Thank you to everyone who suggested using the Viggen in a dogfight, as mentioned in the video I have never done this before so it was my first time but even with that considered I had a really fun time with this thing I think I will grow to really like it over time. Thank you for your suggestions and a Big thank you to shotgun for flying the Harrier for us in this video.
MiG 23 vs F14
Time to hightail it out of here smokey.
The Viggen does not have that much of a thrust advantage, the Viggen has slightly more thrust in afterburner, the Harrier has less weight.
finally the viggen as i request to you. a almost impossible fight, but you use well vertical and energy vs tight turning. i wonder if a viggen can beat an a4
F-22 : "I can do the most disrespectful things humanity can imagine"
Harrier : "observe"

Su-57:"We"

Why does it do that?
The ground crew would like a word with you.

"if i found a rock on the ground, i am gonna throw it into his intake" i had the video paused for a good moment there to have a good laugh
Dude that was hilarious I really wish he could've found a rock hahahaha
😂
Yep, magical! Made my day!
If the game let you walk back to town after you parachute out, it could at least let you find a rock to throw at the Harrier. 🎯
Just remember, once you pick up that stone he's not violating the Geneva Convention by opening up on you with the 25mm.

Vanishing into the distance is an underrated skill. 🤣🖖🏽👍🏼
That Harrier wasn't taunting when it vtol'd in front of you walking away from your wreckage. The pilot was actually giving you a Forest Gump level wave and just wanted to make sure you saw him
@@electrolysisresearch8013 I could hear him make sure GS was alright now that he was out of that scary jet
Imagine you get shot down, the opposing pilot lands their V/STOL fighter next to you, gets out, pulls out a roll of duct-tape and 20 minutes later is giving a debrief on how they bought you back duct-taped to a pylon.

Hi Jenneaay!
@@electrolysisresearch8013 Exactly, no need to be that angry Mr. GS
"He did the harrier garbage"
GS: Oh no! Anyway
I've said this myself couple seconds before GS did it in the movie - somehow I'm now proud of myself :)
That “harrier garbage” was pretty sweet. I’d like to see a breakdown of that, maybe a tacview. Seemed like it put him in a good spot
he just threw nozzles forward
Harriers can’t do it in real life so I don’t know why it’s modeled in DCS but that’s what happens when you model movable thrust nozzles and don’t have any real airframe limitations in a game
@@v1_rotate638 it is absolutely doable in real life, it's called VIFF and it's a technique that was used even on the first harriers, and they were able to go to the full 98.5°
Are there any videos of it being done in real life?
"if i find a rock"..... Brilliant
GS did the Viggen dirty in that third round... the optimal way to fight in the Viggen is to run away XD
Sometimes you just gotta pick your battles
If they ever release the JA-37 variant that might change of course! :D
"He did the Harrier Garbage" 😋
Great! I absolutely loved this one 😂😂
@@wolfgangjr74 Shotgun won the round when he did the Harrier garbage tho
@@wolfgangjr74 the VIFF is used for staying on the tail of an enemy, not making him overshoot, that makes it a much safer maneuver to begin with
The hover taunt at the end of that genuinely made me cackle out loud. "look at this. Look at this!?" The indignation from GS was just priceless.
Harrier: flexes on downed pilot by hovering in front of him
Pilot: yeets rock
Ten years later: "... And that, kids, is how I claimed a kill on a modern fighter jet with a rock."
The AV-8B carries 500 pounds of water that is injected into the turbine's combustion chamber to lower temperatures which actually increases thrust to assist in vertical landing and take off. The entire 500 pounds is consumed in 90 seconds.
Interesting tidbit; thank you.
Oh god I can already see a rule 34 being made from this info
Does that mean the Harrier can't just put the nose straight up in the vertical?
"This... is The Fighter Pilot podcast."
@@terryritter7065 It's been two years since the Harrier episode came out, I've forgotten some of the details ;)
ED should implement the pilots pistol for this exact purpose so when a harrier is hovering to mock you, you can dome the pilot.
Yeah, but what a risk!! As soon as the pilot knew you were still deadly , he would open up his 30 mm gun on you!! You would have to hit him first go pretty much, or you would become mince and red mist! 😱
@@That_Freedom_Guy eh you dont even have to hit the pilot just get a round in the intake of a hovering harrier and that will screw up the hovering big time
not only the pistol but also the M4 in the apache cockpit
That would sound like battlefield alr 😂😂
@@larrysteve7272 Yeah maybe, the Harrier has only one engine inspite of its two intakes, so not a lot of redundancy there, I'm sure it's not designed to deal with pieces of lead pinging around the compressor.
However, nevertheless, even so, ... Are you going to play Russian roulette?
(I would need a new pair of pants if it was me!)
I'd love to be able to see the Harrier's POV especially for the first round.
Great video,I love those dogfights with these kind of jets.
I'd rather see the last round tbh
After the first round i can’t believe Shotgun was just hovering there 😂😜
I am so grateful for a channel that uploads so often, that I know for sure I can click the thumbs up button before the video starts. Thank you GS.

