I'm chugging along on One Piece currently on Vol. 5, and looking forward to reading more Stephen King this coming year. I will also be reading Cibola Burn in the Expanse series in January. Sounds like a great reading month. I might have to read Curse of the Mistwraith next month. I didn't have any intention of starting that series so soon, but it would be fun to be able to watch the discussion videos.
Merry Christmas John and Jakob! I am so excited you’re getting to Kingdoms of Death! That is my second favorite Ruocchio book, second only to Disquiet Gods! It’s different from the other books but I deeply love it. In January I plan to finish The Prince of Nothing trilogy by R Scott Bakker, but also start The Alchemy Wars series with Allen, and if I have time, maybe finally get to Michael R Fletcher!

Happy holidays John, Jakob, Ms. Minton and all! Wishing you a fabulous holiday season and a blessed 2025, with lots of great reads! Awesome Jan 2025 TBR! Buckle up for Curse of the Mistwraith - so excited you are beginning your WARS OF LIGHT AND SHADOW journey! What a ride you are in for, and had I known how glorious it would be when I began with that first book of Janny Wurts' iconic series, I would've savoured the trip through that very first book even more! The payoff, when one day you finish SONG OF THE MYSTERIES, when you look back where you began with CURSE, will be worth every page! Have fun, and all the best! Looking forward to hearing more about your own book's release in the upcoming year!!
@@Talking_Story OMG I am so so excited to read what I am sure will be a masterpiece by the Mintons! So so honoured to be receiving an ARC! It will take priority over everything when I get it! Thanks so much!! And I am grateful my books are on your TBR! Hope you enjoy them!
That is a stacked tbr there John. Props to you for getting through all of that in one month. I picked up a very nice hardcover copy of Curse of the Mistwraith, but as I've said before, I've resigned myself to probably not being able to tag along with the giant buddy read. Though maybe next summer, after the semester, I'll try and read it and be able to really absorb the story. I love looking at the cover and the map in there 🤣. January for me looks like the rest of the Faithful and The Fallen series from John Gwynne and Empire of Silence. Very excited to start my Sun Eater journey! Have a wonderful holiday with the whole family! You guys deserve it!
Congrats on 10 k! That is absolutely fantastic. I’m mood reading in 2025, but right now I’m reading Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz. It’s been a fun ride so far. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays John, Jakob and the Talking Story Family. 🎄❤
Epic list!! Looking forward to following along with your WOLAS read. So excited for your thoughts on Kingdoms of Death, one of the best Suneater books imo
WOLAS is my favourite series of all time - as it has been since I started reading it in 1993/4. The conclusion was fantastic. All I hoped it would be. You have an amazing journey ahead of you. Enjoy!
Very excited for your buddy read of Wars of Light and Shadow! I'm so happy this series and Janny have been getting some traction on booktube. This is one of my favorite series and I'm doing a reread along with Philip Chase & friends and I'm including the novellas this time. I hope you love it as much as I do!
Happy 10k and a Merry Christmas, to John and Jakob and their better halves, and to the fantastic Talking Story community. I bought Glorious Exploits in October and will add it to my January TBR. The US cover is nicer than the UK one. I want to commit to 4 books a month in 2025. so, the other 3 for me in January are: Senlin Ascends - Josiah Bancroft (I'm already 100 pages in), Red Rising (re-starting, I will get through it), A Death In The Family - Karl Ove Knausgaard.
I would not underestimate the density of The Curse of the Mistwraith and recommend to start asap to finish it in time. Even though less pages, it could easily take much more time than the latest Banderson Sanderson. Also,.. I started with Ships of Merior just yesterday. (;
Happy holidays!!! All I know it Thank Goodness my slump has ended….so excited for this buddy read!! Can’t wait for your thoughts on Kingdoms of Death ☠️ 🎄🤶🏻❄️✨
KINGDOMS OF DEATH!! The only thing I'm more excited for than you reading that is the glorious, legendary, star-studded WOLAS readalong 🙌 What a start to the year with this stacked TBR!
