How Strong Are You Blindfolded? (Experiment)
#fitness #gym #bodybuilding
I once went for a deadlift PR and misloaded the bar by a full 20kg and still made the lift as I expected to be moving up only by 2.5kg not 22.5kg, there’s definitely a psychological element to it.
Holy shat that is lowkey hilarious
I once tricked my brain into letting me succeed on a 1 rep max deadlift by exchanging the third large plate with two smaller ones (on both sides of course ^^) that added up to the same weight. Because I had noticed that three big plates looked more intimidating to me and made me doubt if I could lift it, which made me fail.
Deadlift is the only lift i trust myself to do this on
I had an old gym buddy who would slip the weight up on machines, smith machine, leg press etc when you weren’t looking. And I would always hit my expected reps but at higher a weight.
I went for a deadlift PR of 250 when I was new to lifting, after my buddy says, nice PR, but did you mean to load 275? Total mind crunch.

@Jesus_loves_you12 too bad I don't
Here's a different perspective nearly all of you most likely did not know before.
Jesus Christ the Messiah (peace be upon him) was taken to Heaven by Lord/God/TheCreator because some wanted him dead, so God saved him (be patient, continue reading, you will see ''the matrix'', upto you to escape it). (extensive detail in folder 3 in my playlists)
The word christ comes from the Greek word 'christos' meaning chosen/annointed (annointment is the act of chosing)
the word messiah comes from the Arabic/Hebrew word 'messiach', again meaning chosen.
Jesus did not speak Greek or Arabic or Hebrew, he spoke Aramaic.
John 14:28
“I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I”
John 20:17
'‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
John 5:30
"I cannot do anything on my own."
Mark 10:18
''Why do you call me good? No one is good, except God alone.''
(that ''father'' does not mean flesh and bone father, rather TheGuide/God,
worship TheCreator/TheGuide/TheGod and not the prophets, peace be upon them all)
So, Who chose Jesus?
TheCreator/TheGod/TheLord did.
To do what?
To convey that there is TheCreator/TheGod/TheLord and only ThatSupreme power should be worshipped and prayed to and NO idols/conjured up god/s by human kind,
be it a man, a spirit of a man, a sun, a star, a moon, a tree, an animal etc etc be worshipped in any way.
Anything that is worshipped besides TheGod is a god, that is false god, hence with a small ''g''.
There is one Creator, hence why TheGod, the only One deserving of worship.
What does Allah mean as a word?
It means TheCreator/TheGod/TheLord.
What does ''elaah'' mean as a word?
It means any idol or conjured up god or gods that are false and do not deserve worship of any kind, hence why Islam rejects all gods but TheGod/TheCreator/TheLord/Allah.
Why are all religions in opposition of Islam?
Because they have a god or many gods but TheGod that is worshipped in someway or another.
Have you ever read a Quran from start to finish?
That you can answer for your self.
(I recommend the Sahih International english translation, it's good).
Best wishes.
-------------------------------
.....btw.....
Jesus did preach to worship the OneGod/TheCreator and not anything else, and so did his followers, peace be upon them all.
This unsettled the Roman Empire because this idea of Monotheism went against their pagan beliefs where the emperor was both emperor and god. They persecuted the followers of Jesus and even attempted to kill Jesus, even a Roman Empire servant Saul of Tarsus was out to kill Jesus.
Saul never managed to meet Jesus in real life but after Jesus was taken up to Heaven Saul said he saw a dream and said he will now preach the teachings of Jesus. Saul of Tarsus is also known in todays christianity as Saint Paul, so todays christians are actually on the teaching of ''Saint'' Paul which brings in trinity and godhead figure of Jesus and rejects Monotheism.
-Jesus was commanded to preach Monotheism, which he did and early followers were Monotheistic (Islamic) believing people, which later changed with the Roman Empires paganism spreading
-Jesus was commanded to preach ONLY to the Israelites, which he did, but after him Saul of Tarsus aka ''saint Paul'' started to preach to the Gentiles, which is the foundation of todays christiandom.
-Jesus was commanded to rule for the circumsicion which he did, but it was taken out after he left
-Roman Empire in 325 AD held a council, with empire alligned 'scholars'' to decide and VOTE on whether Jesus was to be worshipped or not, they VOTED that Jesus be accepted as god (in aliagn with the pagan beliefs of the Roman traditions) and ever since the trinity became the 'christian way' (not what Jesus preached), and sinc that time the Church has chronicled how many times the ''Bible'' has been changed, verses removed and verses added to SUIT this altered idea of trinity!
So everyone got it right, but at least we got that sick opera flex at 2:10

