Wow there have been so so so many amazing comments on this video I have read every single one! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and insights it means so so much! 😭 You guys are the BEST
You should buy a home with a separate potential studio space on the lot. Like, turn a barn into your dream studio. It would make sense for you because when you have children, they can be close to you on the property🤍
As a 31 year old woman with my own shop, I relate so hard to your chat. I currently operate out of my basement, and I like it that way, but when I see other shop owners with big studios and warehouse spaces, there is a part of me that is envious. Then I have to remind myself that I don't want to have to be away from home all the time to accept deliveries, film, grab something I forgot, etc. A proper warehouse space has some amazing benefits, so there's that constant internal voice nagging at me, and it's sometimes hard to make it be quiet! I have to remind myself I want a small shop, not some big enterprise. I want to make a good living for myself and my family, but that's it. I want a relatively stress-free career, and expanding means more problems and worries. Sometimes smaller is better!
Oh my gosh thank you so so much for sharing your experience! I totally agree, I always imagined having a warehouse in my mind, and maybe one day I will get there, but Im at that age, where I need to start thinking about stress/personal life balance, theres no real rush to get there, rather than forcing a big push to expand, I want to slow down a little, and take some stress off get some joy back into creating, and everyones goals are so different, why get a huge studio.warehouse if it doesn't fulfil you and make you happy amirite?! Isn't that the reason we opened our own business to begin with eheh? xxxxx
I really commend you for asking yourself difficult questions, because it sounds like you want to live your life and not being tied down by work all the time. You are such a strong and amazing person! I totally support you simplifying your life - but I totally understand it’s much easier said than done. I feel like I’m also asking myself some of these questions, and I’ve taken a step back to think about stuff and it’s been quite liberating. I think no matter what you decide, you will still be successful because you’re doing what’s best for you, and I support that! 💕💕 And if you ever want to talk, you have a friend in me!
So glad to see you healing from surgery! I've had the same internal struggle this year about growing into a bigger studio. My husband and I ultimately decided to keep the business at home and spend the money I would have spent on rent and put it toward a bigger house. We're now taking steps to build a home in the country with a separate studio space for me. Not only will the business cover the extra mortgage but it'll be building equity for us. These small business struggles are so difficult to navigate when its on you to make those big decisions.
My dreeeeam would be a home in a country with a seperate buiding for a cafe and shop and studio that people could visit and even land for a katnipp campsite 😍omg I would love that hehehe
Simplifying and increasing your joy is such a great way to think about the studio - I don't think this is taking a step back at all if it's putting you closer to where you want your life to be.
If you feel you've got a lot of wasted space in your Studio, simplifying would likely be a good idea. As for the plushes and the book, I'd agree worry about plushes after kids, but i'd get knocking on that book. It would be a great project to work on, while the kids are growing.
As a person who has formerly owned a business and now does Etsy ;) growth in too many directions is unfulfilling and unsustainable. My two cents, refocus on 1) what you do best 2) whom you do it for and 3) why you do it. You are not scaling down but strengthening the core components of your business. In regards to your office space, whatever happened to the old empty corner book shop? I always felt that small cozy spaces were more your vibe. Also, request to see more Peggy this summer…thanx! ✌️
hi Cath, here speaking from a new mama who has a small illustration business like you. For myself I have a room in the house which I transferred into a studio. I found it very coinvent with having a child. what i suggest for you is maybe if you have a garden you can build a summer house/ a portacabin and make that your studio if you don't have a spare room. if more storage space is needed you can rent a small warehouse space. If i had a garden i would defiantly do that myself! good Luck Cathrine, and hope one day your dream of having lovely babies come very near xx
Hi love, I just found your channel 2 months ago and loving. I'm in my 40s, however, I struggled after having my first child at 28. Taking a step back at work eventually helped me move up in the end. Trust your gut on this. Sometimes in order to move forward, you may have take a step back. Watching you in Texas. ❤
Someone else mentioned in the comments having a personal home space that is used for storage. Like a spare room or shed of some kind. So you could downsize to a smaller studio and also have storage space at home for bigger products! Either way I am excited to follow your journey❤️
I run a full time art studio but it's within my own home - so the overhead of a large place isn't relevant to my experiences, BUT! One of the things over the last two years was realising that I had been stretching myself way too thin across everything that I wanted to do in work and personal life, having three different sides of my business that I was pushing. I've had a sleeve and the healing time caused me to really look deeply into the things that I personally enjoyed and what I wanted to illustrate. It took a while afterwards to finally make positive choices for myself and my business but over the last 7 months I had a major overhaul of literally everything in my studio, from the layout and furniture to decorations and window treatments, then decided what stock did I want to focus on and what did I enjoy illustrating. I completely nuked the business and in my mind started over from the ground up and have been met with happy customers and lots of new faces. If it doesn't fit in my space, I'm not creating it as I don't want to put extra shelving into the room, but there are other options available for larger items! For plushies, there are always the options of things like Kickstarter where you know roughly how many pieces you'll have to purchase for your backers and then order a few more to pop up on your website, but that way what is coming in is what is going right back out so you don't have to have tons of footage dedicated to stock you're stuck with. You already have your name, quality and reputation! Having kids and an office might be difficult, but with how hard you work you'll find your balance. Mines almost 16 now but you'll definitely find your groove. Cheering for you, watched your surgery video already and excited for the journey you're on. =) Body changes are happening and that dress is gorgeous!
