This is the most useful video I've ever watched on RUclips. I thought I had to get a bunch of grow lights, which are expensive, which caused me to put off gardening. Last year I tried to grow from seed outside. First it was too cold, then it was too hot. Nothing would grow. I was excited to see this video and bought the Lowe's shelving unit and started collecting lights from Aug to Oct. I managed to get a fall garden in, which was productive till the first week of Feb. Thank you so much!!!

I've got the sticks/single bar kind. There's an advantage to those that they can be attached to a board, which itself can raise up and down. The lights are all chained together so the board is super useful in winter months for my houseplants that won't fit in the grow shelf. Just cover the board with thick tin foil (shiny side out) to mimic the reflective cover!

Working on the inspiration of your videos last year, we lit a 3' x 12' table with 3 sets of six 4-foot fixtures. 5000 lumen bulbs with 4000K light temperature. All are on timers. We grew all our starts; onions, tomatoes, peppers, and multi-sown cells of beets, cilantro, parsley, and chard. The fixtures we bought have opaque diffuser tubes. We also grow micro greens and keep basil plants under the lights. There is ample light to do starts and continued indoor growing. It is inexpensive to set up and power. Thank you!

I'm so glad I found your video! I bought these exact lights based off of a suggestion in a Facebook group, but later saw a different post claiming seedlings really need a fixture with one warm light and one cool light, and I started panicking thinking I bought the wrong thing. That is the exact same light I buy at Walmart for under $20 each. Mine are last 2 yrs model, so it does state the kelvin... you just have to look for it... I suppose the newer must say daylight, instead. I have 3, and I LOVE these lights. I connect a power strip with multiple outlets to a timer, set it, and forget it. For seed starting, I built 2 shelves using wire closet shelves I bought at a yard sale and concrete blocks to separate them. I hang lights off the shelves for the floor and bottom shelf levels. For the top shelf, I put sand in 2 gallon jugs and stuck 1x1 strips in each end and screwed a 1x1 strip across the top, from which I hang the top light. (I got that idea from Cali Kim.) All 3 are adjustable, or I can use each level for different size plants, the top shelf for the tallest plants which also get sunlight. It's an easy, cost efficient method that works great for me.

I bought the same lights at Sams and the S hook fell into that hole never to be seen again. I bent a short piece of 16 gauge galvanized steel wire into an S shape and used that, but I had to bend the S closed pretty hard to keep It from falling into the hole in the fixture

I’m really attached to my old-school florescent tubes! 😂 I have the 5500 Lumen version of the LED shop light you have in this video, and it’s fine…but I swear my seedlings prefer my T-8’s & 5’s. Going to test my theory this season. The staff at both Home Depot and Lowe’s suggested I buy back up florescent tubes now if I can, because they’re going to be obsolete soon and a limited supply kept in stock.

