@@MichaelJones-eq4ne like I said, her king was in his rooks lane, meaning by technicality it was a mate and she would've lost, but that's only if Beltik noticed and called her out on it, but he didn't and so he lost
@Samuel Chavarría Nobody has posted a reasonable answer to your question. One problem is that whoever wrote the dialogue in ep.3 at 34:00 didn't understand the chess game (the real game was Nezhmtdinov-Kasparian 1955). Benny Watts told Beth that Beltik could have beaten her, and she then set up the position and saw that 30.c4 was better than the move Beth played, h5. However Beth still had a winning position after 30.h5, but she also said "Beltik could have beat me." Wrong. If Beltik had played 30...gxh5 white should play 31.Bh3. It's possible that netflix filmed a clip that shows Beth making a losing move in the Beltik game, but if so they must have cut that scene.

I loved the show and I appreciate the work that you obviously put into this video, not only with organising to get the rights to show these clips, but also with little detailes like the youtube-intern timestamps per game. Good job!
I especially appreciate seeing the Luchenko game, which had mystified me on the screen for a simple if silly reason. With the stylized chess set they used, I mistook the black King and Queen in the final position - even after freezing the shot of the board. With those pieces reversed, I could not fathom why White resigned when Qe8# looked pretty good!
One thing that I found interesting in this video was the show's repeated use of adjournments as justification for the "alternate reality" versions of games that appear in it. Rather than try to claim that your fictional characters are better chess players than the historical ones who donated the source games, you can say, "oh, she had all night to theorycraft and that's why she found this more interesting line". Thanks for the video! I'll try to remember to check out this series if I ever get back on Netflix.

And as i've done that, i've revisited the show on netflix again and again. And now I notice that in most games, Harmon not only uses her queen aggressively; she gambits her queen in most games. I'm assuming that kasparov and the director exhausted almost all first-8-move queen gambit game permutations that can be had, just to fill the show.
I think they just needed her to have a chess playing style that a wider audience could understand without knowing theory while also fitting her character. Aggressively gambitting the queen often fits that role haha. The show is also based off of the novel, where I'm assuming most of the games are similar

The Queens Gambit is a great advert for Chess especially for girls and non-Chess players. The story line is based on the American, Bobby Fischer who famously only played 1 e4 before winning Game 6 in the 1972 World Championship with The Queens Gambit against the Champion, Boris Spassky from Russia in which he sportingly congratulated Bobby on a great game and was considered the best game of the Championships. Bobby Fischer was a Chess prodigy and at 14 years old won the United States Championships. The one trait that is incorrect is the drug substance abuse as I have never come across that from any Chess player of any ability being that it would affect their game negatively. I thought the performance was excellent in which the chess games were from those played by past Masters. Adjourning a game did occur in the 1972 World Championship for which they are no longer used for many years since the development of chess engines and players playing shorter games to a finish.

It’s so interesting because in the book when she plays Borgov for the first time (who is also depicted as being shorter and more stout in the book lol) they play the Ruy Lopez. Wonder why they went with the Sicilian in the show. Either way they did an amazing job with the show
This Series got me into chess. Didn't used to play chess or listen to any youtubers of chess. After watching this movie played some chess games and now I have several chess channels subscribed and watch them regularly. Did not even know this would happen to me even after finishing the series.
I watched the first episode yesterday and there were scenes involving her dreaming about chess and it reminded me of my old days and part of why I quit 😂 I used to see chess in my dreams all the time and would calculate moves and continue play against myself or even against someone or something that would make the moves for the other “player” (also myself I guess lol). Either way, chess took over my dreams and at first, it wasn’t all that bad as I was making progress with it, but it eventually got annoying to the point of almost driving me insane. Mind you, this was at a relatively young age much like in the show, so I was interested in other things like sports and cars and those did not mix well at the chess tournaments, but I kind of wish I had not quit and kept playing. I’m sure a lot of people have similar dreams so I guess there’s just those who like them and use them and those who don’t 😂 I do want to start playing again, as I never thought as clearly and with as much determination as I did when I was younger. Found this channel recently and am really enjoying it. Thanks!
Thanks for all of the effort that went into this video, Levy. So entertaining and instructional. Love the work that you are doing. As long as you are doing it, I will be watching.