I used to have a small sewing studio and then rented a larger one that was more expensive, a short walk from my apartment. Then we moved to a new apartment where I now have a reasonably large room that fits my needs perfectly. I now love this studio space and want to spend all of my time here. I took my time to make it beautiful and I’m so glad I did. It’s bright and organised and perfect for my little business. It’s so nice to have a studio space at home. I’m not saying you should move your studio home necessarily but maybe a smaller space could be a good idea. It takes a lot of energy worrying about rent and such. If there are no rooms available now there might be soon. I bet you are not the only one thinking about changing things up at the the moment 😇💕 Good luck! & hope your recovery goes well ☀️
I've been in business for over twenty years. My advice is to cut every cost you can, maximize your margins wherever you can, and do everything to make your life easier. Women often think when babies come that they'll be able to handle it all, but a baby changes everything. And some little ones need more care than others. You're wise to start planning for that now.
I second this! also, people are sometimes not prepared for how much you can change as well- sometimes with all the good intentions in the world it’s simply not possible to be as you were before children… they truely change you, for the better if you let them, but learning new ways to be flexible is a must and building that flexibility into your business is also a must to keep things running smoothly.
@@WendyDewarHughes Yes, it’s been a journey. I have three precious children, onset chronic illness during the pregnancies, and just trying to figure out how life will look when everything’s been flipped upside down. Took me a long time to find a path to balance as I had to grow and become a different person- the mother my children need, but still me who doesn’t loose sight of the dreams… my path is definitely not for everyone but I can say I’ve learnt valuable lessons along the way that I’m happy to share if it can help in any way.
Hello: as a mother of 2, I watch your channel and love to see the freedom you have to pursue your passion and travel. Children will change your life completely, to have children is to be completely selfless. Your business will change, your relationships will change, everything will change. Best wishes on your recovery 😉
As a mum and a business owner, some advice 🥰. Kids are great no matter when you have them and actually having your own business helps a great deal. I’ve watch you and your growth for some time now and to me this last year with you has been “to unsettling”. You’re not giving yourself time to really stop and reflect, to feel out the next steps like you once did. I loved your other room in that building and when you zoomed over to the room you are in now I was like wow that fast! I also cringed when you started talking about opening a cafe, I was like oh no don’t do it! Just focus on making a dream a year happen or at least every six months and that should help you figure out the direction. I still love everything your doing and I’m sure you will figure this out too.
I have always liked the term 'right-sizing' instead of downsizing. Downsizing seems regressive but right-sizing means finding the right balance - up or down. The other term I have found on youtube lately is - this season of life. I love it. This season of life I am at one place but I won't remain in that season forever. I have transitioned from one season to another. COVID has certainly set all of us to a strange season but as we try to go back to 'normal' we (I) need to remember that 2020 was a different season of my life. 2022 is a new season and I need to honor where I am today. I am sending you good wishes and heartfelt hope that you find your season and are able to right-size for that season. I also can only imagine how many wonderful stickers you will be able to create for babies and children and schoolwork. Cheers.
I really believe in having balance in all the important aspects of your life to achieve happiness. If you think you're no longer happy and constantly being stressed out, then it would be great to change the pace :) and take control of what you can ❤ We love seeing you happy and just being creative it's very inspiring❤❤❤
I totally understand the stress about work/life balance with kids. I took 2 years off when my son was born. Then I got back into my candle business, and now I have a candle storefront. He comes to work with me most days and has his own space similar to home. I definitely noticed that I am not able to create as fast as I used to now that I have a 5 yr old, but i'm ok with taking it slow. The business is still doing fine.
It's nice to connect with another artist. Both of my children like drawing and my mother has an art degree. I got a gingerbread pin from you for my daughter. We received the package. Thank you! You put a lot effort in your vlog. We appreciate it. Success in your venture.
I went through the exact same thing. Grew my business from nothing to a very successful Etsy business. Paying my bills, being comfortable but at the same time being stressed and worrying about the future. I decided to step back, find a much better studio solution and focus my product range instead of casting a wide net. Good news is I have my happiness back and creativity with less stress but best of all my business hasn’t suffered. It’s still thriving and I’m so glad I did what did. So go for it. Focus on you and go with your instincts! Good luck! 🍀
There was another RUclipsr who said for her to have Etsy push her products and/ir site more she had to consistently upload new products. The creators of Etsy should know that's a disastrous business model to expect from anyone, let alone an up and coming small business. Ridiculous!
@@alishasimms2846 etsy is a tricky thing. I agree with a lot of the criticisms but at the same time it launched my business and continues to be the biggest driver for me. I have tried going truly independent and that’s much harder. That is what Etsy relies on and why they can get away with so much.
Etsy are getting greedier and greedier every month. The amount of fees there are now for one sale is disgusting 😒 because there is no better alternative. They know they can do it. I've been selling on etsy for over 5 years. They just put a reserve on all my earning for 90 days. And they can't tell me why. I've had to borrow money, just to maintain my orders and bills. It's infuriating.
