Cold as fuck at -20 eh? try coming to canada weve had winters here in ontario around -40 and somedays thats without wind chill lol
You should press the termite into a tube
The rusty color of the water is an indicator that not all of the thermite ignited properly, because ic fell into the water and got wet. Use another container, so that everything can ignite before ic gets onto the ice.
The rust colour can indeed be an indicator that not everything reacted properly, however thermite getting wet should not stop the reaction as thermite burns even underwater. Maybe it was just not mixed properly?
Charles Britannia it might be able to burn underwater if the aluminum point and iron oxide is kept together in a container, but the different density of the two materials probably made it separate when it hit the water which would stop the reaction
You are probably right. Excessive amount of water may shut down the reaction. Nevertheles, thermite is used for underwater welding too. My guess is that after it went throught the bucket, it shattered in too small "units" surrounded by water and then the reaction stopped.
Ulf von Weißmüller that's what I was trying to say, my explanation was just poor thank you for clarifying
Klaufmann Thermite is a so called "redox-reaction", which means it doesnt need any other oxgen as all is provided by the thermite. This means it cant be stopped by water. Mr. Bonds guess was probably right as the two would surely have diluted, causing the reaction to stop. Thermite is chemically speaken Fe2O3+Al->AlO3+2Fe (plz correct me if Im wrong) which means there is Iron left over, explaining the red water as it is more likely to react with oxygen when it is hotter. But one thing I dont get is why he thought he was going to get an explosion. When igniting thermite there is no explosion. Never.
Sincerely your Nerd
Thermonuclear device vs. frozen lake....?
The Russians tried that. There is no more lake.
In Soviet Russia lake is you!
Amperzand 😂
"we are in finland, not in rasa"
Miika Mäentaus 😂😂😂
My brother lives in Tampere.
why Finland people speak in Russian accent.
not really. While both are charming, Russian accents tend to have different shift. Like b"ah"ck becomes b"eh"ck. They do have a more choppy german sound (not quite there either it is a quite unique accent).
LOL
"the fish can attack at anytime so we must deal wit it"
*blows up fish with thermite
Try a big terracotta FlowerPot.Its better than Plastic.
YES this is way better!
And one with a big hole in the bottom would channel the molten iron straight to the ice. (source: Brainiac science abuse, I miss that show.)
Ben Carter i know right i used to go to their live shows in dubai
indeed. terracotta is the way to go. also maybe put the pot on an elevated stand so the pot doesn't go down with the melting ice, then you will just have a clean stream of molten iron.
You win, I'm jealous.
I find this channel more fun then the actual press channel.
Colin Sevier He has an actual press channel!? I always watch this because it's more interesting than presses...
he said that this channel gains lots of views than the main channel thats why they are posting here instead
yea I subscribe to this one, not the other
Colin Sevier yep
MAKE FINLAND GREAT AGAIN
24 degree celsius HPC guy vs thin ice!
I need to know if 24Celsius is hot enough, or do we have to make him even hotter.
human body temperature is around 35 - 37 degrees Celsius
it has never been not great ...
Yeah, for about hundred years - during the time when the tzar's army went all the way to Paris.
But thousands of years before that, Finland wasn't part of Russia. Russia introduced us some legislation, though there's more similarity with Sweden who ruled longer in Finland. Language got surprisingly little Russian. It is pretty different language.
Sweden affected Finland more profoundly, 400 or 700 years depending which part of Finland we talk about.
But even that time didn't change us Swedes, even the language remained, though loads of loan words came from or through Swedish. Nowadays new words come mostly through English.
English with finnish accent sounds very similar to english with hungarian accent. Hearing people speaking finnish reminds of hungarian, too (the rhythm, the "music" of the language etc.) but you don't understand the words. It's a strange, yet warm feeling. (Comment has nothing to do with the geopolitics content above, it's just a personal opinion)

How can people not know you're in Finland!? If I close my eyes, it sounds like Mika Hakkinen telling me about Thermite.
Gosh you guys are awesome. "Stand back! I'm going to science!"
Fun Fact: -40 Celsius is same temperature as -40 Fahrenheit.