Excellent video on an important subject! Let me do some math and update the operating costs for you: ON for 16 hrs / day which is 0.72 kWH / day Ave Cost of power (2023) : $0.18 / kwH $0.129 / Day $0.91 / Wk $3.63 / Mo $47.3 /Yr
Thanks so much for the info. And 16 hours daily is the high maximum end. So realistically with an average of 12 hours a day, 4 months of indoor growing time light use, the yearly cost per light is much lower. Thanks for the great real-world info! You mentioned this are good for see starts and transplants, 6-12 weeks I think you mentioned. Specifically mentioned not for fruiting and flowering. (And lots of other reading 100% concurs with this.) My question is... Where do radishes fall in this situation? I've been trying to learn what I can online, but nothing really seems to quite pertain to radishes specifically. Would these be viable (without much/any tradeoff) for radishes all the way to harvest? They're so short lived, if my radishes are still growing at 6 weeks, I've messed something up. (Most varieties.) So the timeframe of 6-12 weeks would certainly be fine, but I also don't really know how "fruiting and flowering" relates to radishes or if it doesn't really relate since it is just root growth (essentially). If, even for radishes, these are not ideal for the last couple weeks of their lifecycle, how much less ideal would you estimate them to be? If the shop lights are 90%-95% as effective as the grow lights, it might not be worth worrying about it. If it is more severe, maybe it is. Sorry for the long post and lots of questions, but I've always enjoyed your videos, and I found you have several about radishes and also several about shop lights as grow lights... So you seemed like the ideal person to know, or at least have a well-informed educated guess, about this!
You can grow radishes indoors in trays. They dont get as large. I would not grow them for transplants. Direct seeding outdoors is best. But I would try french breakfast indoors if you want to try it. Radish are just root growth focused.
Happy Thanksgiving 🍗🥧🍎🍇🍺🌽🌿🍂 to you and yours Gary, & Thankyou to you & Kim for answering my questions in episode #5 .''Thankful' for your wonderful help with gardening & it's great to know there are people such as yourself in the world trying to make it a better place. After you recommended those lights a few years ago I bought them & very happy with them for seed starting especially for cold crop seedlings. Also have T-5's which I use primarily for warm crops because T-5's throw heat.
Happy Thanksgiving! I remember the question. Good tip on the T5s btw as the extra heat does make cool crops leggy. Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. Keyword search 'Black Friday' at my shop. Bought this light fixture months ago at Walmart per your advice and it worked well!! Thanks for the tip!!! Wanting to buy more but on Walmart’s site it they show this one is on sale for $18, found one but only 4000K, would this suffice is the lumens are 5000 (doesn’t say daylight). It’s on rollback - a 2pk for $21 originally $32 so obviously a lot cheaper.. probably because it’s not daylight, just wondered if the 100k made that much more of a difference
4000k will work, higher is better. It is a bit lower than daylight but very close. Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. Keyword search 'Black Friday' at my shop. Lots of sales are up. I had trouble finding these lights (you can find really expensive lights, easy, lol). And, I avoid buying from Amazon & Walmart for ethical reasons. So, if anyone out there like this, I found more options at Home Depot, Harbor Freight Tools, or seasonally-appearring lights in April-June (too late for that season, ironically)
The later stores work just as well. Good luck. Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. Keyword search 'Black Friday' at my shop. Lots of sales are up. Kim, I have to say, how on earth could you have ethical issues with Walmart and not Home Depot? Anyway, I came here looking for an alternative source too but I’d rather shop Amazon than Home Depot. To be honest, Home Depot’s “ethics” make Walmart look like they should be given a Nobel Peace Prize. Lol!

Hey Gary, I just looked at these yesterday at Walmart after watching your previous video. I'm pretty pretty sure I noticed it mentions the Kelvin amount on one of the long narrow edges of the box where all of the light's specification are located. I took particular notice of it as I was looking for the quantity range that you mentioned in your video. Hope this helps.

Hi are the lights in this replaceable? I see it reads “strip light” and wasn’t sure if that means it’s an actual bulb or just a strip of lights that once they go out you can no longer use it.

Do you recommend led lights like the one in this video with the led lights stuck to the actual shop light, or would you recommend a shop light fixture where you can install Fluorescent tubes? My thought process is it’s better to have the option to switch out the fluorescent, because once ghe LED goes out, you have to buy an entire new shop light fixture.
These work just fine. The tubes are good if you they arent to expensive. This is the cheapest package and should last quite a long time. Thanks for the video. I researched for a week trying to decide which kind of light to purchase to start my petunia seeds indoors. I've decided to purchase this light based off your great straightforward video. One question. How high should I have this light over my petunia seeds? Some say led lights should be 12 inches above seeds and fluorescent lights should be around 4-6 inches. What do you recommend the height be with this light. Thanks so much.
So I keep mine close as shop lights. Id start 2-4 inches. If there is an issue being too close, go with 4-6 inches. Anything pass that isnt giving the plants enough light. I like 1-2 inches for germination and I raise them after a week of growth. It will vary based on lights. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Another question. I bought the lights you recommended and also started some Zinnia seeds. I planted the Zinnia seeds last night and today they have sprouted. Is this normal for the seeds to sprout overnight like this? Thank you.

I just bought these yesterday thanks to your recommendation! one of the plastic tubes over the led light strip is off in each box. Do you leave those on or take them off?
I noticed that. If they arent clear I actually remove them. If they are clear... on or off doesnt really matter. www.therustedgarden.com/products/copy-of-one-quart-root-pouch-for-seed-starting-15-pack?_pos=1&_sid=f73b9016a&_ss=r

How often do the LED lights need replaced? At our old place, the compact fluorescent lights were replaced with LED lights. The maintenance guy said that the lights would last as much as ten years before they need to be replaced. But, they had to replace the outside light on the front porch twice whiled we were living there and we did not live there for 10 years. In our current place, the LED tube lights were replaced with LED ring lights. In the beginning, they were okay; but, not long after installation, I noticed that my son's bedroom and the bathroom lights started not going off all the way even with the switch turned off. Both lights still have a glow. So far, none of the other lights do this. If the LED shop lights did something like this, would that affect the usage cost or the longevity of the lights? I am thinking about trying something like this for next year if I can still get the garden bed that I used last year.

