I enter flowers in our local County Fair every year. I entered my Bells of Ireland one year and used a Guinness can for vase. Judge loved it and I made it to best of class!
@@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 I would guess "yes" since all three of those are "cool" flowers. I'm also going to try this with Pansy because those germinate kinda sketchy. May even try it Tulsi Basil, where TWO germinated out of a whole tray.
6 years I've been trying to get these suckers to germinate. I viewed this last year at the end of the growing season. Too late to plant but I'm going to try to give this method a try. I've NEVER successfully gotten even one seed to germinate. Fingers crossed!
I was seed saving some Bell of Ireland while watching related videos....awe your cute little Gramps was in this video. So glad that you have video's with him .
I've done this technique with a lot of my seeds quite successfully. Before I had heat mats I put them on my baseboard heat. The only problem is my cat would grab the baggies and run off with them!
Thank you! My last (and first) attempt with bells successfully sprouted exactly one seed...which I killed about a week later. 🤦🏼♀️trying your method today!
Very helpful. Love this fast fact video format! I watch the regular ones at night with my husband but a three minute video during a busy day is perfect! Thank you so much!!!
I have chilled the seeds for a few weeks then soaked in water for 3 days then planted with okay germination so far. Going to try the Nicole Fast Fact tip next. Thanks
That’s basically how I’m germinating my poppies. But I do the fridge just overnight and then immediately put it on heat - by the end of the day they’ve sprouted. Next time experiment and try the fridge overnight and see if it works. Do, like, four seeds so you’re not wasting them obvi, but I feel like a Master Germinator now. 😏
I can’t help but say this, and it’s only a funny! But, my brain automatically thinks the seeds should be in a green case! Lol! Love the video. My neighbour is trying Bells of Ireland for the first time this year, so I sent the video to her. We try something new each year. This year mine is balsam.
I just love your videos! You're so much fun :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to share these with us! The other day I watched a video of yours that you had an associate suggest the vacuum method for planting seeds. I also came across another method that's called a paperchain pot system. You might like that one too!
Omg my bells are my pride and joy in my annual foundation planting along with flowering kale. I didnt want alot of bright flashy colors. My foundation planting consist of mandarin lights azaleas, then in front of that are baby gem boxwoods and planted in between and around are bells, flowering white kale and very pale yellow petunias
I love the fast facts :) I grew bells of Ireland last year for the first time not expecting much, and it grew really well!! I’m going to try this method for some this year. Happy Saturday! 😊
You cannot imagine how much this was needed. I just took mine out of the fridge today and put them under lights on my cool floor thinking they needed cool! So the heat mat is the key!!! Headed back down to get them on heat immediately! Thank you 😩😩😩😩😩
3 days and mine germinated in a food storing container. Lid is off and almost all came up. I'm glad I checked them a million times every day the package said 10 days to germinate!!! Vigilance is a virtue!
Thank you for all your videos. So simple and gives me confidence I too can grow them. I will be trying this year for my little personal cut flower garden.
Not sure if I should stop watching you or not. This video made me want to grow this one too. You have caused me to buy a shelf rack and so many flowers already, im still trying to figure out how to hide the new flowers from my husband as he notices that he can't mow lawn like he used to.
I cannot tell you how perfect your timing was! I had such horrible germination last fall direct sowing, but my customers LOVE them. I was considering biting the bullet and ordering plugs, but hopefully now I won't have to.
if you don't have a heat mat you can tape them to a sunny window, I did some periwinkle like this and it worked,,, update: i germinated my seeds with a paper towel just like you said and it worked they had roots in a few days!!! yaayyyy
I just threw seeds in the ground and waited. I thought they were bad seeds, but a year after I threw them they came up. Then they set seeds and come back every year in the same place like weeds. Prolific too! I’m not a flower farmer and know that you need to be sure you have blooms, but it works for me.
Thank you so much! I just bought some from Baker Creek two days ago. I thought about trying the Instant Pot on yogurt mode, but I’ll use your method instead.
Perfect timing seeing this. Mine have been in the fridge for 5 days. This is my first year growing them but I saw you suggest them on a different video :)
I scrolled through the comments as I had the same question. Here is her answer to another comment: The root will find its way. I just plop it in! I gently push it down but don't worry too much about the direction
I came here looking for this answer! I did this method last year and was unsure if i should bury the sprout or not! Turns out they are not fussy and do not mind being handled.
Love this method! When you transfer the germinated seeds to trays do you worry if the little sprout is pointing up, down, or sideways? This is where I overthink stuff. 😅
Thanks for the tip! I start my lupines with the paper towel/ baggie method, but wrap them in a bath towel and set in front of a floor register, they sprout in 3-5 days. Just did two baggies this morning. Saw this tip, so UN wrapped from towel and put them on the heat mat, this could speed things up! Thanks again for the videos, zone 4b-5a, Colorado.
Hey!!! Im still on my old FB account it's soo annoying plus my phone broke so it's at T moble being fixed lol. I have your sunflowers, cinnamon basil, zinnia, and baby's breath all in toddler stages!! I will be sending pics. Yess I do this to it makes things Soo much easier plus you don't even need any dirt!!
I enter flowers in our local County Fair every year. I entered my Bells of Ireland one year and used a Guinness can for vase. Judge loved it and I made it to best of class!
I had great germination on Bells of Ireland in winter sowing containers.
Essentially it's the same idea! I'm so happy that works!
I love this method! I also do it for sweet peas, delphiniums and strawflower!
Do you put them in the fridge also ?
Thanks
@@rnupnorthbrrrsm6123 I would guess "yes" since all three of those are "cool" flowers. I'm also going to try this with Pansy because those germinate kinda sketchy. May even try it Tulsi Basil, where TWO germinated out of a whole tray.
Great tip
next did you lay on surface or slightly bury seed? ❤
Just wanted to say that I appreciate the comedy included in your videos
Thank youuuuuuuu

