    The rusty color of the water is an indicator that not all of the thermite ignited properly, because ic fell into the water and got wet. Use another container, so that everything can ignite before ic gets onto the ice.

    • @charlesbritannia7719
      @charlesbritannia7719 7 лет назад +46

      The rust colour can indeed be an indicator that not everything reacted properly, however thermite getting wet should not stop the reaction as thermite burns even underwater. Maybe it was just not mixed properly?

    • @pelham4au
      @pelham4au 7 лет назад +27

      Charles Britannia it might be able to burn underwater if the aluminum point and iron oxide is kept together in a container, but the different density of the two materials probably made it separate when it hit the water which would stop the reaction

    • @ulfvonweimuller4433
      @ulfvonweimuller4433 7 лет назад +9

      You are probably right. Excessive amount of water may shut down the reaction. Nevertheles, thermite is used for underwater welding too. My guess is that after it went throught the bucket, it shattered in too small "units" surrounded by water and then the reaction stopped.

    • @pelham4au
      @pelham4au 7 лет назад +3

      Ulf von Weißmüller that's what I was trying to say, my explanation was just poor thank you for clarifying

    • @silianfrische696
      @silianfrische696 7 лет назад +11

      Klaufmann Thermite is a so called "redox-reaction", which means it doesnt need any other oxgen as all is provided by the thermite.This means it cant be stopped by water. Mr. Bonds guess was probably right as the two would surely have diluted, causing the reaction to stop. Thermite is chemically speaken Fe2O3+Al->AlO3+2Fe (plz correct me if Im wrong) which means there is Iron left over, explaining the red water as it is more likely to react with oxygen when it is hotter. But one thing I dont get is why he thought he was going to get an explosion. When igniting thermite there is no explosion. Never.
      Sincerely your Nerd

      Yeah, for about hundred years - during the time when the tzar's army went all the way to Paris.
      But thousands of years before that, Finland wasn't part of Russia. Russia introduced us some legislation, though there's more similarity with Sweden who ruled longer in Finland. Language got surprisingly little Russian. It is pretty different language.
      Sweden affected Finland more profoundly, 400 or 700 years depending which part of Finland we talk about.
      But even that time didn't change us Swedes, even the language remained, though loads of loan words came from or through Swedish. Nowadays new words come mostly through English.

    • @Gookrak
      @Gookrak 7 лет назад +2

      English with finnish accent sounds very similar to english with hungarian accent. Hearing people speaking finnish reminds of hungarian, too (the rhythm, the "music" of the language etc.) but you don't understand the words. It's a strange, yet warm feeling. (Comment has nothing to do with the geopolitics content above, it's just a personal opinion)

    If you want the thermite to explode on ice, you have to pour the burning thermite onto the ice. You can achieve that by starting the burning process inside a pot above the ice and once its burning pour it on the ice. The key is, that, the 2500°C hot thermite vaporizes the ice so fast, that the expansion of the gas causes an explosion.

  • @Zer0Mem0ry
    @Zer0Mem0ry 7 лет назад

    The water being full of rusty iron particles means that the reaction failed, it probably got wet and that's the biggest problem.
    You should use a big flowerpot instead, and then place the flowerpot on a stand so that it's not in a direct contact with the ice, this way the thermite can melt through the flowerpot and fall through the bottom, without letting any moisture inside. This can be done using e.g two bricks and placing the flowerpot on top of them so that a little cavity is left between the bricks which on top the flowerpot sits on.
    Also you should calculate the amount of used Ironoxide and aluminium to get a perfect quantity for each element.
    Fe2O3 (s) + 2 Al (s) → Al2O3 (s) + 2 Fe (s)

    A ceramic pot with a hole in the bottom or some bricks surrounding the thermite container would help contain the reaction if you intend to bore a hole. Recommended setup in my opinion would be a ceramic pot sitting on some bricks arranged to form a not quite closed square form that is just larger than the hole in the bottom of the pot. this is so the the molten metal can flow out of the pot and be contained by the bricks while in contact with the ice but not still leave room for steam to escape.

    • @NickRoman
      @NickRoman 7 лет назад +1

      They could use a pot, fill it, then put a slightly larger pot on top to cover it and still have a hole for ignition. Then use some kind of metal clamps or tie something around to hold the top pot on. So, it would jet out of the top and bottom and/or the whole thing would explode. How about that?

  • @thatnewguy1579

    As marcus eckhardt said, you need to use a plant pot of some sort to concentrate the thermite to one place. The bucket melted so the thermite just dissolved in the water

    Hey guys, great videos you make! Thermite is not to explode. It's for welding big stuff like train tracks. The workers are standing almost next to it, only meters away. It just burns, melting the steel by a exotherm reaction of ironoxide and aluminum and a littlebit of magnesium, delivering melted iron (reduced iron oxide). It's not a bomb.

    Whether thermite burns through the ice depends on how long it burns, or how much you burn. It explodes if you put it in closed container, otherwise it burns. The best container to use would be a narrow cylinder of metal so it takes fairly long to burn up.

    Try building it like a thermic lance, take a long narrow steel pipe and fill it then light it from the bottom. that way all the heat is directed down and any molten iron from the iron oxide will hit a small spot instead of being thrown all over the lake

    If I remember correctly, thermite doesn't actually explode. The raction is sub-sonic, and it just combusts very fast. We made some in chemistry class, and it just shot fire into the air and dropped molten metal

    Try using a ceramic container, like a flower pot, preferably one with a hole in the bottom. Love the video! Keep up the good work.

    When you mix fuel, metal oxide and metal powder in just the right way, it burns at 2000 degrees Celsius. Hot enough to cut through nearly any barrier known to man. Throw some C4 into the mix, and you've got one hell of a combination.

    Use copper oxide instead of red iron oxide. Mix in a 6 to 4 ratio by weight. For ten grams of thermite, use 6 grams of copper and four grams aluminum powder. For 1 kilo, use 600 grams copper oxide and 400 grams aluminum. You can scale up or down as much as you want. This will be a much more powerful reaction, and will explode most violently.

    The reason it didn't explode is because thermite isn't an explosive. It just burns really hot. It is used for welding things like railroad tracks together.

    You might want to consider suspending the thermite portion up above the ice. Thermite will emit molten metal dripping down on the surface.... Of course, the more you use the better in your case. You basically soaked a lot of it that didn't go off. Watch railroad track welding videos how to use thermite. Great channel! I enjoy watching you guys!

    Heat goes up. The red hot steel worked because the heavy weight of the steel pressed down and forced the weight into the ice. The thermite put most of the heat into the air. Now if you built a fire-brick house around your thermite, it might work better.

    Hi. entertaining videos. Thx. Also, a note about your setup: the majority of the heat transfer is lost to the atmosphere. The mass decreases as the thermite is consumed in the reaction. Very quickly there is no force driving the mass into the lake and the heat is transferred, via convection, upwards and away from the lake. Place the thermite inside a steel tube with one end fixed towards the lake and you will have a show. Place the thermite inside a steel tube welded closed on each end and you will have your explosion.