I created a studio turning my carport into a studio space 25x12, which cost less than $6,000 as we had friends help. I don't have to pay for a studio space and I'm still connected to my home to be close to my kids and I have a quiet space to work!
I’m not sure how feasible this is in your living space, but we built a whole new room (a bit like a log cabin) in our back garden & it doubles up as an office / storage space. We went via a service called ‘Shomera’ in Ireland. It wasn’t massively cheap, but it has given us a home office & much-needed extra space since we don’t have a basement or large attic!
Find a cheap piece of land and convert a pre-made shed into a studio. Or make a studio out of some shipping containers, people have made some great studios/houses/shops out of those. Then you may be paying for the land but you'll eventually own it and the building will be made by you guys so no more rent. You could also plan a small Cafe for part of it.... just some ideas 🥰
I like that someone already remarked “cut costs any way you can”…and that “maybe you can get a social media manager”…..would be perfect if you had the space at home to work from there. In “time” after you’ve written some books/tv shows for kids/movies and so on, then you can get a big office/studio….remember, we love u for your “brand”, not the size of your studio💗💗💗
I'm a small business owner/creator and have an almost 2yro daughter (born at the start of the pandemic). I can say, working from home is very hard with a small child but I don't think I would like it any other way because I get to spend so much time with her and see her grow. She is only this little for so long and although sometimes the business side suffers , we as a family gain so much more staying together :)
Happy to see you looking well post-surgery! 🙏 you continue to heal and grow stronger each day. Here's my two cents on the studio/business issue. I have two now-grown sons. Pre-children, I worked as Administrative Faculty at a college and am a trained counselor. When we decided to start our family, it made sense for me to be at home full-time. I was between jobs and I was 37 when my first was born, so I felt fine about taking a break. As it turned out, I was unable to work during my 40's when my kids were young (major migraine issue), but I would have loved a very part-time, relatively stress-free home-based business. Looking back, I do NOT regret being there for my kids through the school years. Those years are TOUGH for kids trying to negotiate their way through peer pressure and all the crap that can be available to them as well as their own personal struggles. I was so thankful I had the time and headspace to really "notice" them...a change in demeanor, a bad day at school, a difficult time with a teacher...whatever it might be. Not everyone has that luxury or privilege, obviously, but by tight- budgeting we were able to do it. I don't think you would regret simplifying your business at all. Kids are the losers when parents are stressed, so for them and for you and for Dean, I think it's a great idea.
Firstly, massive hugs. I feel every single business women who has children or other big commitments feels the exact same as you've shared with us. This may come across as controversial, however. Children take so much of our time as it is, like a lot. My business is a massive release for me. I wake up every day so excited to see what my brain is going to do, when I'm not being a mum. I've got 4 children, youngest being 7 months. Life is full on. The business which I've created is my 5th baby. Please don't push your katnip studios away without realising it - ultimately you do what makes you happy and you feel is right 💋 OX
I was checking around yesterday to see if I could find any updates from you, post surgery! I am so so happy you are back!!!!!!!! Sending you much love Catherine
Something you could do in the future when you're looking at bigger houses because you're family is growing, you could look for finished basements to run part of you business form, so you're home more when you kids need you. So when you need a bigger space for products it doesn't have to be as big.
That would be great, we've just moved into a new house, but unfortunately our mortgage is strictly residential and wont allow us to run a business from home 😭I don't understand why but that would of been great!
Your openness and honesty about this subject is much appreciated! I’ve been trying to simplify too and sometimes feel I’m battling expectations for me to expand in similar ways but I know I’d end up feeling this way you’re describing. That intuition can be hard for people to understand! Have you thought about using a storage facility for bulk stock like your plushies? That’s something I’ve considered as it’s a lot cheaper than studio space. Hope you’re feeling well after your surgery 😊 xx
I got a gastric bypass 3 years ago. The first two months were horrible. Always weak and tired but after that I never regretted it. Lost 70kg in the first year and I am a new person now. Hope you feel strong soon and that everything is healing normally. Give your body time and be gentle and patient with yourself. This is a massive change. Sending you lots of love and energy! ❤️❤️
Brilliantly shared honesty about what it’s truly like when dreams and hard work pay off. More choices that work best for K 💜 future and how sweet to share. Thank you
I think it’s very smart of you to plan ahead! I started my Etsy shop when my first child was born, it was a lot of work. As my business grew it got harder, by the time I had my second child after a very hard pregnancy I completely burnt out and had to close my business which broke my heart because I was so proud of what I built, but I needed that break. After a few years of just being a mama and only doing freelance contracts here and there I got my energy and drive back and I started a new business. I’ve been building it up slowly and enjoying the slower pace and a more balanced lifestyle. All this to say your foresight will serve you well, I wish I had planned the same way, but I definitely learned my lesson and things are not as stressful this time around!
I love your videos so much, your always so true and honest. Really glad you're taking it easy and healing. There is so much to be said for keeping things small. I think you're so right about that ultimately giving you more freedom xxx
You are so right! So many people spend their lifetime working to pay for things (large homes, vehicles) that they can’t freely enjoy because they have to work countless hours wiling away in order to pay for them. Eventually living minimalistic finds its way too late.
