Before watching, when I saw that this review was more than 18 minutes long ( which is a bit above average for Tom's), I told myself that he would either like the game a lot or trash it. In both cases, the video would be interesting to watch. So, I did watch it and was glad the game seemed good. I had this one in my wishlist for a while now so I probably will buy it now that I hear that it's actually good. Thanks for the great review, Tom.
Tom nails it - the theme is thin, and the game isn't original, but the mechanics are so polished, balanced, and tight that it's still a great game. Good art too. My favorite euro of the last year.
Exactly - although my personal verdict swings into the opposite direction. I disliked the game with a passion. Everything works well and usually I'm all for mechanism-over-theme, but the lack of theme here bothered me. Also it's the umpteenth typical mid-weight worker-placement euro we got in 201x. For me this was one too many. Annoyingly dull - like Splendor spread over 2h.
On first impression I thought this game was going to be a retread of Grand Austria Hotel with some slight twists. Thanks for sharing enough detail so that I can see that it really is quite different. I am much more interested in it now.
Could we get an updated list of Tom Vasel's favorite euro games? I still remember his review of Puerto Rico. W/o that review I don't think I would've ever tried any eurostyle games. Not that it was a particularly exciting review, I could just tell by the way he was talking about the game that he was indeed actually having a lot of fun playing at the time. It wasn't just a sales pitch, he thoroughly enjoyed playing! I would love to hear Tom's current thoughts on euro games today, be the game is 5, 10, 15 years old - it would just be cool to hear how that list has changed over the years.
Having played it several times, did you find that GAH is amazing at two players but awful at higher player counts? Im interested to see if Lorenzo is better with 3 or 4 players
I'm happy, that I'm not the only one, really liking the box / board art. Not everything needs to have flashy / modern / in your face graphics. Sometimes, less is more, and I think this game shows that off perfectly.
seems like a descendant of Lancaster?! Knights of various levels with utilization of squires vs. die-factored pawns with assistants; total military point track vs battle points in overseas wars; faith vs laws, etc... I wonder If I have Lancaster (and expansions) do I even need this game on the shelf next to it?
I love Lancaster, but this doesn't really seem very similar at all. Lancaster is basically an auction game with some voting. This is more of a worker placement game where you have to adjust on the fly. I don't really think they are that similar, but I doubt it is better then Lancaster. It might be better at 2 players though.
Lancaster is an end-of-turn resolve game, where you can top the strength of someone's worker to claim the spot. Lorenzo is an instantly resolve game, where if you can get the required strength worker, you take the action immediately.
I hate the faith track (and its even a copy of the emperor track in GAH, so its unoriginal). It reminds me of the feed your worker, which we reeeally dislike.
The game just looks and feel so drab. I mean the cover alone is an epitome of boring. Why these euros always have to have the most boring and dull themes? This is coming from CMON, couldn't they come up with a more interesting setting?
It wasn't their game. It's an import from Italy they are publishing for US distribution. It's probably their best game. I do prefer more interesting themes, but the gameplay in most of their mini-fests is mediocre or bad.
Tom, love your video and all, but you really should stop to bring cards close to the camera: they are out of focus and really unconfortable to watch. I understand you want us to see them, but we don't really see them anyway...
I don't even pretend that, I understand they make TONS of video every week and it's ok to me they try to keep everything at the minimum, I respect that, I love their video production, I can find everything I need. I would just like Tom video to not have this blurry madness. It really makes me uncofonrtable watching it: I've closed some of its video cause of it.
This is the thing I don't understand either. They are aiming for a better quality video, they have 4 people working, one a full time editor. Just make the review normally, point the cards on board, and put the card picture to side of the video on editing phase. Looks better and everyone can see the cards.

Using the dice values to determine what you can take reminds me of Castles of Burgundy. I think i'll like this one.
Brad M Me too.
I'm with you
Brad M Plus the "Assistants" to alter their numbers.
I like it much more than CoB. But YMMV :)

I found this, www.dicetower.com/content/dice-tower-top-10s, but worker-placement, eurostyle wasn't there
Man, now I don't know if I should get this or Grand Austria Hotel. Opinions?
Muy interesante
I think I'll stick with Grand Austria for now. Thanks for the review!

Thanks for great video
There's nothing wrong with the box, in fact it looks gorgeous.

Agree box art is brilliant.
May 17th U.S. release date. I'm getting it!
If you have someone in the play group who is AP, will this really drag out the game?
yes
????
I don’t Know of any turn based games that AP players don’t drag out.

If I own and love Coimbra, is there a reason to also own this?
I think theyre different enough to own both. I like lorenzo better
Absolutely!!! I own both and i like lorenzo better
Dang, the Pope is brutal 😂

I like Euros but man, this looks so drab.
Secretivity?

Not sure if CMON would have an author on the books to make a game like this. This is a Cranio game.
Please paint that white wall!

WEll seeing them is helpful, but they could add the card shots in in editing.

"to pretend" ("fare finta di") is an English false-friend to an Italian speaker :-)
You wanted to use "to demand" ("pretendere")
I don't understand what you mean. It takes a few seconds to focus but I can read the cards and it's helpful to see them.
This is the thing I don't understand either. They are aiming for a better quality video, they have 4 people working, one a full time editor. This is honestly one of the most boring euro games I’ve played ever. Nothing about it is great.
