  • Tomb of Queen Maeve - Knocknarea - County Sligo - Ireland
    GPS coordinates: 54 ° 16'13.5 "N 8 ° 35'05.4" W (parking)
It is actually a prehistoric cairn located at the top of Knocknarea Mountain.
This cairn is a gigantic pile of stones more than 10 m high. This one contains a tomb.
Legend has it that it is the tomb of Queen Maeve, a famous figure from Irish mythology.
To get there, there are two trails. We opted for the easiest since steps and walkways were erected to facilitate the ascent to the top of the mountain.
Seems the other trail would be more steep and slippery.
However, easy doesn't mean the top is easily accessible. This is actually about a 2 hour round trip hike. The rise is constant.
During our passage, the fog was very dense and the wind was visibly raging. This did not prevent us from continuing the climb to the top.
On a clear day, the panorama is simply splendid. At the top, the fog was so dense that you got lost in it.
On our return, the fog had rather dissipated at the base, allowing us to have the pleasure of discovering magnificent places.

I sat 10 ft from the summit on Aug 23, 2018 during the Warriors Race. I sat with my shoes off and feet in the heather applauding, when a young man went down and hit his head on a rock. I ran to him and waited for help. I hadn't been a first responder in well over a decade. There were two men and myself for a while. Others came later. But, all thanks goes to these two good men. A time later, our young warrior was airlifted out. The first man on the scene made that wise decision. It seemed like forever . But how I admired the those two men. Their sincere care and concern.
I decided not to walk the 10 ft to the top. It didn't seem right seeing this sad end and not knowing if there would be permanent damage. Would he run again? His leg/ ankle twisted.
We parked far and I came upon a man at least late 80's with a mare and colt. He was spry and stepping over a 4 ft wire fence . I stopped to speak to him. I call him "the poet" his first words were , " did you know the land rose from the sea? " And gave me a fossil from his brothers home.
Later that eve I called the hospital to see if the young man was ok. He was . God bless him and all the warriors of Eire. It was good to return home. And that day, I saw what makes us irish so proud. A lasting indefatigable persistence.
On walking up. No matter how old or young . Fit or out of shape don't give up anyone can do it. The summit awaits.

Daniel my good man, you who witnessed a young man hit his head off a rock in the county Sligo. I can't help but wonder, hast thou ever kiss a famous stone down south?

How do they know this is Queen Maeve's tomb? How do they know where she is buried?

    • @johnmcmorrow6022
      @johnmcmorrow6022 4 года назад +3

It's only legend and falls under Irish mythology. Although the surrounding area is rich in archaeology the cairn or tomb has never been excavated.

@@johnmcmorrow6022 Given the size of it, it must belong to someone who was important, so if you're going to have a legend about it, Maeve's tomb is a good one to have.

The great cairn on Knoch na Riadh, the Hill of Kings, was dated by Jacquetta Hawkes to circa 3300 BC. Probably a Danaan tomb lies beneath it. Aodh the Dagda, Ogmeu and Nuadh Airgetlam all died in the second battle of Maig Tuireadh against the invading Fomor, and this is the most likely place for their interment. The terrible expanse of the Plain of Maig Tuireadh, which was the battlefield, lies below the Hill of Kings, with the cemetery of Ceathru Mor that has memorials to the dead dating across centuries. The second battle of Maig Tuireadh raged for three days until the Fomor, learning that the Danaans were healing their casualties overnight with a mysterious elixir, attacked in the dark. The carnage was terrible, and the Cad Goddeu of Britain and Cathe Maig Tuireadh of Ireland both say that the Danaan warriors were up to their thighs in blood. This was a battle of desperation. Battalions had been rallied from Britain and France as well as throughout Ireland. According to the Danaans, more than 87,000 of the Fomor leaders died, which leads one to wonder how many there were in all; the story is that their fleet had bridged the Irish Sea as they had passed in the north, suggesting that the Old Norse of Scandinavia were on the move. Ceathru Mor was already ancient when its memorials centred on the site where Lios an tSeagail was built circa 3500 BC - the oldest memorial in the area was dated by Goren Burenhult to circa 6400 BC. The Plain of Maig Tuireadh was the natural place for a battle to take place against invaders landing in Sligo Bay. As for Queen Maeve, she lived circa 2000 years ago.

I was curious about the walk up the mountain . What a good path they have made. Shame the weather wasn't better to get the view but it was nice seeing the Cairn touching the clouds. Thanks for posting.

The path is treacherous.. there have been a lot of cases where people have fallen off the boards and the rescue team have had to be called out. It does save wear and tear on the ground, yet many others i've spoken to agree the path design and build is very poor.. still a lovely hike if you TAKE GREAT CARE on the board walk..regards, Peter, Sligo.