I wonder if Kasparov knew RUclips would break down these clips to this degree, or if it was just his personal integrity as a consultant that drove him to create these novelties, and I also wonder what GMs are hoping after this series to be able to give input on a follow up or similar show They really gave so little pretentiousness to the level of chess that was being acted, and it's great to see how appreciated it all was by a pretty niche community

The queens gambit came out and i have been playing chess ever since. I cant stop. Wont stop.
So what I learned is that if I take copious amounts of tranquilizers I can beat Magnus Carlsen
Loved the game against Luchenko, so wholesome and probably the only game in the show where Beth respects his oponent lol
Thanks!
When you see two random objects facing each other, and think "oh! The beer bottles are in opposition"
this kind of reminds me of when I started getting into tetris, and saw everything as a tetrinomino block
@@fishecake2794 Wikipedia calls it the Tetris Effect.
I still play chess in dreams even in my adulthood! Usually, the brain will visualize what you do a lot in the day, especially before sleeping!
So I'm not alone😅 😮💨, trust me I'd be playing knight moves when I see a couple of tiles on the floor , it just happens unconsciously...
Great Video, Levy! For all the new people here who want to get into chess, levy offers great courses. His e4 e5 ny style helped me a lot!
Thank you for this video! I've got inspired to learn to play chess from this series and that's how I landed on your channel :)
Loved the series; it got me back into playing after decades off.
Also loved the analysis. Great work.
Thanks for all of the effort that went into this video, Levy. So entertaining and instructional. Love the work that you are doing. As long as you are doing it, I will be watching.
As someone who has watched the show, I can confirm, those clips AND sound are indeed from the show. Thank you Levy!
Really cool analysis! I found it difficult to follow what was happening while watching the show so it's great to see the different games deconstructed here :) Keep up the great content!
Do I detect a hint of emotions when talking about that last game? What a fantastic show and beautiful game. Loved every minute of it.
Beautifully put-together presentation. Thank you. I appreciated the accuracy of the chess in the series, but could never have delved this deeply. Wonderful work.
I loved the show and I appreciate the work that you obviously put into this video, not only with organising to get the rights to show these clips, but also with little detailes like the youtube-intern timestamps per game. Good job!
Maybe Anya can join us on stream and talk chess.
I hope she starts streaming Chess! That would be awesome!
Does she even Play ?
@Stanislav Hronek Why would she start streaming chess then ? Anyway in my mind shes still the world Champion besides i would Love to See her learn to play
@Stanislav Hronek I read that she learned the basics before shooting the show
She doesn’t really play chess
Great video Levy!!! I was just getting back into chess when this show came out. Now I'm really pumped to memorize all your 10 min openings :D
We need some classical backing track for our own matches for some epicness!
Good job on the analysis. I love the show as well. I never played chess before. Happy to see the different RUclips videos and mobile apps to get a beginner started. Thank you.
Ooh I've watched two episodes already, maybe soon I'll find time to finish the series. Thank you for taking such care to not spoil anything
Fantastic analysis for a fantastic show! Not only was the chess great in the show, the storyline and actors were equally amazing!
>Me who regularly watches hour long Got Ham Chess rating climbs
But Levy I don't have TIME to watch the show!
On RUclips there's a channel called "down the rabbit hole" (i think) who posted a great 2hr video about the 1990s kasparov vs deep blue matches.....
It's excellent
@@someoneelse293 I would also recommend it.
@@someoneelse293 Would recommend it, too! Especially if you like chess and computer science!
Great video, thanks! There was also the Morphy "opera game" shown during her speed chess session in that NY basement.
Me, someone who knows squat about chess and is not a quick thinker: mm, yes she should've gone to D6
aaaaawesome work dude! love it and love you
I really hope there is another video where you say how it happens in the end for everyone who has already watched it.
Wow, great job. Thank you. I knew little about chess before the series, but watching it inspired me to start playing as it did for many others. I am so far enjoying playing against the computer, but am a bit overwhelmed at how much there is to learn! Love your channel, and pick up something new every time I watch one of your videos.
Finally live! Great work Levy.
great analysis for a chess noob like me. cant wait to learn more from your channel, keep it up
Kasparov told in interview why he picked this certain games.
Gary Kasparov worked on the Queens Gambit? Dang now I have to watch it!
This show makes me pick up chess again. Last I've played was like 8 or 10 years ago.
Finished the series last night and was hoping for an analysis of the games and here it is! Excellent timing.
If Levy got rid of his beard he would look exactly like the tournament director in Moscow
good job I followed this with the series and I caught every bit of it... pretty nice..I be following it word for words
me, a confused idiot: there's only one game in the queens gambit?? chess???
Levy is so wholesome in this video oh how far we’ve come.
Whenever I watched her very first game with the janitor, after he brought the bishop out on move 2, I was like, “oh no she’s gonna fall for the scholar’s mate.” And then she did and I laughed so hard 😂
On RUclips there's a channel called "down the rabbit hole" (i think) who posted a great 2hr video about the 1990s kasparov vs deep blue matches.....
It's excellent
I wonder if Kasparov knew RUclips would break down these clips to this degree, or if it was just his personal integrity as a consultant that drove him to create these novelties, and I also wonder what GMs are hoping after this series to be able to give input on a follow up or similar show
They really gave so little pretentiousness to the level of chess that was being acted, and it's great to see how appreciated it all was by a pretty niche community
Kasparov is *very* self aware and that, in addition to his professional pride, drove him. IMO
@@josiahbrush4324 but we've also seen him get salty to a point which shows he doesn't understand the exact way things apply for social media. I'm just wondering whether he understood the scope of what this show could be vs just getting a pay check, loving the beauty of the game, and knowing your name's on it and some people might check it out
yo its crazy how much youve changed to may 2021 love it either way!
when i first heard of this show i was expecting it to be bad due netflix putting propaganda in many of its shows that destroys the show but this was an amazing show and the first full netflix series ive seen
propaganda???

