keep delivering exceptional content.
So happy to hear that it resonates. When you love bikes like we do the appreciation gets pretty deep and it's cool to know people are feeling the same things we are.
I'm new to this channel and just need to say that I love every video I've watched (a lot) and I wish you guys were still putting out regular content. I hope to see you back soon but if not, thanks for all your contributions!
Found your channel last week... massively inspired to try a new way of riding, i took my new pumpin' hinge with me to one of the world's first trail centres in Wales (Coed y Brenin) and scored 32 new PRs out of 36 segments on Strava. Thank you fellas, you're absolute legends in my world now. Namastoke indeed!
The funny thing is nobody hits it. We were joking that we could set out a picnic ON IT and nobody will care!!! It sorta cuts the turn a little tight too.
I've said it before, and I will say it again, the Chemistry and vibes between you too are amazing. Your videos are not only a joy of bike but a joy to watch too. I wish I had the opportunity to be trained irl by Lee. If you ever find your way to the north of Britain please let me know :-D
Consider remote coaching- I just bought a pack and although only 1 lesson in I carried what I learned into my next ride. It works- Lee is really good at making it meaningful for what you need in manageable bites.
It always strikes me how deeply human the wisdom is which isn't necessarily the one concerns riding the bike. It's almost more important for me than the technical knowledge itself. Two Buddhist Bikers! Cheers from Budapest/Hungary.
Every time I watch your videos I either realize or learn something new. And often it's not the specifics of technique ( it's all great stuff but usually things I know already) but rather the mental aspect of riding or even making progress / overcome an obstacle in life in general. In this video it's the "tunnel vision" thing. I was practicing bunny hops yesterday and was trying to go significantly higher. It wasn't happening. Until I examined my field of vision and noticed it was indeed tunnel-like. Then I did my best at softening my gaze, stay loose and boom - started clearing it! So looks like there may be two approaches to this tunnel vision phenomenon - if you can't make it go away, skip this obstacle this time. But if you can relax and widen the scope - go for it. As usual, apologies for a long ass comment. Who has time to read such essays in the age of Twitter... :-)
When you guys talked about using bike riding as a way to "express yourself" it really struck a chord with me. After about a decade off of bikes I realized that I had been missing the expression of riding in my life. Love the exploration and perspectives you guys put into these videos.
Soo good! Cant wait for my dirt jumper! Hit 50 this yr already been athletic now the fear is gone and having proper technique explained is going to send me sky high and loving life even more. Thx for stoke!
I love the way you guys explain everything. I'm 41, just bought the new Canyon stoic 4, and I'm just getting back into MTB after 20 years being off of the trails. I really appreciate your intelligence and way of thinking. Anytime I watch your videos you make me want to go and practice every little detail of my riding. Hopefully I'll get the courage to start doing some drops soon, they look like so much fun.
So I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. When I was younger and racing Mx I was at the point of doing and not really thinking and when I ride Mtb all I do is think. And mainly about how I’m really not in tune with the bike and constantly trying to learn what to do with the bike. My personality doesn’t come through at all. I’ve got no Mtb style. But with knowledge and desire comes change, thanks guys
Couldn't agree more. I know from riding motorcycles that target fixation is one of the greatest causes of accidents the don't involve other vehicles. I'm 39 and just getting back into MTB for the first time since I was a teenager and as soon as I notice I'm doing the target fixation thing, I have my motorcycle instincts to snap out of it as soon as I realise I'm doing it. But I take this as a warning that I'm pushing too fast.
This is great stuff Alex and Lee! I love the bonus "tunnel vision versus wide angle" piece. One of my local trails has an adjustable-height drop to practice on, and levels one and two are actually drops (level take off), but levels 3-5 go up at the take off and turn it into a jump, which always feels sketchy (and I see lots of people go off it in ways that look dangerous). This really helps.
I love how deep you guys take the mentality (or non-mentality) of riding. I don't even own a MTB yet, but it applies to a lot of the riding I do on my drop bar bike on and off-road.