Thanks for this update. I just finished The Dragonbone Chair last night, want to get Dungeon Crawler Carl done before the end of the year and plan on getting through To Ride Hell's Chasm also. I have The Gallant and the first two books in The Wars of Light and Shadows lined up for next year. But also want to read the last two books in the Realm of the Elderlings as soon as possible. 💜
Can't thank the Misses enough for inviting me to buddy read Chain Gang All Stars with you guys. It will be my very first read of 2025 and I can't wait to read and discuss it. It's going to be lit!
Merry Christmas to the whole talking story family. 🎄 The first 2 months for me I reckon will be dedicated to the 3 stormlight books I have left before Wind and truth. Unfortunatly my order of that book got canceled (not by me) so hopefully I will get a copy early next year but I still have a few thousande pages to read so I'm not worried. After that I plan to get to Tchaikovsky's Dogs of war (will see when that happens as my writing course have started by then so who knows how much I will be able to read 😅)
@@Talking_Story Thank you! I'm sure it will. Finally I will be among writers within the same genre as I (I two wonderfull writing groups that I love dearly so I'm not talking bad about them, not at all! But I do miss having in those group to really nerd out with on Sci-fi/fantasy)
Kingdoms of Death 🙌 look forward to seeing how you feel about that one. As predicted I've started my January reads early so I'm already a good way into Gardens of the Moon but that means I'll be ready to start Curse of the Mistwraith straight away and then join in for my first Patreon read.
Merry 🎄 Christmas. Now I have to pick up DDC and Chain Gang! I first heard about those books about 6 months ago from Smitty1423 channel. You would love him. He talks about shedding thug tears (cracks me up) . Much love to you all ❤
Jeez this list is STACKED. I’m going to be giving Wars of Light and Shadow a try with you guys this month! Do we know when the first discussion will be?
Looks like an awesome month! I really want to hop into Wars of Light and Shadow too. But I kinda want to read To Ride Hell’s Chasm first. It’s sitting on my shelf, waiting. I’ve also noticed there’s a similarity with her series and mine. My first book is tentatively titled The Light That Pierces the Shadows… and there’s a reason for that! lol. But, I’m sure there’s actually plenty of differences!
I will be reading The Gallant while I travel for work at the beginning if the year. Been trying to find a first edition of Curse of the Mistwraith but no such luck yet. Hopefully I will be able to join in with everyone for that read.
I've been all around Philly and south Jersey this Christmas season, and it's all I see on the bathroom walls! People are starting to talk about it on the streets that Jakob is the best producer on booktube
Merry Christmas and happy reading to Jakob and John. My TBR for January is stacked as well. I’ll be reading The Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts (Wars of Light and Shadow book one) with Talking Story; Rise of the Ranger (The Echoes Saga book one) by Philip C. Quaintrell and Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Brady Hendrix with Mike’s Book Reviews; Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen book one) by Steven Erikson with The Brothers Gwynne; The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow, and Throne book one) by Tad Williams and Queen Amid Ashes (Sun Eater novella) by Christopher Ruocchio with Josh at Red Fury Books; The Lost Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle with Johan at Library of a Viking; TBD book of the month with 2ToRamble, and a couple palette cleansers between some of these monster reads. Whew!
@@Talking_Story yeah it is. It's also Petrik's book of the year. I still have to finish We Are The Dead, so we'll see if Kingdoms Of Death can hold the top spot.
2025 is gonna be an epic reading year. Conclusion to Sun Eater, conclusion to Empire of a Vampire series new Joe Abercrombie series, new Richard Swan series...and I am gonna try to deep dive (finally) into Malazan. Oh, and don't forget The Tainted Cup sequel too! Gonna be a great year! Merry Christmas!