One of your best videos so far - especially the "realistic ending". Thanks for uploading consistently! :)
How realistic was it tho ^^? I guess in a cannon fight it would be. But the Viggen was a beast and pretty much the most advanced jet in Europe and one of the best in the world for nearly 10 years.
For real. I was expecting some well-thought out tactic exploiting a lesser known ability of the Viggen or a flaw of the Harrier.
Nope.
It's just GTFO.
@@aznmarty256 this ^
:D
It would be so nice to see a JA37 (fighter version) Viggen version in this game. That's a whole different beast.
Viggen has got to be one of the best looking fighters of the Cold War era.
cut the "one of".
one word: phantom
@@noodleman5464 viggen looks better imo
Nah. SU-27 and F-14 look better IMO
It looks neat, but for me it's not even the best looking Swedish fighter of the cold war.
That title is firmly in the hands of the Draken.
GS, I was waiting for the Harrier and Viggen to be in the dogfight videos and now you included them both? ARE YOU READING OUR MINDS? Great Stuff as usual man!
You should do more of the "light ground attack plane" dogfights, maybe use the L-39
Dude thats so cool! I used to work on Harriers in the Marines. Really cool to see them hover in person
1st round: Translated from Swedish " Dear Mr and Mrs Knut - the Swedish Department of Defence regrets to inform you that your son died because he was stupid!" Going one circle, slow, in a supersonic optimised aircraft, against a subsonic aircraft with thrust vectoring? The Viggen was one of the best jet fighters/interceptors produced in Europe in the last century. If Muhammad Ali was describing the Harrier pilots strategy, he would have called it " Rope a dope" - luring his opponent into a trap that neutralises his advantages. Using another Ali quote, by comparison to the Harrier, using boom and zoom tactics, the Viggen is so fast it could turn off a light switch, kill you, and be in bed and asleep before the room went dark! :-D PS: I really loved Shotgun effectively mooning you after that first victory, with the hover trick watching you walking on the ground after your parachute ride! :-D
Sure but this is the attacker variant of the viggen, different engine and avionics ;)
@@AttiliusRex That is true - they did build them in different versions for different roles. Even considering this, the Viggen, particularly towards the end of its use in the mid to late 2000s, had been steadily upgraded so that like the F/A-18, it could shift in an easy, plug and play manner. between fighter and attack roles. In fact, much of the JAS-39 avionics were developed and refined initially on the earlier Viggens,. The Swedes pioneered the use of programmed data cartridges loaded into onboard computers for missions so that all the info in terms of maps, mission planning and so on were at a pilot's fingertips, so that you could plug in, jump in and go. Which sounds archaic, and something we would take for granted today. At the time of their first going into service though, it was revolutionary. In the 70's and early 80's, when most aircraft were very analogue affairs, it was a very big deal to have a computer on board , particularly one that you didn't have to spend 45 minutes or more, loading all your relevant data into it manually, to make your life easier. As per Swedish doctrine, unlike most NATO aircraft that needed very long concrete runways, very specialised support equipment and very highly trained ground crews and engineers, the Viggen was optimised so that national service ground crews, could service them. They would typically be waiting at the sides of a road or highway in dispersal arming and refuelling stations. Viggens would then land in a distance of about 450 metres - ( 1,476.36 feet ), the ground crew, trained to act like a formula 1 pit crew, then got them ready to fight in a matter of about 10 minutes flat , where it would then take off in roughly 400 metres - (1,312.32 feet) from a road or highway! Trust me - it is an awe inspiring thing to watch for real! . However, even the 1972 initial attack version of the Viggen is still very very much a boom and zoom aircraft, when fighting air to air against a Harrier.
@@DanielCPhillips no, the AJS37 is a completly different platform than the JA37, different radars, different cockpit.
This is the AJS37 Viggen, an avionics upgrade for the early 1970 AJ37 Viggen, allowing it to carry more modern antuground weapons and also Aim9L.
Still it had a ground radar, and was a dedicated attacker, it could not be upgraded to a fighter.
However the JA37 is the Viggen you think about, the open software arcitecture and avionics was also used in the JAS 39.
JA37 had an extremly advanced air radar, fighter datalink, skyflash missiles and later AMRAMS
JA37 however had very limited antiground capability compared to the AJ and JAS39
Sweet....🤣
@@AttiliusRex and not to forget, it had another engine :)
The victory music at the end was hilarious. The presentation of that last sortie was one of the funnier things I've seen all week!
1:27
Harrier: Gonna show him a little trick I learned.
The four vapour trails coming off of the wings and canards is kinda sexy
As if the VIFF wasn't disrespectful enough, he had to hover as you walked away from your flaming lawn dart!
Shotgun is LEGEND!!!!!
Should have flipped the bird at the Harrier pilot
Crab landing at 9:25 gave me wood. Viggen was my second purchase after FC3. The cockpit sounds alone are worth the purchase price. Thank you!
At the end of the first fight I honestly thought, just for a moment, that your engine finally shelled out due to all those comp stalls. I’m not sure if that is modeled in DCS. But based on my 8 years of engineering experience in military engines, in real life that engine would probably have been trashed.
Some engines can handle it believe it or not. I was on the F-108 engines on KC-135s for 5 years. Comp stalled one once doing an engine run, scared the crap out of me. It's a big deal on those, lots of inspections to make sure you didnt mess anything up.
By contrast, the TF-33s on the Awacs' down the flightline... talking to their engine troops and crew chiefs, apparently they dont mind comp stalls at all. Comp stall them all day, at power, at sea level, no problem. Just pull back on the throttle a bit, let it stabilize, then ramp back up again.
