That's not how it happened. The Japanese caught the South Dakota when she temporarily lost power. The South Dakota turned on her searchlights during the battle which drew the fire of the Japanese ships. While the Japanese ships concentrated on the South Dakota and damaged her badly, the Washington approached undetected until she got close enough and then illuminated the target with starshell and blasted the Kirishima at close range. The South Dakota lived to fight another day, the Kirishima did not.The Kirishima was so badly damaged, her own destroyers had to finish her off with torpedoes. The Washington chased off the japanese destroyers and torpedoes were fired at her but all missed. The South Dakota had to return to the states for repairs, the Japanese force had scored 42 hits on her. It is a testament to her builders that she could be repaired and put back in service after such an awful drubbing.

South Dakota only took one 14" shell hit. The rest of the hits were 5" and 6" shells which only caused damage to superstructure.

@@danzervos7606 SD's superstructure installations were gutted from the 6" shells, she wouldn't survive much longer without Washington. As for Kirishima, her own damage control practically scuttled her - holes from 16" shells allowed flooding _over_ the boiler rooms, this made the ship top heavy and the effort to counter flood only worsened the issue and had her rolling from one side to another.
As an interesting point, the holes from 16" shells were described as 2 meters in size by survivors.
The one scuttled by destroyers was Hiei, late in the morning.

According to a recent study, IJN Kirishima sustained at least 40 sixteen inch hits, many below the waterline. You just can't miss with radar directed gunfire at 10,000 yard range. Not to mention America's greatest gunfighter in the old West tradition, Vadm. Willis (Ching) Lee, USN.

    • @manilajohn0182
      @manilajohn0182 9 месяцев назад

Twenty- and not forty- is the generally accepted number, and that is by no means a certainty. A large number of 5" hits were also registered. The range was point blank- under 6,000 yards, and not 10,000.
Some of the supposed 16" hits on Kirishima devastated sections of the ship which numbers of her crew moved right through in the process of abandoning her a few hours later. Moreover, Kirishima was only armored against 14" gunfire- and forty 16" hits would have very likely completely wrecked the ship and caused it to sink quickly. Instead, Kirishima was scuttled three hours later- although it's clear that she would have eventually sunk.

It relies on damage estimation reports from one of Kirishima's officers who hardly had either the time or opportunity to conduct a detailed inspection of the damage inflicted by hits on his ship.
It's generally accepted- so far- that Kirishima took around 20 16" hits and a roughly equivalent number of 5" hits- which is a far cry from Lee's estimation of about nine 16" hits.

Much of her problem resulted from improper actions by the electricians who were ordered to set the electrical breakers improperly by the Chief Engineer. This permitted otherwise minor damage to disable the battleship's electrical system, knocking out power throughout the ship. She couldn't maneuver, shoot or even see the enemy with radar. IIRC South Dakota was also hit by 'friendly fire,' mainly because she left her position in the formation and was mistaken for an enemy target.

The Japanese refuse to admit they made a tragic mistake in starting a war with America. They refused to realize that America would build ten battleships to their three, one was converted into a carrier which the US sunk by submarine torpedoes. They built three new carriers, America built fifty, plus sixty new cruisers and three hundred destroyers and a thousand other ships. The Japanese (like the Germans) were told Americans were fat and lazy, but they turned out to be better soldiers then anyone could possibly imagine. Even today Japanese school children are not told the truth about the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Until Japan admits their deliberate attempt at world domination was just plain wrong, they will never be a great nation.

@@opvjg Yea, NO. The Washington could have caused some damage to Yamato or Musashi, but unless it just plain got lucky I highly doubt that it could have bested either one in a gun dual, especially at that range.
The Kirishima had hit the South Dakota in the Superstructure with AP rounds that went clean through and would have possibly caused much more damage if they would have hit the hull. The South Dakota was Armor Belted against 16 inch rounds and that would have helped, but if Kirashima could have kept lobbing in shells and could have done that with impunity then it could have sunk both battleships over time.
Also I think you are in error on Washington carrying super heavy 16" shells. I think that those were only fitted to the Iowa's and that caused a debate over the one 18" gun that they were testing as it was needed or worth the effort.

@@TwistedSisterHaratiofales but even if Yamato or Musashi was there and the IJN won and knocked off both South Dakota and Washington what would be the next step.
Everything after a Midway loss was a moot point. It was only worse after Battle of Santa Cruz despite the IJN sinking Hornet and damaging Enterprise. This took place in early Oct 1942.
The IJN scored a big victory at Savo Island in Aug 1942 but it didn’t really matter.
The battle had already shifted to the south. The IJN was no longer a threat to Hawaii and could no longer stay on the offensive.
One aspect of warfare that isn’t discussed much is how the US forces the initiative after Midway and took the battle down south.
Any last glimmer of hope for the IJN was to still focus on Midway and go all out and use their battleships and other surface ships. It was really their only chance.
Shokaku was repaired in July 1942 and Carrier Hiyo was completed the same month. 53 planes.
The IJN should have pulled out of the Aleutians and sent back Carriers Ryujo and Junyo.
Musashi was completed in August 1942.
Time was running out though. The IJN would have had to attack Midway in late July or early August. They could have tried without Musashi and just say if they lost Yamato they still have Musashi.
So now the IJN sends their surface ships out first. 5 battleships including Yamato shell Midway.
The battleship advantage is 11 vs 2-3.
Carrier strength and planes around even. It’s 2 main and 3 mid and 2 small for the IJN and it’s Enterprise, Hornet, and Saratoga and potentially Wasp for the Us plus Midway.
But at this point even they got Midway the second time they probably didn’t have enough left to attack Hawaii.
The IJN needed to get Midway the first time. They blew it.

On the other side of the coin, if they would have encountered multiple American BBs at once it could have been bad for them also.
Yes the Japanese should have invaded Midway whilst the CV battle was in play.
The Germans could have invaded England if they would have commited their capitol warships in a channel fight with subs and aircraft combined and shot across the channel.
It just would have been to large of an operation to keep secret, and most likely wouldn't have worked, but as stupid as that sounds, that would probably be their only shot.
We did take some bloody noses from both of them during the war but never big enough and with enough follow up to let them win the war after they didn't commit 100% from the first attack.

The title is misleading as it was not Kirishima VS South Dakota and Washington. Kondo had Kirishima, 2x heavy cruisers, 2x light cruisers and nine destroyers. Lee had 2x battleships and four destroyers. In the early phase of the battle, the US destroyers were heavily outnumbered and suffered severly. In the mid phase of the battle, Kirishima and several of the cruisers were engaged in target practice on the South Dakota - never in danger of losing the ship, but the SD took a lot of superficial damage. In the late phase of the battle, Washington approached in the darkness and devastated Kirishima, walking salvos of 16-inch shells up and down the older battleship, then slipping away into the night. Some have pointed out that this was a surprise attack and Kirishma would have been able more to defend herself if she had seen the threat coming, but the outcome of the battle would have been the same. Kirishima was out classed. Also, recall that the night before, Kirishma had appeared out of the darkness while Heie was taking a beating from heavy cruisers. In that case, it was Kirishima that dealt mortal blows in a surprise attack, so war is war and the fog of war works both ways.