Spoilers! Oh well, what I am doing in comments
Ayee, was surprised and expecting that at the same time. Because i thought that people might have a feeling for how specific weights might feel, but maybe that is only valid for low weights and if you are in very high weights (like that 400 lbs + deadlift) how you feel on that day could result in a big range of possible weight.
That was horrible

You shouldve done it where you mixed up who was heavier/lighter each exercise
Not much data anyway. Mixing it for each lift, maybe you couldn't reach ANY conclusion at all.
If they did that with, say, 25 to 50 lifters, then that would be an interesting experiment (re reaching a perhaps statistically significant conclusion).
Would be an interesting follow up experiment. He already established that they can sense if weight was what they expected it to be @@rogergeyer9851
That’s not a controlled experiment. That would randomize everything and skew all results.
I think it would be better if you used plates that were calibrated higher rather than blind folding them and introducing a second variable.
It’s just sunglasses with something on the edge so they can’t see the plates
@@lilleroybeats3870 Not being able to go through your whole routine can alter the results. Even just being able to see the plates matters
I guess they needed a fake reason for the video...
@@MuttonChops24 well also maybe a safety hazard but if they do believe they can hit the weight that they never did maybe it can help a bit but it can go either way
@@MuttonChops24just have Americans lift with metric plates, we’d have no idea how much was on the bar, lol.
It depends on my mental state that day. I noticed that any time I do better than I expect, it’s because I’m happy and thinking positively about myself. If I am down and having bad thoughts about myself I fail and it just spirals lol. Mental health is physical health vice versa
I am the exact opposite. My best reps were when I had so much anger in me and wanted to hurt someone
@@texasranger7687 angry isn't feeling down or having bad thoughts about yourself. Anger (if channeled correctly at the gym) is actually a huge motivator
Bro I always seem to hit new PRs when I'm the most shitty/tired feeling or unprepared, and go in thinking today I'm just gonna take it easy and feeling down about my bad habits... and then I start lifting and... huh, this feels lighter today let's send it lmao
@@TomoHawKzZ haha it’s interesting how psychology plays into the lifts, and differently for everyone!

Austin's hands were so off center for the bench, he stood no chance even with the lower weight. That's the biggest issue with lifting blind
Yes, I noticed the hands as well.
But they weren’t blind, they just didn’t have peripheral view.
@@valeaves Yeah, you don't need to look at both sides to be in the center of the bar. You should know where the center is just by looking at the bar/notching and adjust accordingly.

You can tell people if they’re uneven or not. That’s not an issue when the bar has markers on it. Or a spotter who can see. Lol

