Btw man, you should definitely watch Unthinkable. Rewatching this movie after so many years alongside you reminded me of how similar these two main characters are.
Not sure if you're on the revenge film kick still, but there's an interesting Korean film called "The Man From Nowhere" it's dark and grittier than this with some good cinematography.
@@ИгорьСоколов-й8щ I like the "still" part. They thought they could kidnap his daughter before he did all those things, then he did all those things, and after he did all those things, they STILL thought they could kidnap his daughter.
@@ramudon2428😂very true. But chronologically all those characters existed before Taken so they should really have researched future history before f*cking with him😊
Liam Neeson just shooting that dudes wife and then asking him if he wants his kids to be orphans is one of the coldest "dude not to be messed with" moments I've ever seen in a movie.
In a meta sense, Taken was John Wick before John Wick. It had the same kind of sleeper hit success, it reminded people how great the lead actor is, and it changed how action movies were shot in its immediate aftermath.
This is the PG-13 version. The torture scene with Marko is different in the unrated. The unrated has him stick nails into Marko’s legs and electrocute him through that instead of clipping the chair.
Oh yeah I didn''t catch that it's changed in this version. Did they even distribute a PG version in Europe? I saw the R-rated in movies and the DVD copy is R as well.
This film REALLY disturbs me because this REALLY happens to women, young girls and boys that are kidnapped and taken to certain countries, it's a rabbit hole that is so disturbing that it genuinely scars your soul for a long time. This reminded me why I can't watch these films anymore but I appreciate the increase in public awareness that it brings. Being involved in that "industry" should earn you an automatic death sentence by slow impalement.
This is such a great movie for girls my age to watch, so that they don’t say or do anything stupid that gets them in trouble!! Seriously, we can be too trusting of strangers, and this is a PRIME example of what NOT to do 😂
Sadly these experiences being shown and denounced in movies is considered woke somehow. I am truly scared for humans future when there is so much ignorance in this world.
A friend of my sister that was visiting us was about to do the same thing when we all went out to a bar. She was just drunkenly talking to a group of guys and was about to tell them what hotel she was staying at. I looked like a buzz kill because I stopped her.
Man the first one is sooooooo good, the others are pretty meh, feels dragged out, 2 wasn't bad but 3, woof. Liam Neeson is the man, this and Grey are 2 of my fave roles for him.
Deadpool had that great line about how, at a certain point in the series, you have to wonder if he's just a bad dad because his daughter KEEPS getting kidnapped over and over. :)
@@dlweiss it's a funny joke but doesn't really make sense considering that's not the plot of 2 or 3. In 2, he and his wife get taken. In 3, he gets framed for murder/nobody gets taken
Yeah, the second one is pretty dumb. They make this giant deal about her sucking at passing her driver's test and then the next thing you know she's able to drive a manual transmission around like it's nothing. I don't think I ever even saw the 3rd one.
One thing I absolutely love about this movie is that they don't tie the step-father into the slave ring. I was really afraid they were going to do that at the end and I think it's really refreshing that they didn't. A lesser movie would have.
yeah i actually like the step dad, he clearly cares about his step daughter asking what he can do to help and charts him a private flight to paris probably like 20-30k flight and flies them back to cause you know liam wouldnt make it without the cops catching him at the airport on the way back i mean the man left prints everywhere and shot a cops wife so i imagine he would need a private flight back.
Adding to this- I love that the stepfather, while not a former military man or anything dangerous of that sort, does everything he can to help Liam Neeson save her. Pretty much pays Liam's way to fuck those guys up and save his stepdaughter- Liams daughter- and doesn't hem or haw about "oh gosh why don't we just call the authorities or pay her ransom instead of whatever you're doing oh no golly gosh". I imagine a different movie where Liam and the Stepdad- both elite former military men but from different groups- put aside what differences they might have to band together to fuck up the kidnappers. "Stepdad and Dad Fuck Up Everyone", in theaters near you soon.