Thermite doesn't "explode" it just burns super hot like homemade lava almost It does not expload
Zach Evans I think I remmenber the mythbusters making an explosion by burning thermiteon a block of ice
Zach Evans oh it does explode really well, you just need to keep it in a container that can build up some pressure
Karavusk No, the Mythbusters just put thermite in a bucket on ice and it exploded. No pressure
It probably was a metal bucket, it can still provide more resistance compared to the plastic bucket from this video
Karavusk no your both wrong the thermite is meant to explode by boiling so much water, the steam pressure creates and explosion.
basically anything explodes if you pack it into a pipe
Thermite doesn't really explode. It does burns profusely and insanely hot.
Tyrian3k it only explodes in certain conditions and the Windows of those are very tiny
Tyrian3k dude not the thermite explode .... its just the water that is boiling so fast that makes a huge pressure in a short time...
But isn't that functionally similar enough to warrant it being called the same thing as slang or colloquially?
What the dudesons are doing there? :D
We were filming some other stuff with them on that day. Go check their channel out there is really cool gladiator fight video :D
Which is?
Just search for Dudesons and you'll find it.
Nice one. :D

If you want the thermite to explode on ice, you have to pour the burning thermite onto the ice. You can achieve that by starting the burning process inside a pot above the ice and once its burning pour it on the ice. The key is, that, the 2500°C hot thermite vaporizes the ice so fast, that the expansion of the gas causes an explosion.
These videos are just fucking nice. Never clickbait, just as promised in the title and thumbnail. Also entertaining as hell. Good work!
Is that HP and Jarppi ?
A big fucking hole coming right up!
ProjectiluvOP I was waiting for the R6S refrence somewhere
I bet it will go through! Love the vids guys you seem like you have a lot of fun!
Love your work, greetings from Iceland!
What is with dudesons? I saw them
PauL They said in an earlier video that there aren't a lot of big Finnish channels like them, so since they feel like they make similar material they'd start hanging out more often.
MAKING A NEW DOOR!
It's even more fun to watch this video with the closed captions on.
Some of what comes up is hilarious!
Love these types of vids! Keep up the good work guys!!
US government approves :D
You sound like gold member from Austin Powers. Instead of "i am from Holland" it's just Finland
It doesnt matter what you two guys post on here. Wether it be a fail funny or a success i love watching the vids and seeing what you get upto. SO SO FUNNY
I watch from the Washington DC area. Wonderful videos, great narration. Keep up the good work.
Under 10 million squad assemble 🙃
logan thompson lol 9,999,999 people come to you.
i love you guys. everything you do is kewl.
This is a great channel just like your regular press channel. You should do this channel in 4k since its a lot of cool stuff out side with good lighting.
Great videos, love them.
Hey, look at that; I'm one of the first 300.
It's not actually that big of deal, I apologize.