Drops are complicated and the videos are good so this 4th video is so cool, shout out Lee as I learned today that is not a drop but a stepdown, that learning for my old brain works. Time now to grab the bike and practice again...
Love the overall attitude you and Mike bring. Super positive. I’ve been watching several jumping, drop, techy climb stuff and one thing clicks in my head now, and that’s been repeated in couple places, is staying centered front to rear. Fear, and understanding, happens in the head and finding the right idea is key. Then as you say, it’s about shutting thoughts down...once you repeat things enough. Progress! That’s all anyone could want. Thanks!
it is a joy to watch your vids... it doesnt matter how many times... I love the chem you guys have and the way you both address the mind and the tension and how to ease it... !
Good chemistry Great content, Easily digestable. At 39 Only got into mtb this year and you guys are really helping my learning curve, understandling the mechanics 👌👍
Great content, as always, especially the 'Zen' stuff. I should mention, too, that I dig the production of these vids. Makes them just that much more fun. Not that you needed that, or anything, just that it's fun... I like fun... I like fun MTBing... I like fun videos about intrinsically motivated MTB skill progression, with a Zen-like twist... It helps me have more fun, not just on the bike, but in life, too. That's next-next level sh*t.
Really appreciate the comment. We're still finding our legs in this whole RUclips world but that is exactly what riding is for me. Fun and progression with friends.
Awesome video! you guys are the only one's who seem to explain technique in a natural, understandable way. I was wondering could you do a video on Drop-offs that are on a downslope as well? IE drop-offs on a step downhill descent? Cheers
Great video, love the explanation and the discussion of how well learned & internalised process then turns into play & steez. I’m off out to practice 👍
Good content guys! Thanks! I almost got caught out by one of these darn drops with a lip a couple weeks ago, landed a bit nose heavy because I treated it like a normal drop.
I’m wondering right now, just how many coaches are out there watching this one...hmmmm...another full flex delivery, touching even upon the quantum experience of Flow State. Was just wondering when Y’all were going to pull this from the quiver 🤣 (you know, in the video) because ya know we were waiting, right!? Fa Reelz, great to see how this technique would be coached, fantastico ✊Great vid guys! From the Mountain Bike Capital of the world North West Arkansas, I’m even starting to believe it after getting a healthy dose of the next batch of 3 small mountains in a row, each with its own hub with multiple lines...not officially open...called Keystone. What we lack in pure elevation, we make up for in volume and diversity, honest to god, you can’t keep up with it...it’s truly unbelievable...you need to stay for a month or even a season, just to take it all in! Y’all are welcome anytime. Flow State Baby
I have small drop of about 3’ with a nice lip on it and I have been getting too much weight on the rear wheel and it does hang up. Not enough to launch me OTB but enough to cause concern. I will try it more as a jump. It is easy to see what is happening to the front wheel watching you guys hit it. Great video as usual and as many have said you guys just click when together. Thank you.
I love you guys! So much information and stoke! I’ve only recently discovered your channel but I know that you’ve made me a better rider. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Hey man you always give me lots of things to think about and apply, not just to my riding but to everything I do in life. I want to say the high-definition in color made it much easier to see the subtle beginnings and endings of movements and body weight shifting. Come to Bentonville for outerbike I'll Stand you a beer
makes a lot of sense with the "think" "don't think". when you look at creativity and spatial perception it mostly comes from the right brain in right handed people. Calculation, language and critical thinking come from left brain function. This is also why texting and driving is so dangerous as driving or riding uses a lot of spatial perception and the act of texting or in this case thinking(zooming) takes you into the left brain very quickly. Also why the more relaxed you are the better you perform the steazy moves. : ) Cool video as usual.
As I listened your the intro I immediately thought of Eugen Herrigel's Zen in the Art of Archery...and then you used it! It doesn't need to be all spiritual, but Bikes happen to be our (joyous!) "means" of...being in the moment. Continue to explore the fourth dimension of this wonderful pursuit which is both exquisitely pointless and everything. Your videos continue to break new ground...(and, as ever, superb editing)... Onwards and upwards Tim Voss (Brighton Pump Track South Australia)
Guru Alex! This video worked on sooo many levels. I can see the reflection of your experience and wisdom. From the gameshow to the archery (yeah you making some of us feel old since many didnt growup watching game shows😊😂). All culminating into useful mtb educational and inspiring content. Bravo sir! 😎👍🏾now i need to go practice what i learned.
