It's probably because this show took place inside where the sound had a space to reverberate. I was at the Stanford (outdoor) show and he sounded amazing but in the videos of the performance, his voice somewhat gets lost in the sound of the crowd.

hate to break it to you, but i've spent a lot of time on the road with bands and music artists doing audio work for them. the 89% in this video isn't the audience singing, but instead a backing track. joji can't hit high notes as often as people think. for example the chorus, there is a high pitched and a standard monotone vocal. joji sings the monotone vocal while the high pitched vocal plays behind him.

Also, his earlier works as Pink Guy are satire and are linked to one of his youtube persona. You could listen to it if you are in the mood for a comedy-meme album. Its kind of hard to listen to though. If interested you could watch Shawn Cee's (reupload) reaction to it to get a gist of it. People probably get annoyed at him not hitting all the high notes but I like the effect of the backing track doing the notes high and him singing low. It sounds really nice. Octaves are cool lol.

He's just not that good of a singer as people make him out to be. I'm aware that he likes to sing, produce music and such but it doesn't mean he has the voice for it. As heard in this video, his range is very small, he sings monotonously and doesn't even seem to cover at least an octave of range. He's only a decent singer but nothing to write home about.

For a concert you do not have to jump around all hyped. Just walking left and right is way more than enough, because the people came to hear you sing live, not jump around on stage. But of course, you cannot really jump around in hype with this kind of music.

He used to do that on Slow Dancing in the Dark on previous tours. The crowd was screaming the words so loud in the moment it didn't even matter.