As a mama of 2 kiddies (7yo & 1.5yo) as well as a business owner, I can tell you that your whole world changes when you have kids. You are so torn between the person you once were and the mama you want to be. Finding that balance can be very tricky but is 100% worth it. I currently run my business from my house and I love that my 1.5 yo can wander in and give me a cuddle while I’m designing or sit next to me scribbling on a colouring book while I’m packing orders. I get to have lunch with him everyday and I never miss any of my older son’s school activities because I can work my own hours. I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. Is there any way that you can run your business from home? Or perhaps have a small studio built out the back? You would never have to worry about paying rent and you can always have the flexibility of working around your children.
FWIW, I think you're super brave! A family member has been offered bariatric surgery but she's just too nervous to even contemplate having it done. Wishing you a speedy recovery! 💜
I think you should definitely simplify! As a business owner myself I completely understand where you are at and I believe we ultimately started this for the freedom. So I say simplify girl! You can always change your mind but I like to say “less is more”. You will have more creative freedom if you aren’t thinking how you will pay this big rent each month
Working a lot when my children were very little I missed out on so much. If I could change anything it would be to be able to be with my children more when they were little. They are only little once and time goes so fast to begin with so I would say do what makes you happy. A smaller studio with more time for you might what you want. Just my opinion but I wish I really thought about how I could’ve stayed home and if I had to work, to try and not work so many hours away from my children. It’s very easy to get caught up in the momentum of the day. Take care and god bless!
First, welcome back! I am glad you came safely through your surgery. Regarding an opinion, here is my 2 cent: I said on another of your videos that you are spreading yourself too thin. I think it is wise to focus on one area of the business and then grow as you have the time and capital to do so, because each new area - stationery, apparel, jewelry and novelty items - has a different set of requirements and marketing schemes that will mandate you focus on each one. But, this is a great learning lesson for me also. I am glad to see what goes on behind the scenes of running a small business. Like you, I am not trying to be the next Juvia's Place or Loreal... at least not yet! I want independence to enjoy the latter half of my life. So, thank you.
You should make more medical stickers! Like the pills you made! (like a reminder to take or to order more) but for more things like Periods (to keep track of flow) and other check-ups like Glasses appointments, Jabs, You'd make them positive to look forward to as people would have cute stickers to use for them!! I'd personally love an Asthma Inhaler for example for my asthma check-ups / reorders :)
Hi Catherine! I am so glad to see you doing well from your surgery! I was wondering if you would ever do a video on transforming a small side business into something full time? I know you’ve done lots of business advice videos, but this is something I would love to see in-depth! Stay well, happy, and peaceful!!!
Hi Catherineeee! Glad you are healing up from the surgery! Thanks for the heart to heart, it was lovely to hear you talk about this. As someone who has a small biz but also a job I have worked hard to keep my small biz as a stress free zone as it's my passion and my hobby. I have a little creative space but I don't make large stock. It's possible you need a creative studio for working on your stuff and packing orders, and then get storage space nearby for the excess stock and large items so you don't have to have such a big space. I hope you find what works for you! xxxx
I started my business journey in 2019 and found your channel at the same time and fell in love with it. I got pregnant right after I started my business and I can tell you, your child will take over your life. Especially if you want to be 100% there for your baby you won't be able to give it all to your business as much. I wish I knew what people meant when they said that I wouldn't have time anymore. There is no word to describe it especially the first months. So I recommend you go for the smaller studio that will take some stress off your shoulders (aka paying a big rent) and optimise your business. Try to plan right now as if you wouldn't be able to be in the office for days or even weeks in a row. Produce your stickers elsewhere, make the packing more time and cost efficient. Your future self will thank you for it.
I used to work for a woman who designed prints, cards, notepads, and calendars. She had a large wholesale business and some online retail. She then opened up a store (and a second one) since we are in a summer tourist area. I think a wholesale line is a way to go. Everything was printed for her (she was not digital) and her garage was turned into a mini warehouse. Eventually she sold the wholesale part of it to the store manager and licensed her work to her manager. She works from home other than the two stores and does also have some books but they are distributed by a local, seashore publishing company.
that one thing i love in this channel is i feel that freedom vibe like u said & yeah, watching catherine do her little things makes me so envious because i work 8-5 job and nothing is ever really enough. this channel is my safe haven, im a journal/diary lover myself & i love watching packing orders obviously Stan for it ✨🌸but yeah, hope we'll figure out life-someday... so much 🤍 for this channel
I think that it's hard to plan too far into the future bc as you said, you`ll never know what's about to come so you can always only make a decision that feels right for the moment. It's all we ever can do. So if you right now feel like you need a smaller space bc it overwhelms you to have rent always haunting you then go for it. It's never too late to build it back up again. That's the flexibility of renting, you don't have to sell it and then buy again and run into the problem of losing money like this. You're renting so you're fine. And I have worked in the Co-Working area for a couple years and in my experience there will always be vacancies again. Sometimes it takes some patience but they will pop back up eventually. All the best to you
from a practical point of view, i think you can totally get a smaller space, if you optimize your inventory. Stationary doesn't take up too much space. If you get taller shelves you can use the part that's difficult to reach for bigger but lighter items such as plushies. If you use containers that are as slim as possible that also saves space. If packing tables are near a wall, you can hang a shelving unit as well for the stuff that's now blocking the table. at this moment this studio isn't utilizing one wall so all of that is essentially wasted space
As a parent and business owner I found it easier to work from home in the end just because your time becomes limited and more broken up if that makes sense. I had a small studio in the back garden but barely used it because I couldn’t bring toys and all the play stuff out there.