@Joy of Bike with Alex Bogusky hahaha i was wondering if your thoughts on shifting your body weight changed because of your recent bunny hope video . I think my dates are off though lol. do you think you'll make a video on how to do a step up like getting on and over logs ?
@@bobstevemd3265 Lee is focused on teaching people safe ways to ride. I'm more open to different styles. In the case of a drop like this I might rock back a bit and hop it for fun but I don't think I would ever want to teach that.
I clicked the bell.. I got the notification ... it worked :) Then I'm rewarded with your amazing content and editing. Thank you once again for your videos Alex :)
I wear custom classes from Tom's Sportique Eyeware in Boulder, CO. - Full-coverage frames - Progressive lenses for aging eyes - Photochromic for all light levels - Vents cut into the lenses for less fogging - Color tinted to bring out trail details These are by far the best riding glasses I've ever worn. They're good in bright sun, dark, low and high speed. Heck, Alex and I rode supermoto one day, and I used these glasses in place of goggles. Tom creates glasses for a lot of my clients all over.
Awesome video. It's just not the content but the holistic approach to riding, because it's not really about riding but about overcoming obstacles and attaining a state of Flow. The riding then follows the Flow.
Perfect timing as always guys. There’s a couple of step downs I’ve had my eye on. 👍🏻 Love the late 60’s kitch music! 😁 Mr RUclips why do you have Rapha ads at the start and end of tech MTB videos?? 😆
As usual- so much in here to take to the trails: vision, moving skills from frontal cortex closer to brain stem, “no” and “full yes” as the only two good answers. Oh - and jumpy-drop-thingys. Going to go work with this after I measure my RAD. Y’all make my Thursdays with this stuff.
Ive lost an eye to cancer, im 42 years young this June and looking to get back shredding, id like your opinions please, ps absolutely love the show, 🤙✌️👌👏
Sorry to hear that brother but I'm stoked to hear you're getting back to the bike. Opinion on if you should do it? Heck yeah. There will be some adjustment and compromise and you will have lost some depth perception but you brain will figure it out. A friend of mine with one eye used to crush me at tennis.
Heck yeah Ross. Do it! Focus on safety. Take it slowly. Let your brain adapt. My friend Chris W has vision in only one eye and SHREDS on bikes and skis. Like, you would never know he has an issue.
Make that comeback, Ross! Just be aware that having only one eye will make it a bit harder to evaluate distances, but don’t let that stop you, life is too short.
Could you do more with foot position and pressure during row and anti row. You hit on what I am interested in @ 5:53. If you expand it to foot position, pressure, weight shift, belly button position and arm movement with snazzy arrows that would be great. I rewatch all you videos and try the techniques. At 57 I ride carefully to say that least. Your videos have me getting out there and refining my technique!

Insightful video.

Kind words like this make it a lot easier to shoot and edit next weeks episode. : )
This is, somehow, the FUNNIEST and most instructional mtb vid I’ve ever watched (and I’ve watched a few 100).
Thanks for this quality vid 👌👌👌

In this video it's the "tunnel vision" thing.
I was practicing bunny hops yesterday and was trying to go significantly higher. It wasn't happening.
Until I examined my field of vision and noticed it was indeed tunnel-like. Then I did my best at softening my gaze, stay loose and boom - started clearing it!
So looks like there may be two approaches to this tunnel vision phenomenon - if you can't make it go away, skip this obstacle this time.
But if you can relax and widen the scope - go for it.

Great stuff! One personal cue I use for the conscious vs. unconscious state of mind for drops: if I do a brake check on the run in, I’m not ready.
Good one.
Another great video. Anyone else sad for the 3 to 7 guys always thumbs downing this channel. They must need so serious hug’s.