Happy Holidays guys. My own January stack is pretty high already, so I guess I won't try and add anything new to it. First off, I'll have to finish my Earthsea Complete Collection by Ursula K. Le Guin. Already started with that, but there's no way I'll get it finished before the end of the year, so that will transfer over to 2025. As soon as I have, I'll most probably start Empire of Silence, because I want to catch up with that series before the release of the final part. Then we have the Talon Duology by Jen Williams, that I hope to get through in January as well. If there's still January left after that (which I hope will be the case), I also want to finally start with Stormlight Archive. I'm reading that one in German, and here the books are all split up into two parts, and because I found out that I stopped being good at binge reading, I can see myself reading only part 1 of Wind and Truth in January, keeping part 2 for February. Now I'm still under 200 pages/day (which is kinda my goal to go back to), so in a perfect world I'll be able to cram The Eye of the World into January as well. I want to do a reread of the Wheel of Time series, and as I've already read those books a few times (yeah, huge fan), this would be more of a comfort read to me. Have that series also in German, so this will be a pretty fast read, I guess. Oh, I forgot, I just got gifted Anthony Ryan's The Pariah, which I'm pretty excited about because Ryan's one of my most favorite authors, so maybe I'll put The Eye of the World on the Back Burner for a minute (unless I'm fast enough to squeeze that in as well). I also just found out that Michael Cronk from The Book Guy channel will release his urban fantasy series in January, so that just got added to the list as well. Which I guess will put me over the 200 pages mark That's it for January (and most probably, part of February :D). There are other series I want to start reading this year, including The Wars of Light and Shadow, Malazan and the complete Osten Ard cycle, and I also want to read some other indie stuff, but that's for the other months, and I haven't planned out exactly what I'll read after the books mentioned above yet.
@@Eluarelon holy cow what a list. You are starting the list off with some great ones. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all of it. I backed Cronk’s kickstarter so I am excited to get that trilogy in as well.
@@Talking_Story yeah , have been out of the loop for quite some years now. Was an avid reader up until around 2005, and then I pretty much stopped reading at all because of family related matters (and the burn-out that followed). I'm slowly getting back into the habit in recent years, but that also means that I have a lot of catching up to do, even with quite some classic series. Can be a bit overwhelming to decide what to choose between all the great stuff , but that's quite a beautiful problem to have, actually.
For my personal January reads, I will continue to read any of the voluminous…volumes of Sherlock Holmes books, Canon, pastiches and scholarly works, I have yet to read from my shelves of them.
Sounds like January will be a productive reading month for you guys...or should I say Janny-uary. I hope to have a good month myself when January hits me, though sadly I won't be able to partake in Janny-uary because I have other plans. Perhaps some day we'll have our reading goals aligned. Perhaps another buddy read is in order? Anyway, I won't keep this too long. Have a Merry Christmas guys!
Merry christmas gentlemen and scholars!! Also, you gotta be careful saying the best producer and it's written on bathroom walls - we're all going start proving this right
KINGDOMS OF DEATH AND CURSE OF THE MISTWRAITH?! Oh man, Kingdoms of Death is one of the best Suneater books- get ready, it was the first time any piece of media has ever made me cry. And Curse of the Mistwraith- IT IS SO AMAZING! Just you wait, you aren’t even close to ready and get your dictionary ready too. Wurts knows it by heart and isn’t afraid to make you look up a new word every page. I can’t wait to see your discussion because I will be reading Fugitive Prince while you guys do that. AND ONE PIECE?! Oh I can’t wait to see your thoughts, I love that series so much! I can’t wait to see your thoughts when you get to- I think it’s volume 9. You have an AMAZING month ahead of you! AND JAKE IS ON YOU’RE BUDDY READ TOO?! I’m gonna go text him congratulations! Holy crap that’s awesome. He’s going to love it. All of you will! GAH! I can’t wait to see what you guys think!
@@Talking_Story I hope so too and I think it will since I’m starting with Hobb, reading some Wurts, and a few more things I just haven’t worked out yet. I hope you get 5 stars on all your books! Edit: also your book
I personally thought that there was some ramping down in Doom’s Day Scenario but it was still great. I bought all 7 on Kindle and am reading them back to back as they feel like one massive book cut into many books. My interest has been piqued with the mist wraith book you talked about but I like to keep my genre reading as diverse as possible, going from one book to the next unless I’m binging series like Dungeon Crawler Carl 😂. So I won’t be picking it up for a little while but thanks for putting it on my radar.