My spine started hurting watching the 2 guys deadlift, holy cow
It is a lot of weight, but don't worry - it's a powerlifting phenomenon called thoractic rounding. It's the rounding of your upper back rather than your lumbar, so your back can handle heavier loads without causing too much strain. It's better than keeping a straight back.
Thoractic mid to upper back rounding is a thing. But that was definitely lower back rounding there. Granted that even little rounding on the lower end can be beneficial on rare max deadlift occasions, but you must control and recognise the limits there. That 205 was definitely scared cat rounding and just pulling with everything you got. That will do harm and on the long run cause severe issues. Romanian deadlifts are one of the best full body excercises out there, but the technique is hard to master and you definitely should recognise your limits and leave the ego out of the door. @@kevinbae2388
Better work on that glassback
There’s nothing wrong with their deadlift
thoracic rounding is ok tbh
if i squatted like noelle did my back would snap in half
long femur, same for me but I'm trying to work on my ankle mobility
to go deeper and touch more quadriceps, rly hard the back squat for long femur:(
she kinda has to with those mile long femurs. I have the same issue and actually I have developed back issues.
It's completely fine.
Would be beneficial for her to squat in heeled shoes or on plates to elevate the heel. Also cursed with long ass femurs.
Actually insanely impressive
Great concept. Can’t wait to see how you develop it over time. Hope a series of this comes!!
I'm new to weight lifting and fitness in general. I'm about a year in and I still doubt what I can accomplish. My coach (who I've been with the entire time) now loads my bar for PRs because I get into my head so badly. I've been able to lift weight that still feels unimaginable! It's literally all in your head and being confident in the lift!
*whispers* this is like psychologically violating them... but I love it