They reseed themselves like crazy in the garden. I don’t do anything and they come back every year
I struggled germinating them, but then mine self seeded from the year before hehege.
I just did this and wow i was amazed.
Love the fast fact videos! Sometimes when I'm in a hurry to find some info these are great.
I've done this technique with a lot of my seeds quite successfully. Before I had heat mats I put them on my baseboard heat. The only problem is my cat would grab the baggies and run off with them!
Does this work with Rosemary and lavender too?
As a florist I loved working with these beauties!! So pretty and unusual
Love the wet paper towel idea. I've only put them in the frig. I will definitely give this a try. Plus those little roots are so cute!
Bells of Ireland...notoriously tricky indeed! THANK YOU for sharing your method!
Needed this after 2 unsuccessful tries already this season. Now I know what to do!
I have chilled the seeds for a few weeks then soaked in water for 3 days then planted with okay germination so far. Going to try the Nicole Fast Fact tip next. Thanks
You have given me the courage...... here I go, I'm starting Bells of Ireland.
Bells of Ireland FINALLY germinated in my winter sowing milk jug. I am on the SE coast of NC. They look so good!
Bells typically need at least a week of cold stratification, which is why I say at least a week but experimenting never hurts!
nice ..watching here outta Utica ..i'm about to try to plant these.. thanks for info
I just germinated BoI in my unheated cold frame with 2 YO seed. Zone 6B I've never done this before. Never have grown it before. I'm stoked!
You’re my kind of crazy! 😆 I also appreciated the pizza saver cameo appearance.
Wowza! After sooooooooooo many fails! Thank you!👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ok that is the best fast fact ever!! And I love seeing your grandfather face! Cutest man ever!
Good to know, will try it with delphiniums. 😊
Fascinating, thank you! Also, you crack me up 😆
Thank you for that tip! I have been unsuccessful with Bells and will try this technique.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! I want t to grow them so much, but I wasn't able to get the seeds to germinate last year.
You can do it!
LOL You're a trip! Don't ever change.
Watched this last year, happy I found it again today. Will start this now!
Thank you for this tip. I've never tried them because I thought they would be too difficult. Now I may give it a go!
Very interesting and helpful, Nicole.
Thanks, a huge help. Liked and Subbed!
Oh wow! Thank you for this great tip!