I think it has partly to do with core size. The TF-33 had a small bypass, but huge core (since it was developed from a straight turbojet, the J-57 if I recall correctly). This means larger compressor and turbine blades that can probably take a lot of punishment. By contrast, my engine had a large bypass with a relatively small core. This means smaller blades, and less tolerance for punishment.
At least, thats my theory anyway. Point is, there are some older engines that take comp stalls like a champ. I think perhaps they were even designed that way. Early jet engines were prone to comp stalls because air control technology through the engine wasnt that good yet, so perhaps they were intentionally overbuilt to handle such stress.
That disrespect VTOL thing could just be him offering a ride back to base. Maybe.
Viggen and Draken was one of the coolest looking fighters of their time. The Draken was quite good in turn fight and the Viggen had some unique feature of its time like data link between aircrafts and thrust reversal. They were "very Swedish" (designed for their own needs), only the Draken had some export success (not too much though).
The gun pods looks interesting. As far as I know only the fighter variant had a 30mm Oerlikon - one of the strongest of its time - cannon built in (or rather under the fuselage in a conformal pod).
6:55 it really does sound like a giant vacuum in real life too. Also, who knew you could teabag your downed enemy in a jet!
F22 vs warbird? After that lightning match up it made me think, the f22 has a really tight turn circle, but so do warbirds… could be interesting..
I like how the engine bangs on the fuselage; "What are you doing up there?"
As a Viggen Main, i was waiting for this! Thanks!
The engine knows, it bangs on the aircraft to tell GS to eject since it knew that he will lose in a 1-circle.
Wow, talk about rubbing salt in your wounds..... That hovering and watching you walking was hilarious LOL!
The slow mo and zoom of shots hit makes the channel what it is! Fucking dope!
According to Viggen AJ37 pilots you should keep the Viggens AOA under 15 degrees to not compressor stall. During dog fight the pilot had a split eye tactics, one on AOA and one one enemy.
2:54
EPIC MAXIMUM DISRESPECT 😎
Harriers overheat if they go upside down for too long. The deed tanks for the water are gravity fed. Can fly backwards though :)
Just found this channel......this is soooo good!! Could watch dogfights 24/7 plus having only played Lock On cannot believe how its transformed into DCS .
Welcome to the channel man
2:54 Maybe he just wanna give you a ride! 😂
Harrier vs viggen. Audio from fight: "bang bang bang bang bang". Thats crazy that it is that pronounced.
The last round going all the way until he landed had me rolling.
Hi Growling ! Great vid, always fun and interesting to watch these videos !
Would you consider doing a Mirage vs F15 guns only dogfight video, it would be very interesting (knowing the M 2000 capability in one circle). It would also be intersting for you to switch sizes from time to time to see the aircraft capabilities against each other !
Thanks again for everythin ! Keep up the excellent work ;)
2:53 - That's peak disrespect and I just can't HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
Was kinda amazed when a Marine told me the harrier beats literally everything in a dog fight besides the A-10 and at times it will beat the A-10 depending on load out and position of bombs or drag differential on the A-10. But once the conversation started to really develop it became less about what might beat it and learning that everything runs from the harrier because that's it's only chance to survive that fight. Sad to see it being replaced rather than improved to be able to really VTOL like it was designed. They literally have to drop them from the sky when landing from a hover. Otherwise the jet likes to flip over and use the pilot as landing gear.
its the combination of basically not being able to stall, low IR signature engine and ability to lose speed extremely quickly (basically what Cobra does for supermaneuverable jets) combined with AiM9L /AiM9M that would make people hesitant to fight this thing at close range, without missiles its not that great but with those all aspect missiles its deadly threat just like the A-10 that despite its extremely slow speed is VERY dangerous in a dogfight with those missiles
I see you read my mind again. Yesterday I started looking for viggen vids haha
Lmao the heroic music while running away killed me. 😂
2:54 Now THAT is just some hilarious disrespect
LMAO "let me find a rock..." Blast! He's discovered our kryptonite... Lol😉 "FOD walks suck ass..." Every maintenance Marine ever😒
Nice fight as always! Hey I also have a suggestion for a video. F-16c viper guns only versus F-86. You will be surprised.
The viggen looks like what the ace pilot mercenary of a 80s movie villain would fly.
What is the title of the music? I'm old school A F that remembers the Viggen well and rather fondly, was unreal seeing it rise up from a tree lined hyway to chase you down.
Very impressed by the incredible details like the subtle crazing of the windscreen when the sun is right.
Thanks.
Yea, that's the stuff, Viggen is the fastest race car in the Europe, it's so fast it can actually get off the ground 😉😉 I know this is a dogfight oriented channel but if you want to show the true beauty of the Viggen you have to use its wolfpack tactics and time on target magic... that's his true element...
Ok
except this Viggen is the attacker AJ-37 variant not the JA-37 interceptor
The Viggen looks like something I made in Kerbal Space Program
Viggen: *misses*
Viggen: welp, i missed, good day to you sir
Viggen: *dips*
LOL The Harrier trying to chase the Viggen at the end was cute
"if I can find a rock on the ground..." OMFG funny
I was not expecting the ending, got a good laugh out of me.
Yeah, I was like " huh, I didn't realize GS was a comedian"
A real fight would look like this! Viggen flying low over the treetops avoiding enemy radar. Enemy passing above and gets shoot down.
I really wish Heatblur would have built on the work they've done on the AJS-37 and made a more or less separate JA-37 as well. Skyflash missiles and a conformal 30mm KCA along with the sidewinders would probably make for a fun plane in servers running cold war scenarios.
Also a bit fun how the AJS Viggen is carrying basically the same guns as older Harriers did.
The problem would be to make it accurate. The information for the AJS37 is available, it is not for the JA37
2:53 LMFAO! That is gold.
Lmao the 3rd fight was so hilarious i genuinely laughed
-Open fire before the merge