@@wolfme4030 hey no worries. When we do our chats we will do non spoiler to start cap maybe you can have a lot of takes on it to know if it is for you.
Looking to start Words of Radiance. After that, continue Bound and the Broken and Sun Eater. Trying to get better at continuing series instead of starting new ones 😅
I’ll be starting with Upgrade by Blake Crouch since I’ll need a palate cleanser after Wind and Truth (about 130 pages left). Then I’ll be starting Sun Eater, which I’m extremely excited about! Probably will get to Empire of Silence and The Lesser Devil, as well as 11/22/63 by Stephen King!
@ I will be beginning hardback book 3 in February (I have all but one in original hardbacks) and hopefully continue on, but with so many other choices to read…🤷♂️
@ I will add the difficulty of finding time to both research a book and to then write it thrown into the mix….time management is a must! Oh, yes; AND watching a few BookTubers, as well!
Curse of the Mistwraith is on audio so I am committed to the first book only! Since I have all of Malazan on audio, that buddy read is in permanent ink! Derri’s love for DCC has made me give it another try but not sure when? So happy you will be reading Glorious Exploits, I also sent Andrew Wizard a copy, so maybe he can join you all!!

So happy Allen truly agreed to read it, that is a true Christmas miracle.

My January: Peace Talks-JimButcher, A Separate Peace-JohnKnowles, Rise of the Ranger-Phillip Quaintrell, and finishing some books I started this month like The Tainted Cup and The Scales of Balance
@@Talking_Storyrise of the ranger is great! He has hooked me in up to book 3. Becoming one of my favorite authors. There are nine of them in the echos saga. 4 in a pre quill series about the ranger and 2 more recent ones. All set in the land.
I would start with To Ride Hell's Chasm. It is a stand alone and you can see if you vibe with her before making a monster commitment into a 10 book series.
@swagiellarson Curse of the Mistwraith is a good place to start with Janny Wurts. It is where I started with her solo work. While it is book one of a long series, it is also the single book of the first arc of the series and therefore has its own ending. While there is so much more that comes after, and I would recommend continuing, there is also a satisfying conclusion to this first book that will allow you to stop, either indefinitely or for a while. It also gives you a good sense of how visceral and heartbreaking this series is. In this first book you have a smaller scale of reference and as the series continues, that widens to a bigger world picture. So you won’t be overwhelmed by the epic nature of the series in book one
I have Dark Age by Pierce Brown , Zodiac Academy by Caroline Peckham, Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan,Brandon Sanderson and Out of the Gate by Elsie Silver
I’ve been very slow in reading this year, but I do have some plans. The goal was to finish both darkness and light and exile before the new year but that’s not happening. I just can’t get into the series and I don’t even want to read it. I will push through and finish it. So I’ll have all of Cahill which I’m dreading. Licanius trilogy by James islington and then I’m starting Sun eater by our boy Christopher ruocchio
Nollaig shona dhuit! Now that I'm finished RotE (at least of whats currently out) I dunno what I wanna read yet but I think for now I need to do some standalones. I dunno yet. I'll probably decide and comment as I watch. Also, slainte 🍻
Did you reach out to Tori Morrow? She's an awesome booktuber and has read to Ride Hell's Chasm and is going to be starting Curse of the Mistwraith soon

Oh, and don't forget The Tainted Cup sequel too! Gonna be a great year! Merry Christmas!
All those and sooo many more are on my list! Gonna be a great year for sure!
Which I guess will put me over the 200 pages mark
That's it for January (and most probably, part of February :D). There are other series I want to start reading this year, including The Wars of Light and Shadow, Malazan and the complete Osten Ard cycle, and I also want to read some other indie stuff, but that's for the other months, and I haven't planned out exactly what I'll read after the books mentioned above yet.

I’ve never read Janny Wurts would this be a bad spot to start?
