Sizwheel, this is how i understand it.

  • Sizwheel style undercut is used to control a hard leaning tree. The fibers on the tension side were supposed to tear away from the backside of the stump rather than breaking.
    Stihl MS461 with 28" bar.
    Rakers were taken down to far with my first 2 in 1 file guide. She was way to hungry in this video!!!

    I love the honest assessment. So much learning! I noticed the Dutchmen right away, but thought it might work out anyway with that crazy notch! Nice 👍

    good explanation on this. i've seen it done but have never been walked through the mechanics of the cut. it's a good one to know in case a guy needs it someday. keep the vids coming. thanks

    Great explanation! Seems the face cut is a bit too deep IMO. Also that saw seems to be struggling… may need a bark box or a M-tronic reset? My 400c would bust that out no problem 😎

      Kyler Monares yes logger wade offers a lot but if only I could hear what he is saying (strong accent ) and better caméra work would help us all . we all need advice

    I don't see the purpose of the chunk cut away. seems to me the big thing is the wedge shaped hinge. the thick back of it is against the lean and stops the lean taking control so the tree falls 'sideways' - i.e. the way you want it to - under the influence of that much of the centre of gravity that is on that side. the influence of the centre of gravity that is 'forward' - i.e. on the lean side - is counteracted, 'stopped', by the thick wedge shaped hinge, the thick bit being, as said, at the 'back' of the lean, the tension side.
    So that being the case where's the usefulness of the chunk cut away?

    I dont know if this helps or not, but using the sizwheel/siswheel on hard up hill leaning trees could lead to a bad barber chair. Hard leaners are best with a bore cut. Stay safe

    • @silverbullag4759
      @silverbullag4759 3 года назад

      In the scenario of the video,barber chair is very unlikely as the cuts were 90 degree to the lean,hinge ripping out with the weight is more likely, but a bore cut when felling with the weight certainly

      That's what I was thinking. I also believe that saw is not tuned up to max rpm. May not need to be but it did sound as if it could have delivered more RPM at times....

    an (additional) scarf cut on the lower part of the face cut might allow more free fall before the face cut closes, so that the holding wood holds for a slightly longer time.

  • @mattc8054
    @mattc8054 7 лет назад +2

    Just a tip losen that chain up quite a bit. Saws having a hard time pulling it and you'll burn up bars like nobody's business

    • @slyclyde2900

  • @northmanlogging2769

    good job, just a bit of advice... when trying this the wide part of the face, I.E. the hold side, needs to be one smooth surface, avoid nicking and gouging it, it will pretty much always fail at a nick or gouge, secondly try if you can to use a root swell as the hold side, gives maximum fiber. stay safe.

      its one of those tricks that when it works its slick, but I wouldn't count on it in a high risk situation. Its half science half magick

    Advice; score the tree lightly ( bark deep) around your undercut to see if your cuts line up before committing to the cut. Ajust as needed.

    Hello. Nice video. And clearly by the technique you are influenced by 'Tarzan. He's a great faller at his age. Now the technique. I saw that you didnt match the siz-cut with your humbolt. Then your fibres doesnt do what you like. I like to clear the bark just to see my cut better. On these trees there are thick bark on it. Thats my thought.... I'm not that a good faller my self but I do get my trees where I want. Have a good day ;)

    • @relyk90
      @relyk90  7 лет назад

      MTM Skogservice AS Yeah maybe the first vertical cut of the Siz not matching the felling cut had something to do with the fibers not tearing away. I'm thinking more that the tree wasent leaning hard enough for it to work. There's another tree with a harder lean that I'm gonna try it on. I'll clear the bark away so I can match my cuts up perfect. I have a really hard time with the humbolt. Just need more practice. And a chain that isn't to hungry!!!!

  • @ianmartin7283
    @ianmartin7283 7 лет назад +1

    with the humboldt do you first cut like you were but were you come up keep the bar at the same angle but just point the nose down. i learned that from the guy up in bc. cant remember his channel name. been doing my humboldts perfect ever since

    Late to the party but I have watched a few videos on this technique & it seems that a smaller side cut gets better results. What have you learned in the last four years?

  • @fustratedfisher
    @fustratedfisher 5 лет назад +2

    Great demo video, sounds like you took a little to much off the rakers and it's stalling the chain. If that's the problem. I hate it when I'm cutting and I have to fight with the saw. One of my pet peeves cuz its my own fault. Thanks for making the vid.

    Just so we're on the same page, or chapter at least, can you tell ushow a "face cut" became an "undercut" and how the "hinge" became "holding wood"? (Yes, I understand that the guys up in BC butcher Funk & Wagnalls that way- not an excuse.) Eschew fuzzy thinking. :')

    That face-cut was Ugly! Exactly how I do em when I try for that humboldt cut.... I have ended up with the face cut so deep after 'cleaning it up' that I'm amazed the tree is still standing on it's own. I just keep on practicing and sticking to my masters studies at RUclips University.

    😏 Lange niemand gesehen der so wenig Ahnung von Baumfällung hat. Säge läuft nicht richtig, falsche Einstellung? Schwert vielleicht doch zu lang? Leistung der Säge nicht ausreichend für die Schwertlänge. Fallkerb viel zu tief und nachgesägt! Keine Profi Arbeit. Ich hoffe, Du verletzt Dich nicht, bei dem was Du da tust.
