My 400 wil always be my favorite machine. It's what I learned to program on first. I was raised on welfare, we had nothing. I spent two years collecting soda bottles for the ten cent deposit to buy it used for $50 (a fortune for me at nine years old)
I would type in programs from antic magazine and learn programming from them. Saved on cassette they 'sometimes' were able to be re loaded .
When I later upgraded to the 800xl and a floppy drive I was so excited.
    Good memories, thanks for sharing.

betting its the rf modulator can, it probably has small electrolytics inside that have failed and noise is fed back out of it.

Isn't it weird that two N.O.S. Power supply's with the original capacitors just work fine. And all that recapping sometimes makes it worse. Sometimes the old caps are just fine. Especial when they used big caps.

Hmmm. The power board is just caps, diodes and the 2 regulators... Unless the RF modulator is leaking noise.

I know I don't think fixing them is out of the question. I had recapped one in the past without any noticeable change in noise. I plan on digging more into the noisiest one.

I didn't realize that Ultima III had colors on the Atari 8-bit NTSC. On the Pal version it's black and white (a bit like Lode Runner). As far the machine itself, the 800 is just beautiful but for practical purposes I prefer the 800XL (more RAM, builtin Basic which is slightly more enhanced compared to the original version)

Ultima III and Ultima IV use color artifacting much like the Apple II on the Atari 8-bit computers. Agree with you on the practicality of the 800xl...it's the all-round best Atari 8-bit in my opinion. It's the best combination of capability, build quality (much better than the XE's), and maintainability (most of the 800xl's I've worked on have had almost all chips socketed).
The Atari 800 though is iconic and really is a beast of a machine....

@@powerofvintage9442 it is a beast of a machine. I felt bad for your desk when it had THREE of them on it! 😉

I fitted my 800xl with s video and thought I screwed something up since the colors in Ultima III were different between the 800xl and the 320xe.
I have come to find out that is normal for the Atari 8bits. Guess they took Never The Same Color to heart... ☹️
So love the music over an Apple but ugh the colors...

@@timcross3461 Actually, you can adjust the color through a pot on the motherboard...just adjust to get to the Basic Prompt "Blue" and then with Ultima III and Ultima IV, you can invert the colors being used as well by pressing a specific keystroke on boot.

@@powerofvintage9442Yeah, I tried the pot and couldn't get them close. Good to know about the keystroke, I will have to find that and try it.

never had a computer that makes noise via the monitor screen, only the speaker can create noise.

Hah! Too true. In this case the “screen” is actually a large flat screen television (with speakers in it)
