The Institute of International Studies at UC Berkeley has named distinguished jurist Richard Goldstone, a former justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, as the 2011 Sanford Elberg Lecturer. Justice Goldstone gave a public lecture on February 17, 2011 on "International Law and Human Rights: The Search for Justice." The lecture took place from 4-6 p.m. in Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall.

In addition to service on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Justice Goldstone served as the first chief prosecutor of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, and he was chairman of the UN Commission on the Gaza conflict.

Established in 1987 by the Institute of International Studies in honor of Sanford S. Elberg, Emeritus Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Emeritus Dean of the Graduate Division, the Elberg lectureship was endowed with contributions primarily from Dean Elberg's Berkeley colleagues. It honors his tireless efforts and substantial achievements in building the excellence of graduate education at Berkeley, including his support for international studies.