I know you said all the spaces in your current building are taken, but if there is a communal board somewhere it may be worth putting up a note seeing if anyone would want to swap spaces. Chances are someone else would want more space than they currently have, and it would minimise moving stress if you could do so within the same building as you did previously.
Good to hear your surgery went well. Make sure you rest. As you are thinking about having a family, would having a studio in your house, or future house, or in the basement be a good idea? As when kids are small you will constantly have to be with them and if studio is at home you can still use it throughout the day. I know you like personal and work life separate so this may not work for you. I like the view from your current studio but if it is too big fir what you need definitely simplify. Your customers will still grow:) happy recovery ❤️🩹
It's such a difficult dilemma. But I think simplifyling could help you being more you! Bigger isn't always better, following what feels good has always helped me. 😊 In the end of the day I would not want to feel super tired of working, I want to be satisfied with what I've done that day. In which a cosy, bright space could help giving me that energy. ☺ I would like to feel 'home' in a space.
I’m in the USA and I founded one of my businesses while I was on bed rest pregnant with my 2nd. My dream was like yours, to have a rental space. Over the next 2 years, I spent more and more time away as the business grew. The point of my business was freedom with my kids, too! So we ended up building a 20x20 space behind our home. My commute to work was my backyard. This was over 14 years ago. I ended up closing the biz as our life changed, kids grew, and are now in high school but we have kept the investment of the building and it added value to our property. It’s a true “She Shed.”
This was absolutely lovely to watch and listen to. I am a stay-at-home mom to four amazing children and it can be really tough. I have spent the past several months *seriously* simplifying my life and I have to say, if you feel like you need to head in that direction, go for it! It makes all the difference. Everything that you said is totally valid and you will find what is right for you and Dean. You will have to pivot and adjust, but you can absolutely make it work. You are so insightful and when you were describing different timeline options, like waiting to focus on plushies, planning to eventually do childrens books, etc, it hit me right in the gut. I struggle so much with a sense of urgency, like I am running out of time or something. Haha! What a crock! You talking so matter-of-factly about waiting to do certain things until perhaps your children were in school was so timely for me. My children are school-aged and while we homeschool, I still find plenty of time to work on my business and creative projects. You reminded me that I can have long-term goals. I don't need to try to do it all right now. You are full of wisdom, Catherine.
In 2007 my hubby and I opened up a fashion boutique here in Las Vegas, fast forward to 2015 we had franchised our company and grown into 15 stores nationwide, we grew to big too fast and lost any freedom we had, we also were paying $20,000 in payroll and leases for the business.... the true luxury in business is not money...it's freedom, now if you go back to a smaller scale the feeling will be different, because you're different....but it'll be filled with gratitude, you'll be grateful to feel that sense of freedom and options you once had. We closed our shops in 2017, and started working from home, I would Never go back to big rents or leases again. I understand your predicament, only piece of advice I can offer you is to go with your gut, it's 99% right all the time ❤
Long time follower and fan, first comment! But I feel the SAME. I'm 30, my biz is amazing to support me but I'm always stressed and busy. I'm also on the kids thought and how my life and biz will play out with that. That weird line. Your thoughts and experience (from day 1) are so true and helpful! Thank you and hope you're doing well from your surgery!
Follow your gut, would be my advice 🙌 small studio focusing on stationary and your book illustration goals is what you want while you adjust to health conditions and kids then you do that chick! Your real fans will support you through all your choices and keep invested in you and your journey. No matter where it leads x
I’m 31 and haven’t had children either. I’m getting bypass at the end of the year and honestly, it can’t come fast enough. I’m so happy you made the decision for you and I’m excited to see where the next few years lead 💕
I feel you need to decide if work comes 1st or family as if you are the main creative person in the business you cannot have both fully. Down south we make sure we enjoy friends and family as they are the most important things in life and things can change so quickly. As you pointed out you can always come back to serious growing of your business once (hopefully) children are older as again you will want to cherish the younger years with them even with everyone in-line for babysitting. You could have all the ideas ready for the books too if you use nap times wisely. I wish you all the best what ever you decide. 🥰❤️
aaaa I love the pill stickers! Medicine reminders and refills would be a cute addition to my planner! I am glad you are recovering! Have a wonderful day :3
I love that you don't regret this studio, it was a learning opportunity. But I understand wanting to downsize a bit too! I'm sure rent on a space that size is daunting! As pretty as you have made it, if it still doesn't feel right, find a place that makes you happy! & Cheers to healing
It’s so crazy that I watch this today because I’ll be 30 this year and I’ve been stressing about future babies and making the right decisions now for them. We’re also moving (house) because the place we’ve been renting is being sold. So, randomly today, I wrote in my journal but I addressed it to my future kids and getting all my worries out on paper for some reason… helped. Hope you find your answer 💖 Always great to catch up with your in your videos.
