The answer is yes. Francesco Aquillini is a world class meddler in Hockey Ops. He has been unwilling to do the rebuild that was necessary for a decade. Now we are likely to lose Bo Horvat, because of the Miller contract and the wingers added to support a three center attack (Petterson, Horvat, Miller).
Worse than that, there is nothing in the prospect pipeline and the Canucks have already dumped their 2nd and 5th round picks in the upcoming draft.
Not to mention Petterson is eligible for an extension next off season and im guessing he wont want to stay in this rut.
The answer is obvious, you trade Myers, Horvat, and Miller (if you can) and maybe even Demko, considering his current contract will be up before the Canucks are competitive. You hold retain salary and dump OEL in the off season. You play the backup goaltender 35 games and all of your young skaters (Podkolzin, Rathbone, Hoglander etc.) and you punt/tank on this season and next. Bedard yes, but their are 3 or 4 local BC kids besides him that are going in the top 10 of the next two drafts. Local, very marketable, young future stars!
Over that time rebuild the D core with the free cap space and assets from the above trades.
If they were to do this, they MIGHT be able to convince Petey and Hughes to stay long term.
But they wont do it, Mark my words.
"You can't get away with those cross checks in front of the net" is a very silly statement to make. The current bar for getting a penalty in front of the net is roughly the same as what it would take to get you legally charged with aggravated assault. (or just doing nothing but happening to be on the team that's up in the penalty balance and getting unlucky, but that's a separate issue)
@Average Canadian in 2022 This dude, who you gonna believe, some guy who works in the NHL or your lying eyes. 🤡
@Average Canadian in 2022 ah, I see, last year if you cross checked someone in front of the net you'd get a penalty, this year you don't. Your point is to ignore that, cause it's better than it was years ago. Once again you're a clown.
Yes, we are. If you look at the roster this is basically still Jim Benning's team
No, they're still underacheiving for their talent level
Sure Frank
This isn’t Bruce Boudreau’s fault. We saw how they played last season. Even then, I thought major changes needed to be made. Demko was stealing game after game. Now he isn’t and we see the glaring flaws in the lineup, particularly on D, but also how 80s run and gun the forward group is. And they have to be. That’s how they’re built. The only stupid thing Rutherford and Co have done is resign Miller and I’m sure there was pressure from ownership to do that deal. Those guys don’t want to do a rebuild and insisted on bad trades since 2013 to avoid one. Trevor Linden was right. And clearly, nobody was taking on Vancouver’s big contracts. They had to give up a 2nd to get rid of Dickinson’s contract. It would take at least a 1st to 86 any of the really big contracts and you can’t rebuild without draft picks.
I keep thinking the Canucks are similar to the jets very solid forward core stellar goal tending and awful defence we saw something similar to this with the jets I believe last year when Connor hellebuyck wasn’t stealing games for them we saw how awful the jets were defensively the same thing is happening with the Cannucks this season Demko isn’t stealing games and our defence is being exposed
Ownership needs to suck it up and pay for their mistakes. Buy out the contracts to relieve some pressure, even if there's a penalty on the cap clearing.
It's not you're right....but he's going to be the first one out though.... it's how the league works
Canuck fan here, Adam is absolutely right! Even if they felt they couldn't trade Miller, you at least resign Horvat and make moves to acquire D. Now we are looking at Horvat being priced out of the city and we lose him for nothing. Miller is a depreciating asset as Steve has noted, I do think he can be a valuable player but it won't be in Vancouver.
Every interview with JT Miller this past summer, he went on about wanting to be "harder to play against in my own end". He's all talk.
I was hoping for the love of god that they wouldn’t sign Miller…here we are. Disgusting. It’s so very bad. Power play reliant to score, and this pos is still on the top line. It’s so embarrassing that management thought “yes! This is the guy worth 8x8”
*healthy scratch! Yes, Steve! Couldn’t agree more!!
Ready to apologize?
I love that these Toronto guys care about Vancouver and just any team in general.
Good sarcasm
It wasn’t sarcasm. Look how pissed off they were at JT Miller’s play.
In contrast Geoff Molson have given Gorton and Hughes free reign as far as we know, certainly the early results have been there - not just on the ice but the development of new players.
Man, it hurt watching this as a new Canucks fan. But Steve said it perfectly. I wish I could back Milsy more, but I've been watching him and he has been abysmal in some of the games they've played.
It's an interesting theory about Miller but do you let the owner step in something that you can't undo? Managing the cap is going to be really tough this year and after the Miller signing, they're going to have to move on more than one player who they'd rather keep.
I've never seen a non-Canucks fan get so heated about J.T. Miller playing.
More people need to voice about this
What other Canucks fan is also a Lakers fan I can't be the only one out here in this pain
Im a Canucks and Clippers fan, where you been? You must be new here.
JT miller has 48.67% OZ start percentage according the the advanced stats on frozen tools.
I don't know enough to know if Patrick Allvin and Rutherford could have easily done more to fix the issue.
But just before Boudreau did well last year, doesn't mean that it's not his fault if they tank next year. That happens all the time. Players move away from the coach, etc.