Oh man. I can’t help but put myself into it and myself is 57!! Stoked you enjoyed it. More Zen in MTB and in all things!!
Only in MTBing can you yell “You’re out of your mind!” and have it be a high compliment.
I love this channel and its contents so much. I even would like to translate to Korean and share with my riding buddies.
Wonderful!!! Feel free to do that. You can download the content and repost it with Korean subtitles. I would do it if i only knew how.
lol I was gonna ask you guys to do an updated video on drops and here it is !
Hahaha. The others are only a few months old. What needed updating. : )
@@JoyOfBike ummm that lakes since. that's for reply mate
I clicked the bell.. I got the notification ... it worked :) Then I'm rewarded with your amazing content and editing. Thank you once again for your videos Alex :)
Love it when a plan comes together!!
Another very informative video here, love the instruction, thank you.
4:41 gave me the heebie jeebies of just how terrifying that drop would feel
Very entertaining Alex and Lee, keep up the good work! Awesome channel guys
What I've learned from these videos is that when you're crouched low and centered on the bike, you can pretty much do anything.
I was waiting for this video!!! Great effort, and well explained. Thank you! Makes sense
You are welcome!
It's about time i mentioned, are those oakley minutes Lee is rocking? Those are real retro shades!
I think they are. It's only retro if you bring them back. I think they're just old. : )
I wear custom classes from Tom's Sportique Eyeware in Boulder, CO.
- Full-coverage frames
- Progressive lenses for aging eyes
- Photochromic for all light levels
- Vents cut into the lenses for less fogging
- Color tinted to bring out trail details
These are by far the best riding glasses I've ever worn. They're good in bright sun, dark, low and high speed. Heck, Alex and I rode supermoto one day, and I used these glasses in place of goggles.
Tom creates glasses for a lot of my clients all over.
@@lee_likes_bikes Tom is the best!
came back to say I miss you guys alot
Miss you too!!! Hope you’re stoked.
Awesome video. It's just not the content but the holistic approach to riding, because it's not really about riding but about overcoming obstacles and attaining a state of Flow. The riding then follows the Flow.
You're so right. Ironically, making videos can be an obstacle to that goal but overcoming that obstacle is just like any other.
Thank you so much!!
Perfect timing as always guys. There’s a couple of step downs I’ve had my eye on. 👍🏻
Love the late 60’s kitch music! 😁
Mr RUclips why do you have Rapha ads at the start and end of tech MTB videos?? 😆
I didn't know. I wanted to make fake Rapha dirt jump gear. Like skinny jeans with two stripes on one leg and a black tee with the same. : )
@@JoyOfBike very funny!! 🤣🤣🤣
....and don’t forget the “Rapha 5’s” in a nice salmon pink, with matching socks, at the correct length obviously!! 🙄
😁👍🏻
Gereat tutorial guys, thanks ❤️
And another great chilled video that makes you nod your head and say yes ok I see that
So thanks guys keep it up I'm always learning 🤟
Appreciate you Mark!! Stay shreddy!
Love your commentary on style, total brain blast! 🧠💥
Thank you kindly
As usual- so much in here to take to the trails: vision, moving skills from frontal cortex closer to brain stem, “no” and “full yes” as the only two good answers. Oh - and jumpy-drop-thingys. Going to go work with this after I measure my RAD. Y’all make my Thursdays with this stuff.
I love Thursdays too. 'Cause I just loaded a vid and it is time to ride!!!
Love this and your channel. Thanks guys!
Great as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
@@lee_likes_bikes brilliant and thanks from the uk... 🇬🇧
@@JoyOfBike brilliant and thanks from the uk.. Keep the great content brother, you two have a great energy about you, bless🙏
Your videos have me getting out there and refining my technique!
love the energy of your vids guys, wish I could show that much skill in my vids.
quality content lads
Much appreciated!
True story what you say! Love it.
You guys rock! Love the content and delivery.
Thanks so much!
Great advice as always😉 Thankyou!🙏
Another great video. Thank you guys!