I'm so glad you're having a such a good time lately with the reactions bro. I appreciate all the good feelings you put out. At some of my lowest you were the literal only thing in my life saying "I hope you're having a good day, love yourself, or be kind to yourself, etc.". Your overall mood and outlooks kept me afloat on some especially bad days I hope you're doing well and thanks for another great reaction!
I can kinda sympathize with the daughter. I was young and dumb with an overprotective father too. So I did things out of blissful ignorance. Maybe not “go to a different country and follow a band” type of stupid but still lol
Nice James. To me, this movie is a study in minimalism. There's no wasted space at all. The pacing is beyond reproach. That's how you create tension. A well crafted film.
At the end you were saying, "Shoot him! Just shoot him!" I think he waited for the guy to start speaking, because it would mean a slight reduction of focus on the knife and a better chance that the guy wouldn't kill the daughter in his dying moments.
Love this movie, and a great reaction. One of my favorite comedic criticisms to it is in "Deadpool" when he comments that after a certain number of "Taken" movies you have to ask yourself if he is just a bad parent lol.
The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) should be on your list too, it fits perfectly in this kind of genre, like the Bourne franchise does, but keep in mind, it's a real love letter to the 80s action movies! 💥👌🏼🥰 And the sidekick is one of the best actors around, you really like him too, and this is also his favourite movie! 😎 You can check the interview out on RUclips in which he told this, but only after watching the film! 😉✌🏼
Long Kiss Goodnight is one of Samuel L Jackson's favorite roles and shouldn't be missed! "You know what happens when you make an assumption...you make an ass out of you and umption!" LOL, one of my fave lines. Period!
So I love this movie. I love how his character doesn't say much before he executes his plan. But it's one of those movies that played several times right before my daughter went off to study abroad for a year. And I always joke with her that if something like this happens, all the people will hear on the other end of the line. Is me crying begging for them to return her. But as a father, I understand that you do what you need to do to save your child.
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was a pretty big album at the time. And their stadium shows where pretty legendary at this period. But also Liam probably liked them :)
This movie shook things up when it came out. I was in high school. Liam Neeson became a meme overnight seemingly; everyone wanted him to rescue them if they got “taken.”
This movie came out when I was 15. My mum made me and my sister watch it. It definitely terrified us and made us so hyper-conscious not to trust anyone and always be on guard.
This is one of those films that just drips with "badass good guy" energy. That's why it's great. Along with John Wick, Die Hard, and the others you mentioned.
I love your take on first world problems of this movie. I didn't see it before, I knew there was something that I found funny, you put your finger on it hahaha. Well played sir, if that was my wife and kid I would be so saddened I had raised her so
Another great one man. I am still not kidding, you are the best of the best when it comes to movie views. Loved this movie in 08, thanks for bringing back the feel of watching it with someone. Keep up the good work my man.
My absolute favourite part is when Liam Neeson enters the building where all the “Marcos” are located and counts in his mind how many men there are in the building so he’s prepared for how many he has to kill AND how he makes/listens to each one of them talk to find the match to the voice on the phone. The little things make this movie amazing!
Saw this in the theater... was NOT expecting it to be this dark. They pushed pretty far on showing exactly how horrific things are, and you know they didn't show half of what they could. I love that he is absolutely cold blooded in his process as well. I don't care, I will go through anyone and everyone if I have to. Shooting his friends wife... that was next level cold. Completely unexpected.
F' with my family/daughter, F' your family/wife... equality/fairness/revenge/justice/retribution/an-eye-for-an-eye/punishment-that-matches-the-crime/etc is such a wonderful thing and such a great value too
Saw it in the theatre, the daughter's scream as she gets grabbed from under the bed STILL gives me chills ... between this and "Locked Up Abroad" I'm never traveling! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
If you go on an organized tour with a tour guide and a driver of the coach/bus who drives you everywhere and you don't wander off on your own, you should be perfectly fine in basically any country where it's safe to travel. Tour companies won't go to countries where they can't keep you safe.