In this case, I think Boudreau didn't bother to make any adjustments to the structure. He may have gotten them to play well last year but you have to make adjustments every year.
I think it's easier to fix the structure than the lineup. If we can see the structure fixed first, then I might blame management.
As a Canucks fan, thanks for this therapy session.
Steve is absolutely correct. Miller is a problem, get rid of him! In another video he said Tampa got rid of a good player who can score points. Red flag 🚩 Guy has to be a cancer in the room.
“You can’t get this group another coach!”
Steve is killing it!
Yes, when you pair up OEL and Tyler Myers.
The PK, defence, and surprisingly enough Demko are the problem. I don’t think this team is necessarily bad, and I do believe they’ll get better.
Demko is like hellebuyck when he’s not carrying the team all the defensive issues are exposed
"this guy knows what he's doing" Adam clearly paid no attention to what ruthaford did to that penguins roster from 2018 onward
one word comes to mind when i think about the canucks season so far. "yikes"
Mine is a phrase, "I give up"
You mean since 2011?
The criticism of JR is totally fair. Leaving aside feelings about Miller's deal, he did nothing to fix actual problems on the backend that are the root of all VAN's woes.
Steve: its not OooOOOoOOOOF.. its OooOOOoOOOOF-MARRON!
Nobody talks about how all Boeser does is follow the play and turn the puck over.
If the Aquilinis sell the team, who's going to buy them? BTW, at least the Leafs benefited from an awful Canucks team with the win yesterday.
That being said, the Canucks are in fact building up a Legacy of Failure of their own in this case, but if anything, the first step in launching a rebuild would be to face their inner mental blocks, before tackling it. Once the mental blocks are dealt with, they could proceed to create an identity of their own instead of ripping off another team's culture.
Miller hasn't been good defensively, but he's still far from the worse defensive forward in the league
Same start as last season for the Canucks even tho it's not pre season anymore they only had 1 pre season win out of what their last 12?
Which was only against an Arizona farm team.
I was watching the Canucks (A) group lose to all the other farm teams no McDavid no Leon Draisaitl like 2 or 3 players in there actual roster Canucks managed to blow it back to back yrs.
I predicted this b4 regular season just based off of their pre season performance %100 their effort level was embarrassing to watch its like no words can describe how bad they are and they bring the same effort level to the regular season it's not the coaches fault it's this group find a way to lose winnable games.
I stopped caring to watch this team atm only about the Bedard sweepstakes Canucks will move down to 5th overall cause that's just what happens when they are the bottom 3 or 2 worst team in the league they'll drop to 5#
If this ownership is smart, they will allow this team to suck then entire season, we will shoot for Bedard and buy out our heavy contracts on our blue line. If they want to retain revenue, Bedard will bring it everynight and clearing space in our locker room would pay for itself quickly.
Trade Miller contracts, Garland why not Demko Myers oel Pearson Boeser shake up the team sighed Horvat
I just watched the JT Miller give away...wow...he just gave up...
Jaromir Jagr is better defensively than Miller :D
Vancouver Canucks are in trouble
They need to address the problems the president and GM
Lack of Acquiring the right pieces in the offseason to help this teams defense follows on their shoulders not the coaches..JT Miller is killing this team now after signing his new contract .As he looks more like he wants to be traded
They weren't going to do everything they wanted to do in one off-season
That's the real problem.
@@SportsMuppets Not realistic to expect every single need or issue to be addressed in that short period of time. Stupid
Yes.
Adam's theory isn't the worst I've heard, it's not even that bad
Saying the Canucks have been bad for 10 years is rich coming from Toronto fan boy Adam....Atleast the Canucks have won a playoff round in 2019.
Lou Lamoriello IS 80!
Guy is right, Miller has been awful, and its hard to conclude that he isnt a main reason the canucks are so horrible. Got his payday, and is coasting and cherry picking the whole season, -9 so far, on pace for -40 season. I think paying him and leaving Bo hanging plus the whole team watching his lollygagging as the senior-most highest paid guy has completely cooked the culture and steeped it in toxicity. Acquas likely behind it but JR supposed to be the Prez to push back. Makes no sense JR would let Aqua ‘step in it’…and sign an 8 year albatross. Dump Miller to Az or Columbus for whatever you get, nothing if needed. Let Bruce out if he wants, or go with Yeo. NO to Trotz, dont need another bump pretending this team is better than it is. Trade everyone over 27.
imagine Rutherford micromanaging the team...imagine..lol he's an ass!
the blue jackets are worse and the ducks but none of you will talk about them
A Canadian show will talk about Canadian teams. They are going to talk about teams the fans of the show follow. It's not like Canadians gives 2 shits about Anaheim or Columbus.
Players can get it done , management can't. Keep asking the goal scorers to play defensively. Get a brain management. Look at the old Edmonton teams . The scorers were allowed to score , sure you could score six or seven times against the Oilers , but they would score eight or nine times against you . ( I still feel sorry for Grant Fuhr ) lol
Wow this sure aged poorly yep miller sucks ask Mcdavid how bad he is typical Toronto garbage consider the source has been following the leafs for so long as no idea what he is talking about
The Canucks haven't been bad for 10 years Adam
Yes