Hey Catherine, first of all get well soon, and fingers cross you get preggers in no time. I'm 34 an have a PCOS and have a beautiful 9 year old twins best surprise of my life! As for the office, I'm kind of in a same mind set although I'm resisting renting a studio space because of the cost, especially that in Oxfordshire for £1000 you cannot get more than 25m2! Which is crazy. We are actually in a process of buying a new house and planning to build an office in the back garden. It will be a massive cost although in a longer perspective it will save on rent. Take it easy . And you da best 💞😙
So glad to see you are doing well after surgery. As for the studio space, like many have suggested at maybe making a home studio in your garden if you have space. I have been looking into converted shipping containers as studio space. Its a sizeable up front cost but would soon pay for itself instead of rent and can be moved with you if you ever change location. Whatever you do it has to be right for you and don't think its a step back changing studios, more of pivot on your path 😊
I’ve always viewed Katnipp as more of a sticker/stationary store and definitely think that’s your businesses strongest seller. I’ve worked with various brands over the years and the best advice I can give that that I have learned is that focusing on your best sellers & core brand identity is the way to really build a reputable business. I love watching your blogs and small business journey, but you do tend to waste a lot of money on studio aesthetics and other products that maybe aren’t as profitable. Also maybe taking a step back and hiring someone to take over handling of your social media so you can just focus on product design may help.
Honestly, I think this is REALLY GOOD constructive feedback. I think it makes sense in some ways with Catherine because she makes RUclips videos as part of her revenue / marketing as well, and having an *aesthetic* office space is one of the selling points in watching her videos. But I agree with this because as viewers, I do often think about how much money she spends on her studio space (like the cute Katnip cafe space) and all the money going into big production pieces that aren't best sellers. I'm the last person to judge someone for spending money how they want haha, but I do understand why she might not have as much money as all of us THINK she should have. Because 67,000 sales on Etsy, $3000 on Patreon, and whatever on RUclips, having a mid-size business but only having the staff of a small business, you would think she wouldn't struggle with money at all. But she spends A LOT on this big studio and I think that's a first good step in the right financial decision. The studio is beautiful, but she's spending so much on something she's not very happy with. I felt like she was happier in her tiny studio back in 2019 but she at least had natural light and such. Also, I think a lot of small business owners who grow, are afraid to hire people for marketing or anything else, because they want full control of every aspect of their business. PLUS, you feel like you're losing more money by having to hire someone. But honestly, ever since I hired a jr designer for my design business, I've made way more revenue. She should absolutely hire a social media or marketing professional. It would make her life so much easier, AND she will make more money in the long run.
Thank you so so much for your advice, I think your right, I think I need to focus on expanding my stationery goods before I branch out into loads of other different things! Its so easy to get excited and want to branch out in every direction, and I would still like to do that! But I might do it much slower and expand the stationary range!
Maybe you could get a smaller office for general day to day working space, then if you need more space for specific product launches like plushies etc you could look into small warehouse / storage space, which you might be able to get on shorter term leases or month by month until you figure out if you permanently need the extra space. Then it’s a short term additional spend and you don’t need to keep moving offices. Could be slightly more tricky logistically but you could work something out around sending out the products that are at the warehouse space on certain days of the week so you don’t have to keep going backwards and forwards all the time 😊
Hi Catherine! I have always watched your channel from my personal account and you are a huge inspiration! You actually inspired me along with so many talented artist to start my own channel. I dream of the day I can afford my own studio space right now I created a small space in my family's dinning room. Even when I can afford my own space I am looking at just making a spare bedroom into my studio space. I am all about saving those $$$, but that's just me :) Self care is very important, take care of yourself and don't stress. Continue to do what you love and you will continue to do well. Take Care!
As a mom of 2 boys and a creator since 2013, it's very easy to relate to your struggle. My studio is at my home, it's easier this way to juggle with both work and family life but it also means that they often mingle. When you have a kid you also can't predict what to expect. Some kids are very easy, sleep and eat well and it's easy to balance your work/home life (I can only imagine, it's not my experience lol). But it's obviously not always the case! And when your kid is sick, which will obviously happen; you want to be able to take some time off. Or just take some time off to snuggle with your baby! Time flies with a baby. I also choose this life because it allows me to pick up my kids at school at 4pm and spent some time with them. It implies that I often work in the evenings and sometimes at the weekend. But I wouldn't trade this life for anything in the world! When I hear you I think that you already made your choice to downsize your studio! I don't feel that it's a step back at all and you seem to manage a move quite easily (!!!) you could move to a bigger space when you'll be ready again! I think it's very smart to do it now and have the time to find the right space, before even trying to conceive. It will free your mind and make this new chapter of your life easier.