Definitely a sleeper hit. Came out of nowhere, my friend got it on bootleg dvd, and was like wanna see this movie I got. We watched it and were blown away how good it was. Did not hear being talked about the time it came out. Great action movie
I remember being reeled in by the trailer... I still say "good luck"in my best Marco impersonation to people when they talk about doing tasks that I think are difficult 😂
23:04 cold delivery is actually a badass sounding title for an action movie...especially one where the main characters carries this type of ruthlessness
This will always be a guilty pleasure of mine. Even though Liam neeson is type casted into the same character in basically every movie with the same premise, they never get old and I always get enjoyment from them
Yes, The Grey is a great movie and a few different edits could have been Liam's character 20 or so years later when he is basically done with life. There is also a video I so like by the channel Like Stories of Old where they did a Philosophy of Heroic Suffering that I would recommend.
I love the ending of The Grey even though it admittedly isn't for everyone. Also when James said "cold delivery", all I could think of was Cold Pursuit. Seen too many Liam Neeson films I guess.
I took my late father to this movie while my wife was having her baby shower. My father loved it. Every time I see this movie being played it brings back memories of my dad and my soon to be born son.
This movie is also notable for having a recorded effect on the Tourism decline in Paris the year after it came out. The French tourism board actually had to make a campaign to discuss the movie.
Even Neeson mentioned in an interview he regretted the impact of the film on Paris tourism, apparently many women told him they did not want to visit Paris after watching "Taken" 😱
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie and it was pretty much the monologue on the phone scene and maybe a few other things spliced in. I turned to my friend next to me and said, "I'm seeing that."
I grew up in a small town with only one theater that had one screen and I remember watching this and so many other great films there. Shout out to Mesa Theater.
It's funny that you equate the Eifel Tower to the Statue of Liberty, because the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France. EDIT: Also, if you want to see some old, old school Liam Neeson badassery, check out Darkman from 1990. That movie gave me nightmares when I was a kid.
I think everyone would love to have these particular set of skills, these buddies and these resources. 20:54 LMAO great reaction... the man is on a mission - relentless. Really appreciate you James and your channel. Putting up some great picks.
I don't care how many cuts are in fight scenes, if they have a rhythm, a flow and a logic to them, i can absolutely follow them and understand what's what, basically...
Bro I LOVE this movie. I love this “era” you’re in on your channel right now. Revenge thrillers are some of my favorite turn my brain off movies. Nobody, Equalizer, and now Taken. Love seeing your reactions homie. Would love to see you react to the Daniel Craig Bond movies.
When I first watched this I was on middle school. I just watched it again recently and I cried. As a mother I couldn't imagine being on the phone and hearing my daughter get taken and not being able to help her.
I found your suggestion for a movie name of 'Cold Delivery' somewhat ironic, as Liam Neeson is also the movie 'Cold Pursuit' which wasn't quite as good as this, but i felt it was still good fun. (random tidbit: Cold Pursuit is a remake of a Norwegion film: In Order of Disappearance by the same director)
he Equalizer, First Blood, Taken, lately you're just picking brilliant movies, continuously and without exception, keep it up. If you're interested in a mix of some kind of gritty MacGyver, the Punisher and the Joker, then the movie Law Abiding Citizen (2009) might also be something for you.
Thanks for this and sharing your thoughts and insights. I have seen U2 (as well as other bands) in a lot of counties so can attest to the fun of following a band about on a tour :) As for the Apple thing, well that was Apple showing off more than anything else :) As always, stay awesome, stay genuine... much love
Love how fun this reaction was to watch with you. I think when I first saw it I took it a lot more seriously as I wasn't used to movies like it. But now I can see how hype it is to watch 🤠
This movie was literally made by the phone call. Not just the best part you try to catch when uts on tv but instrumental in marketing this film. One of the best trailers I remember seeing.
