Black Doves doesn't feel super 4 quadrant to me. Can you help me understand what about Black Doves (besides having the amazing Keira Knightley!) makes it attractive to Netflix?
BLACK DOVES was ordered to series in the UK in April of 2023 - before the writer's strike here in the US that ran from May 2023 until the end of September 2023, in an entirely different climate. The show is produced by Sister in the UK, which has a high profile and is responsible for such shows as CHERNOBYL and THIS IS GOING TO HURT. Bringing a star like Keira Knightly to this type of a show instantly expands its viewership, and anything spy often attracts a broader audience. It is fun and escapist, allowing the viewer to fully submerge in the show while viewing the content, making for great escapism. All that said, do keep in mind that anything that is released now via a streamer would have likely gone into production 1-2 years ago even in the best case scenario. Since April 2023, there have been a number of changes in leadership and organizational structure at Netflix; there is no telling whether a show like BLACK DOVES would have been ordered to series today, but I would suspect that with its star power, unique hook built around its protagonist and her specific circumstances and international appeal, it would have received some interest from buyers even today.