use FeO (ironoxide) + Cu(copper). watch the video from cody's lab.
Mdsoebee No you mean CuO (Copper oxide) and Al (Aluminium Powder). Copper would not work as reduction agent because it is to noble.
Mdsoebee yeah copper oxide is a better oxidizer I believe
That slow mo is pretty cool! looks beautiful there
Your exposure on the slow motion footage was spot on!
Really like all the videos you two make! First thing that came to my mind when I saw this vid was I hope that's environmentally safe for the lake so thanks for doing some research
excellent music you chose!!
I really have to say, you two are like ice and thermite. You're always cool and composed, and your wife is bright and funny. I laugh every time she does the scared face in the opening.
I hope this channel grows to be larger than HPC is today. The content is much more diverse.
That was frigging AWESOME!
Famous last words, "Lets go have a look."
I love your videos, keep up the good work. You English is fantastic by the way.
This. Is. AWESOME!!!
Really cool how the high speed camera picks up and shows the reflection of the sun in the ice crystals in the snow, tinkling daaarkness!
Best channel I rate 11/10
"What the fuck, that should have exploded!" -Famous last words.
In the mythbusters version of this they are dressed in fireproof suits and hide behind plexiglass. In Finland you just run away to a 'safe distance'. :D
TheStupidcomment yea
I love watching you and Anni!
These flames in slow motion are beautiful.
" -I wonder, where are...
- We are in Finland!"
Perfect timing! ^^
I'm starting to think Frozen Lake is the final boss.
+Beyond the press
I really like your videos and I just wanted to say that you are the nicest couple on RUclips!
Subscribed!
You guys are so fun!
I can't get enough of your accents!!
When in doubt, just get five or six times as much thermite. This wisdom can be applied to any aspect of life.
The water being full of rusty iron particles means that the reaction failed, it probably got wet and that's the biggest problem.
You should use a big flowerpot instead, and then place the flowerpot on a stand so that it's not in a direct contact with the ice, this way the thermite can melt through the flowerpot and fall through the bottom, without letting any moisture inside. This can be done using e.g two bricks and placing the flowerpot on top of them so that a little cavity is left between the bricks which on top the flowerpot sits on.
Also you should calculate the amount of used Ironoxide and aluminium to get a perfect quantity for each element.
Fe2O3 (s) + 2 Al (s) → Al2O3 (s) + 2 Fe (s)
Even though you had no explosion, your high-speed camera footage looks awesome. Cheers!
Now THAT'S what I wanted to see.
Best channel on RUclips.
I honestly like this "B-channel" way better than HPC. There's much more variety in content, which I mostly enjoy. Thanks for forcing this channel up on me!
I love how upset you were that it didn't explode. fucking golden reaction, mate.
"No!! What the f**k?! That should explode!" Laughed so hard I could barely breathe for 10 minutes. Adorable.
Best valentine's video I've seen this year ^_^
The fish must all swim to the other side of the lake as soon as they notice these guys coming.
A ceramic pot with a hole in the bottom or some bricks surrounding the thermite container would help contain the reaction if you intend to bore a hole. Recommended setup in my opinion would be a ceramic pot sitting on some bricks arranged to form a not quite closed square form that is just larger than the hole in the bottom of the pot. this is so the the molten metal can flow out of the pot and be contained by the bricks while in contact with the ice but not still leave room for steam to escape.
They could use a pot, fill it, then put a slightly larger pot on top to cover it and still have a hole for ignition. Then use some kind of metal clamps or tie something around to hold the top pot on. So, it would jet out of the top and bottom and/or the whole thing would explode. How about that?
As marcus eckhardt said, you need to use a plant pot of some sort to concentrate the thermite to one place. The bucket melted so the thermite just dissolved in the water
excellent ,yes we need more and more lol great job .
This isn't over yet, go back with more!
love this couple subscribed
Hey guys, great videos you make! Thermite is not to explode. It's for welding big stuff like train tracks. The workers are standing almost next to it, only meters away. It just burns, melting the steel by a exotherm reaction of ironoxide and aluminum and a littlebit of magnesium, delivering melted iron (reduced iron oxide). It's not a bomb.
Why does this not have more views? This is youtube gold!
Brilliant
Fish: oh, for crying out loud. honey! we're moving!
at the beginning of the video... YES the thermite will go through. i am going to watch it go through now.
'Add more stuff until you get explosion'
Subbed. This guy is a progressive thinker.
Whether thermite burns through the ice depends on how long it burns, or how much you burn. It explodes if you put it in closed container, otherwise it burns. The best container to use would be a narrow cylinder of metal so it takes fairly long to burn up.
Try building it like a thermic lance, take a long narrow steel pipe and fill it then light it from the bottom. that way all the heat is directed down and any molten iron from the iron oxide will hit a small spot instead of being thrown all over the lake
Is it just me or does the sound of you walking on snow send shivers up my spine???
Unterarzt Thats your ASMR then.
Unterarzt
if it's a bad feeling then it misophonia not asmr
big difference
i love this :)
"just add more stuff until you get explosion" i think thats a nice slogan
If I remember correctly, thermite doesn't actually explode. The raction is sub-sonic, and it just combusts very fast. We made some in chemistry class, and it just shot fire into the air and dropped molten metal
Try using a ceramic container, like a flower pot, preferably one with a hole in the bottom. Love the video! Keep up the good work.
I fucking love this channel.
love it
When you mix fuel, metal oxide and metal powder in just the right way, it burns at 2000 degrees Celsius. Hot enough to cut through nearly any barrier known to man. Throw some C4 into the mix, and you've got one hell of a combination.
-Jordan "Thermite" Trace
Use copper oxide instead of red iron oxide. Mix in a 6 to 4 ratio by weight. For ten grams of thermite, use 6 grams of copper and four grams aluminum powder. For 1 kilo, use 600 grams copper oxide and 400 grams aluminum. You can scale up or down as much as you want. This will be a much more powerful reaction, and will explode most violently.
Your neighbors chuckle when you say 'get 3 to 10 times more of this stuff' is like "Fuck yeah! I get to see this shit again!"
Nuclear missile vs. frozen lake next!
This is gonna be cool

The reason it didn't explode is because thermite isn't an explosive. It just burns really hot. It is used for welding things like railroad tracks together.
You might want to consider suspending the thermite portion up above the ice. Thermite will emit molten metal dripping down on the surface.... Of course, the more you use the better in your case. You basically soaked a lot of it that didn't go off. Watch railroad track welding videos how to use thermite. Great channel! I enjoy watching you guys!
Heat goes up. The red hot steel worked because the heavy weight of the steel pressed down and forced the weight into the ice. The thermite put most of the heat into the air. Now if you built a fire-brick house around your thermite, it might work better.
Hi. entertaining videos. Thx. Also, a note about your setup: the majority of the heat transfer is lost to the atmosphere. The mass decreases as the thermite is consumed in the reaction. Very quickly there is no force driving the mass into the lake and the heat is transferred, via convection, upwards and away from the lake. Place the thermite inside a steel tube with one end fixed towards the lake and you will have a show. Place the thermite inside a steel tube welded closed on each end and you will have your explosion.
That was cool.
"Hey, you know that guy wit the hydraulic press?"
"Yeah, what about him?"
"He has set the lake on fire"