Definitely a great movie about a real problem all around the world. Textbook case of what not to do when you travel and raised a level of awareness. Two and three are not quite as good as the original, but still good movies and further the story.
Liam Neeson is from Ballymena in N. Ireland which is about 30 miles from me, and he legit looks like every 50 yr old dad in the area. That's why I find the Taken series so hilarious, I always end up shouting "AYYEEE, GO ON YE BIG LADDDD!!!"
I think the reason you enjoyed this movie so much despite its dark theme is because you are a good person at heart. Like John Wick and the dog, you want justice because of the terrible stuff you want them to be punished.
"construction workers... heck yeah! construction workers...at work... constructing things... building things... from the dirt!" [realizes it's a facade] "Oh this isn't a construction. Ok."
@@BroomMirdon Kim's blonde friend who went with her to Paris (Bryan found her dead, likely from an overdose from being forced to take all those drugs to keep the girls compliant).
I cared. I also cared about the other girls in the other rooms but i'm sure killing most of the dudes there helped out. I think i remember family guy also lolzing about that subject too.
James' comments made this "dark" movie surprisingly hilarious. The weighty decision of whether to let your daughter stay in Paris for a week in a Montmartre penthouse (and follow U2 to several EU cities) -- well, that's not an easy call for a parent to make. I'm glad to see James empathize with such a heavy circumstance ;) Rewatch the moment Brian fires: he's got a clear shot past his daughter's head, just waiting for that split second of distraction -- then boom! before disgusting Mr. Mascara can even speak two words! Shrewd shot.
You should really look at the long kiss goodnight, what memorable performances by all the actors involved and the action is absurdly well done. You want some cold line delivery, highly recommend it.
Loved watching your reactions to this film.. Liam is one if the few actors that could pull it off so successfully. I really believe in what his charecter is doing when the situations arise. Would also recommend Grey with Liam in it, as well as Jack Reacher - more of a who done-it with a bunch of espionage tossed in
LOL that little improvised industrial song. Please can someone make a hardcore industrial metal remix of that? I don`t know why but that part killed me XD
If you haven't seen it yet is Law Abiding Citizen. Such a great story and similar as far as the brutality and craftiness of the main character. So good.
I remember my room-mate renting this from Blockbuster on a whim. I had ordered a humongous pile of take-out Chinese food, and it ended up going cold because I spent the final 45 minutes of the movie with the fork halfway to my mouth.
This movie certified the “old guy, action hero” genre was box office gold and is why Liam has had a major resurgence over this past decade. A lot of his characters are similar but most of the movies are fun. I would recommend going through the Taken movies as the plot makes sense for each. Also I think you’d love The Grey with Liam

The final scene was an example of the Corben Dallas School of Negotiation. Bam, head shot!..."Anybody else wanna negotiate?"
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie and it was pretty much the monologue on the phone scene and maybe a few other things spliced in. I turned to my friend next to me and said, "I'm seeing that."
Love your reactions man!
Cheers!!
3 phones later and I still can’t get rid of that album. Lol
grew up watching it and always got to watch it with my dad
Liam kills it. Been a huge fan of this movie ever since it came out
I love how he waits for the guy at the end to speak before shooting him.
I don't care how many cuts are in fight scenes, if they have a rhythm, a flow and a logic to them, i can absolutely follow them and understand what's what, basically...
Another 30min well spent, thanks for this 💜🙏
Ayyy anytime :)
This movie is a classic so damn good
Edit 9:37 I laughed for a good minute over the customer service line wow 😂
I found your suggestion for a movie name of 'Cold Delivery' somewhat ironic, as Liam Neeson is also the movie 'Cold Pursuit' which wasn't quite as good as this, but i felt it was still good fun. (random tidbit: Cold Pursuit is a remake of a Norwegion film: In Order of Disappearance by the same director)
"Cold delivery", that''s priceless.
I highly highly recommend the movie "the kiss of the dragon" with jet Lee and Bridget fonda. That movie is also very dark, but absolutely amazing.
he Equalizer, First Blood, Taken, lately you're just picking brilliant movies, continuously and without exception, keep it up.