Glad to see you back after your surgery~ I hope recovery continues to go well and you feel back to yourself soon! 🌹 Coming from the point of having three children (that we homeschool) and having my studio in the house- my biggest struggle with the home studio is space. Honestly, I love that my children run in and say hi and can cuddle or ask me questions while I work. Sometimes it’s a little disruptive, but mostly in the best of ways. Running a business while being a mother, and having chronic illnesses, the biggest thing that I’ve learnt is that I *have* to build my business in a way so that it won’t matter if I’m not able to work that day(week). I’m striving to create a business where yes, I’m the creative force behind it, but all the actual work of it should be done by someone else… and that includes the socials marketing, customer service, product assembly, etc. If I can’t make the business such that it will run when I’m not there, it’s impossible for it to work with my family life and the current state of my health. And honestly, that would be my advise for anyone wanting to raise children, and spend time with family (or take care of their health) while running a business. Work to create systems that are self-sustaining where ever possible. Sure, there are some jobs you won’t want to hand over - I will always be the designer and product creator for Teacup Girl. I will always want to be filming for YT as I enjoy it so much. But editing is not my fav, so one day someone will do that part, etc, so the team will run the show. Systems are so valuable for building a business that has life balance and resilience for flexibility and freedom as you mentioned. And whatever you need to do to move towards that, whether it be simplifying you space or other things is always a step in the right direction. You got this!! 🌼☺️ I hope that helps, (and makes sense!).
Thank you so so much for sharing your experience, this sounds wonderful and me and dean wanted to move back into our Garage space and extend, but unfortunately, that isn;t possible, we aren't aloud due to our mortgage terms and conditions! Which is such a shame, hopefully we will find a happy medium somewhere in between!
I’ve watched and have been inspired over the years. Though I empathize with your dilemma I think you resolved it quite some time ago when you were planning a launch for Halloween in August. It’s the same thing you would have to do throughout the year. Study the pattern of sales and create inventory accordingly. This way, your expenses get paid and you can rely on your help to stick to the schedule you’ve made to create more product. This way you have freed yourself for home/family or whatever you choose.
Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt feelings regarding the future of Katnipp ❤ Your story has really struck a chord with me. I graduated art school in 2013 and a few months later I found out I was pregnant. My plans for starting a career in art went on the back-burner... and are still there! I was told I was very lucky to get pregnant at all and as I knew my baby would be my only chance to be a mum, I've embraced it wholeheartedly, and it has been amazing. I don't regret a single second of being a stay-at-home (and now home ed) mother. I still try and find time for art most days, even if its just a very short time and it is all done on the dining room table. Whenever I've felt the urge to start my art business I've felt the most enormous guilt. Our babies are small for such a short time and I would say, grab that time with both hands and keep it close. You will never regret it. I know you have a business to run already, but try and delegate as much as you can. If you find smaller premises that don't cost as much, maybe invest some money in an extra member of staff, even if its just part-time. They will generate income so it shouldn't all end up as an expense for you. Hope this helps. You are amazing and so inspirational. Sending much love xx
Catherine, I think you are so much more sure of what you want than you think. Or maybe it is just scary! Change is scary. When I think on what I want in life I always think of very old me, looking back on her life, and I always know what decision I will be most proud of in my fake scenario. Maybe your questions are, "Will I be more proud of my business or the family we made?" (of course you can be proud of BOTH but which is more of a priority in this season. You know?) It sounds like your priorities are shifting into to amazing new things! I became a mom in 2020 and while it very happily takes up so much of my time, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I still make time for me and the shop I am soon creating. You won't lose yourself or your business by scaling back. If anything this time has given me the drive to create with a new sense of wonder and joy. Do what is best for you always and keep that sense of wonder and joy in your life and your work. That is one decision you will never regret.
Have you considered asking around the building if anyone would like to swap offices with you? Maybe someone with a smaller office would have liked a bigger one but took what they could get?
I have my own art business and I'm feeling the momentum, the same as you. What you said at the end is exactly it- sometimes you have to take steps back to head in the right direction! Good luck with all your future life plans, I know you got this
Hey Catherine, first off I send you all the best wishes to recover from your surgery! And I also want to share my experience. In January I had a stomach operation (which went wrong and I had another one in February). While being hospitalised I noticed I can't go back to my "safe/monthly pay check" job. I never liked that job and only kept it because it gave me security. Anyway, I turned out quitting my job and now I work as a freelancer artist, photographer and videographer! I just started looking for jobs and already have such amazing opportunities! So if you had similar thoughts when being in hospital you should definitely change your life. Because it is as you said - you never know if maybe one day you are laying there for another reason. May all your wishes come true! I've been here since you very first studio and love watching your videos! Lots of Love - Adrian
I think deep down you've made your decision, you might just be scared since it's a big change. It's important to focus on your health and other needs in life. You could downsize and rent a storage unit which could hold your plushies and other extra materials, that way you can grow as you please while not stress about lack of room. If you want to stay in your building, maybe make a posting in the building asking if anyone in a small unit is looking to move into a bigger one and you could swap? All the best
I know exactly how you feel. I wish I had a studio but currently just have a room filled with thousands of products. They are all small so I can but I really would love to expand at some point but space and things aren't going too well anywhere right now everything is getting so expensive Etsy, shipping and everything else. I say go with your gut weigh out the pros and cons try to figure out where you see yourself in the future and if you can find a spot closer to home so the kid thing would be easier.