This show got me back into chess. Played in tournaments in highschool but fell off during college. So glad I’m playing again, feels like I’m learning the game again, very exciting
dang early so I have a chance to ask lol levy how did did you get to the IM title like not I won a game I want the story if you can make a video about it
lmao

someone else thx for the suggestion I enjoyed it I meant by his story is how he became as strong to flex finding a premoved mate in 6 in 10 seconds when there is a mate in one
@@user-wc7we6ku2s lol
I think levy is currently working on a video called road to gm. Idk when it will come out of ever. But he did mention it on stream when people asked him this question and something about titles
I watched the série and it is great to have your comments on the main games, tks for the effort
When Borgov & Beth clasped hands I cry every time
Thanks for the entertaining video. It was nice to break up the explanation and make it understandable for the majority of people who are not IMs.
Beth Harmon is Bobby Fischer
And Borgov is spassky
That’s how I looked at it
Benny is also Bobby Fischer, he told that chess championships deserve more attention
Nah the author said Beth Harmons character was based on Levy Rosman
really great vid showing both the analysis board and clips from the show. cheers!
yes
sulde zulaa bid 3 uzev! nice shu bro
Goy shuu broji ♥️
Kkkk❤️
no
8:18 Levy's facial expression just screams: "what's it to ya?" and I love it
Beth Harmon is clearly based on Levys life. Everything about Beth is exactly how Levy grew up and lives.... as a proud subscriber of Gothamchess on twitch I felt a lot closet to Levy after watching and I think his courage to overcome the obstacles he did in life is incredible and an example to us all.
I love how you mentioned that the actor for Harry Beltik is the same as Dudley from Harry Potter because you have some slight Daniel Radcliffe vibes
anyone else watched the series and just get frustrated at this video for not explaining till the end?
this video made me watch the queen's gambit purely so that i could see your analysis. thanks for the rec lev!
The show was stunningly accurate and realistic. The amount of simping a beautiful female received in a male dominated game was brilliantly portrayed.
I was gonna watch your video to the end but when you did not show the end game of each game, it made me watch the whole series again.
Hi! I really enjoy your analysis! However, for those who are new to chess it is hard to visualize the last few moves of the games you’re addressing. It would be helpful for us novices for you to explain the games through to the end. Although that may seem tedious to some, especially those who are experts, but for many I think it would be exceedingly beneficial. Thanks!