If you're interested in a mix of some kind of gritty MacGyver, the Punisher and the Joker, then the movie Law Abiding Citizen (2009) might also be something for you.
Fantastic movie, seconded!
Thanks for this and sharing your thoughts and insights. I have seen U2 (as well as other bands) in a lot of counties so can attest to the fun of following a band about on a tour :) As for the Apple thing, well that was Apple showing off more than anything else :) As always, stay awesome, stay genuine... much love
14:38 BARS!
On the real, loved your reaction! Keep it up!
Love how fun this reaction was to watch with you. I think when I first saw it I took it a lot more seriously as I wasn't used to movies like it. But now I can see how hype it is to watch
🤠
This movie was literally made by the phone call.
Not just the best part you try to catch when uts on tv but instrumental in marketing this film.
One of the best trailers I remember seeing.
"damn he just got knocked out its a shame" bro you're funny af hahaha
“Burn down something that is equivalent to the Statue of Liberty” - fun fact Gustavo Eiffel worked on both of them
Definitely a great movie about a real problem all around the world. Textbook case of what not to do when you travel and raised a level of awareness. Two and three are not quite as good as the original, but still good movies and further the story.
You totally just reminded me of the time U2 put the random album on my phone. That's crazy haha
Never mess with Liam Neeson!!
"I told you I would find you." Few lines have made me want to cheer more. :D
"construction workers... heck yeah! construction workers...at work... constructing things... building things... from the dirt!"
[realizes it's a facade]
"Oh this isn't a construction. Ok."
My thoughts at the end: "So no one cares about Amanda?"
RIP
Who?
@@BroomMirdon Kim's blonde friend who went with her to Paris (Bryan found her dead, likely from an overdose from being forced to take all those drugs to keep the girls compliant).
@@BroomMirdon exactly
I cared. I also cared about the other girls in the other rooms but i'm sure killing most of the dudes there helped out. I think i remember family guy also lolzing about that subject too.
Gotta watch Patrice O'neal and Jim Norton discuss Taken back on the O&A show. Absolute gold
Kikkoman Shampoo
This is a very good film but I think it was a missed opportunity to not have his friends help/back him up in the last act.
Cool weapons and cool settings and real emotions. This is classic movie
James' comments made this "dark" movie surprisingly hilarious.
The weighty decision of whether to let your daughter stay in Paris for a week in a Montmartre penthouse (and follow U2 to several EU cities) -- well, that's not an easy call for a parent to make. I'm glad to see James empathize with such a heavy circumstance ;)
Rewatch the moment Brian fires: he's got a clear shot past his daughter's head, just waiting for that split second of distraction -- then boom! before disgusting Mr.
Would also recommend Grey with Liam in it, as well as Jack Reacher - more of a who done-it with a bunch of espionage tossed in
“That’s amazing … two seconds later oh my god that’s terrible” lolll
Another great video James! However I don’t think that’s the dude from Tremors tho!!
Napoleon Dynamite 🧨
@@JamesVSCinema oh shit yeah it was Uncle Rico bro nice catch!!
LOL that little improvised industrial song. Please can someone make a hardcore industrial metal remix of that? I don`t know why but that part killed me XD
Maggie Grace(Kim) is also in "Knight And Day," with Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise.
on the excessive cuts it gets worse in the sequels there's a legendary scene where Liam jumps a fence, 14 cuts in 6 seconds, but the first one or cool
And the "Father of the century" goes to...
Great film. Must to see - "The grey" with mr. Nison too.
Honestly, Taken 2, while probs not as good, is still a banger. Really well done sequel.
Non-Stop is another cool movie with Liam Neeson, i'd recommend it as well
This genre has been around for a while. Death Wish with Charles Bronson is another good one.
Luc Besson helped write the movie, who wrote The Professional and the Fifth Element
"Who is getting taken that many times?" is a golden question.