Hi Gary, I'm trying to decide where to move to have a homestead and I'm wondering what state you live in. I know southern states are supposed to be longer growing season but I'm trying to see if there are examples of people growing food successfully in more northern areas.

I'm gathering my supplies to start growing seeds inside this year for transplant. I have a question about lighting. I have shelves 2'by4' to hang the lights from. My lights are 5000 Lumen led shop lights. Should I use two lights for each shelf or just one.? Would using both give me too many Lumens
I just got my first set of this type of shop lights. They've upgraded to LEDs. The 5000 lumen model wasn't available, but the 7000 lumen model was, so that's what I bought. Before I buy more, is 7000 lumens going to be okay to use?
Yeah more the better. They wont have to be as close. And Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

Please address why are you using more than one led fixture? How many lumens minimum do the seedings need per square feet. I have read around 3000 per sq ft of growing space and I have 6 square feet on my 10 by 40 inch growing space. Thanks
I just use 2 for more coverage. These are long and thin verses square. I have grown with 3000 lumens, it works. But now days the LED fixtures are easily found at 5000 lumens per shop light. That is what I recommend. There are some example linked in my amazon shop. If your space is 10 inches wide, a single light is fine. I was searching for the LED lights at Walmart and found the one you mentioned as well as another for $14.00. I see they are 5500 lumens. I assume that's the rating for the whole fixture even though it has 2 lamps. The output of a T5 54W lamp is 5000 Lumens per bulb. So would you get more light from a 2 T5 bulb fixture than from the LED fixture? I know heat and operating cost is a factor but would more light be better?
Yeah that's the light from the whole fixture. The LED you describe is effective and costs less. I go with that nowadays. At 5500 lumens more isn't really better. You can raise them higher from the plants the more Lumens you get. Hi Gary, For the life of me I cannot find t8 5000LM daylight tubes with 6000k for my existing t8 flourescent fixtures. I know I have to retro fit them to work in my existing fixtures which is no problem. I can find 6000K but the lumen is 2500. Any suggestions?
So the cost of the new LEDS is $20 at Walmart. Lower energy consumption too. Are the tubes you are buying saving you a lot of money? I would try and go for full replacement. In the long run I think it is better. You can manage maybe with 2500 lumens staying an inch above the plant.
Very glad to help. These lights are great for transplants. Good luck this year

They work for sure. And are flexible in design.

Thank you!

Nice set up. I hope 2022 goes well!

I bought the same lights at Sams and the S hook fell into that hole never to be seen again. I bent a short piece of 16 gauge galvanized steel wire into an S shape and used that, but I had to bend the S closed pretty hard to keep
It from falling into the hole in the fixture
That works.

Interesting. I was attached to mine too. They do work for sure

I wonder if the small amount of heat from the fluorescent ballast helps?
Excellent video on an important subject!
Let me do some math and update the operating costs for you:
ON for 16 hrs / day which is 0.72 kWH / day
Ave Cost of power (2023) : $0.18 / kwH
$0.129 / Day
$0.91 / Wk
$3.63 / Mo
$47.3 /Yr
Thanks so much for the info. And 16 hours daily is the high maximum end. So realistically with an average of 12 hours a day, 4 months of indoor growing time light use, the yearly cost per light is much lower.

Good luck.

So the setup is 2 (4 strips) of the 4' lights per shelf, right?
I like that set up yes.

Well they say 10 years. These brand had a 5 year warranty if that helps

Hi Gary, I'm trying to decide where to move to have a homestead and I'm wondering what state you live in. I know southern states are supposed to be longer growing season but I'm trying to see if there are examples of people growing food successfully in more northern areas.

2 is always better and you cant over do it. You can get by with on per shelf. Mine have 2 but might be a little wider.

I just purchased a 4' Led light with 12000 dimmable lumens, Is that too much lumens?
They will be able to sit much higher over the plants. 12000 shouldn't be on a few inches above the seed starts.

I was told 1500 - 2000 lumens and 4500 - 6500k. So I bought 1800l and 6500k. Will those numbers be ok?
That is pretty low nowadays. 5000 lumens is what I recommend. Will it work at 1500 yes. Seeds sprout but they might be very leggy. I would keep the lights close and on for 14-16 hours.

Technically any light will grow your seedlings.. even standard incandescent bulb even..
The seeds will sprout....but then they will stop growing.
I tried this, with seedlings right near a south-facing window and I couldn't figure out why the growth just stopped.
I tried it again with better light, snd they grew.
Well you want them to thrive and be strong.

Good luck