If I'm ever feeling like a lazy piece of shit, I always motivate myself by not allowing myself to watch one of Will's videos without working out first. He has really been a huge influence on my fitness journey! :)
Thats so nice 💝
I feel like I’d be a little stronger blindfolded, because without I tend to get in my head abit and think “oh that’s too risky I shouldn’t go higher”
But also I workout alone at home so I don’t have a spotter, knowing I have a spotter there (along with not knowing the exact weight) is definitely going to push me.
It's kinda hard to keep yourfelf balanced.
Bth man I wanna say a huge thank you for motivationg me to get into fitness, I've never felt myself so good like after a good workout, now I'm even trying to film my home workouts to help more people who doesn't have access to gym! Hope to become a fitness influencer too one day
Variables left open:
- Lifting Standards were not set (see the 'attempt' at 6:51). Without setting standards you cannot compare lifts...
- Mindset: Some people believe in their abilities more than others. Maybe the woman is in genereal rather underestimating her abilities and therefore did limit her PRs before. Perhabs her old Squat PR was RPE 6
- Obviously the progress since their last PR is significant for this experiment. How hard did they train and how much time passed since their last PR? Especially because you chose rather Novice to early intermediate lifters who can progress quite fast
- Lifting habits are modified due to blindfold, reduced hype, being forced to lift at a given time. Calm lifters might profit from this atmosphere, hype lifters might be affected in a negative way
That opera Note Hold was AMAZING!!! Crazy skills!
To make it easier next time, instead of putting sunglasses on, just put trash bags over the plates.
They were told it is about focus, trash bags wouldn't achieve that.
@@nesciusplaygroundyeah. I think not concealing the identity of the test would’ve made them perform better. They all seem to be nervous for the blindfold and focus part
bro, when people on your videos say lbs - can you put an on screen KG equivalent, I'm forever googling lbs kgs when I'm watching your stuff.
In junior high I had plateaued at the same exact bench press for months. We were maxing out, my coach told me to close my eyes and take a deep breath, and he told the guys to add a 2.5 to each side and then told me to open my eyes and lift. After lifting I saw they added a 10 to each side and it was easy. I continued to have gains after that
Hishams squat form is on point, really impressive, great bar path and depth
The quality of these videos is something else. Its amazing 🔥 I accidentally went up in leg press because my math didnt work properly 💀
I love when Will enters the room everyone runs away like he's captured them.
Noel popping out of nowhere 7:31 really had me cracking 😂
Lateral raises while blindfolded would be crazy
Why?
No one cares about lateral raise pr tho lol
Will would’ve loved graduate school and the IRB process. This could be a really great case study, especially if it was double-blinded and the contestants were in different rooms or went one-by one.
This is how a physical therapist tore a ligament in my shoulder, by not telling me he was giving me 10 lbs more than I was able to lift
Not being scared of weight is what gave me a scar on my face
If it's with a spotter or safeties, my sense of self preservation is gone
even when she was blind she still hit that handshake
Emotional state greatly effects strength. The easiest one that gives most people strength is to get angry. You get angry at the weight, and decide you'll do what it takes to move that POS, it'll usually move. But if you have structural limitations, as in pain, don't push past it. Fix that ish, and then get mad at a quarter of a ton.
The 3rd guys posture was terrible for the deadlift, his shoulders were rounded over before he put any load on them. You want to keep your shoulders flat like you're standing if you can, to protect your rotator cuffs and upper back.
i thought you wouldve mixed up who was lifting heavier or lighter for each lift. would give more data
11:23 the famous turkey handclap, where the fist meets the flat hand..
😬 love your content as always
Catchball!
Will is now also a scientist , is there anything this man can’t do ???
Yes, create a better experiment. He’s definitely not a scientist, not yet.
swim hahaha
I think heavier for the girl, the same for the shorter gent, lighter for the taller gent.
I don't think she's usually really going as hardcore with heavy lifts, so a heavier weight (even a PR) can still be very easily lifted (those deadlifts looked like a light warmup), except for bench where a small increase in weight is a lot for someone who isn't lifting a tonne of weight overall. I think the taller gent was in his head, and struggling with other things, and then on the deadlifts in particular it was very easy.
Oh they guessed what I'm guessing lol.
Yay, everyone is right!
Could fill the ends of an olympic barbell with cement...
Then the lighter person gets a fake weight added to the mix.
Certainly a lot of variables here, but ultimately they were all correct with their guesses either way so whatever.
It would be impractical just for this video but custom made barbells with the weight difference built-in would be perfect for an experiment. Or maybe an opaque 3D printed cylinder to cover the plates. No need for blindfold/glasses. Love that line at the end - "What you give power to, has power over you." Great video!
That Noel edit at 7:33 made me feel things I haven't felt since my dad left to buy milk
Dude Will put out so much unique creative and original video concepts man. GOAT!
Played in a rock band with Noelle back in highschool, can confirm she rocks! Glad you're still killin it Noelle!
Noelle’s goodmorning squat hybrid scared me that has to be harder than if she kept her back up
She has very long femurs, makes it really difficult (or impossible) to maintain an upright position.
I was noticing the same thing but I was going over in my head how she could fix it...I'm now realizing I have some of the same issue and its probably why squat is my worst lift.
It doesn't work like that, you can't just keep your back up if you have long femurs, short shinebone and also the length of your torso makes a big difference. But squat shoes would maybe benefit her
If she squatted upright, she would fall backwards. When your legs are long, you have to squat like that to keep the bar over your foot. If she rounded her back or her hips came up first, that would be more concerning
i think bench is the most mentally challenging because you cant see the thing that could literally fall on your face
Always a great day when Will Tennyson uploads.👌
Other commenters are saying the same thing but I accidentally squatted 445x2 instead of 425x2 the other day and it felt like 425 to me mentally. I think the key is, when you're going for a heavy lift, treat all your warm up sets like they're a max. So your mindset and routine should not change regardless of the weight on the bar. I think that eliminates the mental variable
more videos like these would be awesome. it makes a big difference seeing multiple people at different stages or places testing things out
If you pause at 18:12 you can clearly see why he failed that bench, his right hand is way more narrow. I'm betting the horse blinder glasses made it pretty hard to get an even grip.
Wow! Your videos are getting so high quality Will!