This might be the only time I've seen Growling run away from a fight.
this plane looks like something out of Thunderbirds. such a wild design
"... this is SO disrespectful.... if I could find a rock on the ground, I'd THROW it at him.... " LOL
Harrier sounds like a vaccum. In real live that thing is so loud it blows the shit out of your ears 😵
Lol that VTOL was cool 😂
Loved the last round with the Viggen swishing away from the merge; all that was missing was 25 RBT 70’s screaming up towards the Harrier rolling in for the pursuit!
This is the type of channel that I should make an automated like bot for, tired of always clicking like when opening your vids. I don't know how you manage to make so much content weekly with such beatiful thumbnails.
Glad you showed some love to the Viggen, the only fighter jet where taxiing backwards in reverse thrust is actually part of the the flight manual 😂
Nah, the Harrier can reverse it's thrust too. Not only can the Harrier taxi backwards, but it can fly backwards too. You can also use the nozzles pointed forward to land from an extremely steep dive in the Harrier, which is handy when you're over the VTOL landing weight and you want to hit the deck ASAP. 😉
@@will9357 right, forgot about the jump jet 🤣
3:13 I was going to comment "Just throw a rock into his engine" :D

I must say the widely spaced tracer fire from those Viggen cannons is an unusual effect. Never seen two streams of rounds so vividly before.
Wide enough to stand between them and they would pass either side of you ;)
Dude is trying to offer you a ride home 😂😂😂
Viggen?! Oh boy! Mr. Shotgun may want to employ some thrust vectoring.
I love the harrier hanging over you to claim it’s kill.
Brilliant show ponying by Shotgun. I thought he might drift over and try to knock you down with the exhaust fan just to rub it in LOL
Harrier: "sorry chap, looked like a nasty fall. Are you ok? Quite the bout we had. I say, what're you doing with that stone good sir? Wha- _O H G R E A T H E A V E N S_ "
Round 3 was definitely the most amazing dogfight ever! XD
IDK why, but the Viggen looks like the kind of fighter Count Dracula would fly if he flew a fighter.