Hi! Your studio space is lovely but when the world is changing around, it's good to think about the financial impacts from all aspects and if the rent and other prices inflate more next year, the outlook could be bleak. I admire your smarts, your artstyle and ideas like bariatric stickers and the future book illustrations. Positive vibes and all the best to you all ✨️😁🌸💫🦋☔️💚🤗
There seems to be a lot on your plate! I feel like I am in a similar situation as you but obviously in a completely different way… but I am also contemplating my future. You have to do what’s right for yourself to be in a better place in the future… it’s clear you can’t continue in this space, it just doesn’t seem right. It’ll be interesting to watch your transformation both physically and businesslly 💖
Isn't that the reason we opened our own business to begin with eheh? xxxxx
😍
I really commend you for asking yourself difficult questions, because it sounds like you want to live your life and not being tied down by work all the time. You are such a strong and amazing person! I totally support you simplifying your life - but I totally understand it’s much easier said than done. I feel like I’m also asking myself some of these questions, and I’ve taken a step back to think about stuff and it’s been quite liberating. I think no matter what you decide, you will still be successful because you’re doing what’s best for you, and I support that! 💕💕 And if you ever want to talk, you have a friend in me!
hehe oh my gosh thank you so so much Mira! This is so inspiring for me, heheh
Get a big cabin built in your garden (if you have one) and put the studio in there. :D Awesome commute when you have kids.
Love this idea! That would ideal! No rent, always there for the kiddies and It will be so cosy 🥰
I second this!! If you own your property and can put a cabin or converted shed on it, that is the most ideal.
this a great idea cause then she could decorate the outside just like her Katnipp Cafe!
Not good idea in uk too many restrictions
@@juliehodges3894 should be ok if you own your house, you don’t need planning permission for summer houses 🏠
Please dont forget us when you become extra pretty and all slimmer soon 🥺🥺🥺 Fast recovery ❤
I bet you are not the only one thinking about changing things up at the the moment 😇💕
Good luck!
@@TeacupGirl I can tell you speak from experience too.
Thank you so so much for both sharing your excperience! I like to plan ahead so this is super handy to hear, thank you so so much! YOU DA BEST
Not a good idea in the uk too many restrictions.
@@juliehodges3894 Sadness
:') I wish I could do this but unfortunately I'm not aloud by my mortgage company 😭
You are so sweet and talented! I hope you have a smooth healing journey.
"I have different internal organs" 🤣 love you
Firstly, massive hugs.
You are amazing and I wish all the happiness, success and children you want!
I love how open you are about your surgery. You’re amazing and I wish you an amazing journey!
Brilliantly shared honesty about what it’s truly like when dreams and hard work pay off. More choices that work best for K 💜 future and how sweet to share. Thank you
Catherine glad to see that you are well, take it easy! Mull everything over...do what's best for you. Good luck! 🍀
Listen to your intuition. It's not taking a step backward if it makes you feel better. :)
Always go with your gut feeling on downsizing or whatnot! And you are already looking skinnier! So glad you’re back home and safe.
She makes cute period stickers!
Hi Catherine! I am so glad to see you doing well from your surgery! I was wondering if you would ever do a video on transforming a small side business into something full time? I know you’ve done lots of business advice videos, but this is something I would love to see in-depth! Stay well, happy, and peaceful!!!
I will write this down! I would love to share this!
Sometimes you have to break something down to built it right. Follow your instincts. Sounds like you know what you need to be happy.
So much love surgery or no surgery. That happiness is real.
Your handwriting is perfection Catherine 😍
Sometimes, what we think we want, leads us to what we actually need. Do what feels right for you and your family
Hi Catherine. Wishing you well on your weight loss journey. It is so important to keep the stress levels at a minimum as you heal. You are amazing.
I understand your predicament, only piece of advice I can offer you is to go with your gut, it's 99% right all the time ❤
You take easy because you have had major surgery don't over do it honey x
Congratulations on your successful bariatric surgery, Catherine. Love the stickers, too.
I agree. I had 2 salons and downgraded to 1 that I can run from my home now. When you have children you really want life to be focused on them.
Take Care!
I've been MIA for awhile and remember you moving into that studio. I just had wls as well. Its pretty rough in the beginning but it gets better.
Coming from the point of having three children (that we homeschool) and having my studio in the house- my biggest struggle with the home studio is space. 🌼☺️
I hope that helps, (and makes sense!).
Omg. I am 100% going to get these stickers! I really want them. I've never seen anything so cute!!!
You know?)
It sounds like your priorities are shifting into to amazing new things!
I hope your recovering well from your surgery! 🤍 sending all the positive vibes 💕💕💕💕 btw what journal are you using for planning? 🥰
Hi! Your studio space is lovely but when the world is changing around, it's good to think about the financial impacts from all aspects and if the rent and other prices inflate more next year, the outlook could be bleak. I admire your smarts, your artstyle and ideas like bariatric stickers and the future book illustrations. Positive vibes and all the best to you all ✨️😁🌸💫🦋☔️💚🤗
I would say do whatever makes you the most happy. Sounds cheesy but its true!