I’ve tried 2 flats with less than half germinating. Seeds are on their way to the fridge! 😊
Love you fast fact videos! Keep them coming!!😊

Cool!! And your marker (where to put the next seed) is hilarious and genius!!!! 🤣🤣🍕
Pizza table! LOL I use them a lot.
@@FlowerHillFarm they also work pretty good for keeping plastic wrap/foil from sticking to frosting etc👍🏼

Also, any suggestions on germinating “Butterfly Balls”?…aka:”Hairy” 🤣
A south facing sunny window sill works too. It was warm enough to germinate my poppies, and it had light to boot. :)
I call this method "Germinator" 🤣, it's always soooo sucessfull!
This is a top tip. I did this and they germinated just as you said!
Running to the kitchen and doing this right now!!!
I am trying winter sowing with bells of Ireland. That looks like a great idea 😊
Super helpful! I had done everything except putting the plastic bag on the heat mat!
Thank you Nicole - great info!! Just in time!! You are so knowledgable!!!
3 days and mine germinated in a food storing container. Lid is off and almost all came up. I'm glad I checked them a million times every day the package said 10 days to germinate!!! Vigilance is a virtue!
Thanks, girl!!
Thanks Nicole for the fast fact. This is the first time I've tried growing Bells of Ireland. I was struggling with the germination rate.
Oh my lucky charm that IS simple!
Holy Cow! Who knew!!!!
Thank you for all your videos. So simple and gives me confidence I too can grow them. I will be trying this year for my little personal cut flower garden.
I like your experience
Thank you! I had mine in the fridge for more than 4 weeks... Just placed them on the heatmat! I'll check them out tomorrow!!! ;)
Yes! It might take a couple days before you see a lot of them but you should within a few days for sure!
@@FlowerHillFarm so fun and so helpful and so fact!!!!
OMG, I am literally wearing the same t-shirt right now, LOL
I love these fast facts videos! I hope you’ll do a whole series of them! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
THANK YOU! Gonna get this going today. I have had a hard time getting them to germinate, excited to try this method!
Nicole, I'm definitely going to do this! Thanks for the great (and musical) information! ~Margie
Thanks! Enjoying these fast fact videos 😁
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! This was so helpful.
Thanks for this fast fact! I just found bells of Ireland in a store so I’m going to do this right now
Here in the south, I will have to directly sow! In fall! They don't like the heat of Florida

Thanks for the tip! I just threw mine in the fridge:) First time grower of Bells!
Fascinating! I will be trying out the plastic baggy method for my peppers
Just put in the fridge, thanks for the tip!
Thank You! 3 failed years with Bells of Ireland. Definitely trying
this this year!
Cool fast fact! Thanks!
I did the exact same thing last year except the heat mat. I was able to get 7 to germinate. This year non. Will try the heat mat.
Loving the fast facts! Thank you
I cannot tell you how perfect your timing was! I had such horrible germination last fall direct sowing, but my customers LOVE them. I was considering biting the bullet and ordering plugs, but hopefully now I won't have to.

Thanks so much, so informative. I am growing these for the first time this year. Looking forward to them popping up.
Thank you so much for this. Crappy germination two years in a row. Will do better next year😊
wish knew that trick long time ago , thanks for sharing
VERY helpful, thank you!🌱
Erin at Floret suggest to put in freezer for 14days or so as well.
Brilliant! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! I had no success with Bells before. Will definitely use this method in future!
Just used your method! I forgot I had seeds left. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I just bought some from Baker Creek two days ago. I thought about trying the Instant Pot on yogurt mode, but I’ll use your method instead.
AWESOME! Thank you. I had terrible germ on bells last year. Woohoo! Any bupleurum tips?
Perfect timing seeing this. Mine have been in the fridge for 5 days. This is my first year growing them but I saw you suggest them on a different video :)
Hi Nicole! Quick question; when you put the seeds in the tray, do you cover them with soil or not?
I scrolled through the comments as I had the same question. Here is her answer to another comment: The root will find its way. I just plop it in! I gently push it down but don't worry too much about the direction
I came here looking for this answer! I did this method last year and was unsure if i should bury the sprout or not! Turns out they are not fussy and do not mind being handled.
very smart seeding, greetings together
Love it
Love this method! When you transfer the germinated seeds to trays do you worry if the little sprout is pointing up, down, or sideways? This is where I overthink stuff. 😅

I wondered the same, but they are surface sow, so I gathered it didn’t matter 🤷♀️ good to know!
Thank you - I would overthink this too ☺️😂
This was exactly my question. Thank you!
This was my question too. Thank you for posting.
I’ve had so much trouble germinating grapes, I think I’ll try this method and see what happens!

Amazing, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