takeaway: if you doubt yourself, go in blind. if you are competitive, seeing the challenge hypes you up.
Personally, I find when I don’t think I’m gonna have a good workout (if I’m tired or not feeling it) then I end up having a great session and vice-versa.
Are we gonna talk about how good the 3rd guys squat form was?
Confirms what I already knew: women are stronger than they think/are told they are.
Woman do sell themselves short all the time. While man oversell theirs reason why man have more deaths in the bench press
No they generally don't train as hard test creates more drive I rarely ever see women go anywhere close to failure in the gym .
Actually there is a big psychological study, that proofs that women perform worse when you tell them there are not as good as men in a topic :) So in my opinion its so stupid that in sport we focus so much about the fact, that men are stronger and faster in average. Women can achive a lot and be pretty good. You also would never tell somebody „yeah have fun running, but you will never be as good as a profi athlet“ when they start a sport. I think we should stop that and focus on what we can do 👍
Bro, you have a one sample statistic with 3 tests, 1 failed and 2 succeeded with something like 4% increase over the perceived PR. And she felt it was heavier.
@@williambrinkmeier1772 Maybe we should not take our own observations as facts. First of all if it was true maybe the part that women get told they a weak influence the training intensity from women a lot. Second of all you only see a small part of women training. And also how close they go to failure is just an guess you take. There are humans that step over their limits and dont express that much and other people that are far away from their limits and already screaming etc (just look at the expression of pain in for example Art sports like dancing. A lot of times the when the dancers fall pretty hard and even breaking their leg etc they just stand up and continue. But i football for example they cry very early) so actually its hard to see from the outside if someone is really going to their limits
Everyone's talking about Noelle's squat but no one gonna mention those cat back deads?!
I have been a personal trainer now for over 7 years, I've done a similar experiment with probably 60 different people. Never to this much production but constantly adding weight to the bar without my clients knowledge because they always psych themselves out.
In my experience, women vastly underestimate what they are capable of. Whereas men are either spot on or overestimate their abilities. The older than man the more accurate they seem to be, where the young men overestimate more. But women almost always underestimated themselves.
Once I had a girl hit a 20lb 1rm on deadlift because she didn't know how much weight was on the bar. There were outliers for sure in every category but in general this is what I found to be true. At the end of the day every person is different.
I'd love for you to do this video again but with more people and personality types.
Hisham definitely had the best form on his squat
Definitely on Squat I would be stronger, I always psych myself out on squat
All their forms sucked.
them letting each other know how it went for them might of affected the results
Good job Noelle! If you don’t have a coach already working on your form, consider chatting with someone. Looks like you’re lifting a lot with your back on those squats and if you can lift more with your legs I think you’ll keep getting PRs for awhile. You def have a lot more potential with the squat! Nice work.

I remember when I had a work out partner he would throw extra weights on the bar when I wasn’t looking and I legit pushed weight I thought I could push.
Its a Mindset -Dr Rick de la Stick
I'm really glad you did this. I have been saying this for a long time. It would be awesome to see people lift random objects without knowing the weight.
If you do something similar again, I definitely think that a better way to hide the weight would be using some kind of board to block the line of sight from the rack, like a larger round piece of wood that can be slid over the same place where the weights are, rather than the glasses. I'm pretty sure people could see the weight during the deadlift and bench.
Really cool concept though and a great video! Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Keep up the great work will. Love the content.
A buddy of mine spent weeks trying to bench 135, yet would fail every time because he was so up in his head about seeing the "big" plates on each side. One day, I loaded the bar up with 135 using smaller plates, without telling him how much weight I'd put on. Guess what? He was able to press it. So much of weightlifting is mental.

Time to remove my glasses and go blind
This was cool. Thanks dude. I’m definitely motivated to blindfold and walk around the gym. Sort of a “shock the muscles” and “shock the other people” approach. Unknown machine, unknown weight, just grabbing other peoples water and protein shakes. This is gonna be a blast. Update to follow……😂 jk.
Love the content!!!!!
It’s crazy cause this happened to me when I was doing leg curls I thought I lowered the weight like 15 ib but I was still doing the full stack and it felt light asf
This needs to be done repeatedly with more people. A single test could be affected by their mental state, how they feel that day, or even what they're wearing. If this is done with a larger sample size, we could get an idea if mind over matter really is a thing.
