The finale episode of our Ladakh Food Series features a captivating journey through the heart of Leh Old Town with our expert host, Dr. Rigzin, who is a researcher, a proud local and fellow foodie. She took us to some of her favourite eateries in this part of the magestic city that have grown into local favourite stops.
Nestled within a restored Ladakhi building, Lala’s Café offers an ideal spot to indulge in a cup of coffee or snacks. It is run by the Tibetan Heritage Fund who restored this old house and turned it into an art gallery cum cafe. Yutaka Hirako, one of the members of THF briefed us about the initiative. Apart from the cosy sitting area on the first floor the terrace for breathtaking views of the Leh Palace. Unfortunately the limited menu was exhausted by that time so we had to return empty handed but the place is worth a visit.
The second stop was Brothers Barbecue Hut. It is a small barbecue stall run by a brother from Jammu. They offer a limited range of freshly grilled kebabs. We tried the mutton and chicken seekh kebab with rumali roti and chutney. With a great marination and a succulent and meaty texture, the mutton kebab was the best.
The third stop of this tour was Bismillah Restaurant. This humble no frills eatery is renowned for their pocket friendly everyday meals among which the mutton curry rice combo is Riggin's absolute favourite. Prepared in the Kashmiri style, the rich and flavourful mutton curry was satisfying, especially mixed with rice. Anubhav also tried some rajma rice as rajma is his most favourite veg dish. This place is a hidden gem.
The fourth stop was Kharlam Cafe and Restaurant. This small and cosy eatery run by Lobzang and her family is a must visit place because of their warm and genial nature and great homestyle food that is freshly prepared right when one orders it. We tried the veg and mutton shapta among which the veg one was more tasty. The heartfelt gesture of her giving some roasted barley to Anubhav to eat while traveling is another example of Ladakhi hospitality and warmth.
The fifth stop was Gulam Bhai's restaurant. When we reached there the shutter was down as the place is only open for lunch. Since Rigzin jad informed him about our late arrival, he had reserved some of the day's menu for us. This included his bestsellers chicken pola, mutton mok mok and clear lamb soup. The pulao was mildly spiced and mok mok was juicy. However the clear lamb broth without any seasoning other than salt was a revelation.
The final stop was Sugar House bakery where we ended the tour with a luscious apricot cheesecake. Apricots hold an important place in Ladakhi cuisine. This cheesecake was a delightful addition to the list of apricot based dishes as it blends the essence of Ladakh with the indulgence of a classic dessert. Overall this tour was a special one.

Very well made series of Leh. The simplicity of the food and people is the takeaway. The co-host Rigzin Chodon seemed knowledgeable about her backyard eateries. Good job all of you.
Indigenous people of north east and extreme north are really very innocent and warm!
Mindblowing Series Sirji...Simply It was Informative, delicious and realistic...🙏👍💐❤️
The 'Leh food walk' series was too good and highly knowledgeable as well ..kudos to you Mr Sapra 👌 came to know about so many things which I never knew existed.
My husband used to visit Ladhak,Leh,Khardungla and nearby areas but that was a long time ago ..He watched all the episodes.
Great work..All the best
Great to see, I wish these could be shown all over the UK in English and more were interesting in learning about our Asian nephews as so many came to Britain over the years bringing so much great food and vibrant traditional colours.
With food like this what's not to love? Its a shame most Brits want pools and all inclusive holidays, places like this are where I'd love to go. It always amazes me, people in these areas are used to the diverse and tasty food so think its normal. When I came to Nepal I was blow away by the great food so its like gora torture seeing this as I just want to come so much 😂👍😋😋
Could not find most of the locations. Today last day In Leh..would be kind if you can share google locationd. Kharlam location is available....are other places close by too ?

In Central Asia there's a similar dish to Shabaley called Cheburek, with meat/chicken/potato stuffing.
