There are many questions regarding context, so here it it: I was invited to attend a fundraiser sparring session for Riley War Machine. I knew Kru Clifton would be there, as the gym owner told me he would be. Being a content creator, I wanted to get some rounds in with Clifton as he's a 5x World Champ. When I arrived, I personally introduced myself and requested 3 rounds as it was an honour to meet him, to which he agreed. That was all that was mentioned. Now his intensity in sparring was too hard for my personal liking, and in hindsight I should have walked away. At the end of the day, I did want to make content with him, but I didn't think to clarify/mention "light sparring only". I just assumed he would have responded with the same level of power knowing his experience and skill level. I want to begin by saying that I don't think you were responsible for Kru Clifton's intensity level, in any way. I think someone of his experience should have the self control and lack of ego to match his sparring partners' intensity. With that said, I think there's also room to communicate during sparring and ask to go less hard. If that doesn't work, it makes it a lot easier to walk away and find a different partner. Well, in my experience at least. I hope that this is Kru Clifton on a bad day, otherwise I'd be very hesitant to train anywhere he teaches.

Hi Jeff, Once again thanks for such an awesome display of sparring technique, combos (and sweeps), and especially STAMINA after having survived the rather RUDE display of poor sparring etiquette on behalf of Kru Clifton, who (with his obvious experience and extreme weight advantage) did NOT need to use so much power in some of his techniques on you! (PAINFUL watching those Elbows slip through, and hope you are OK). However, you really showed superb technique and conditioning to follow up that needless "massacre" with the next several awesome rounds with his students afterwards, where you obviously dominated within your own weight class. He was just calling the elbow there. You can see that he pulls it and taps the shoulder with the elbow when he could have uppercut-elbowed him in the jaw.
@@AbitCoD at my old gym when we would spar with elbows, we would always call them. I’ve sparred with some of his students at other gyms and they also do the same. The up elbow was definitely pulled and intentionally didn’t connect at all with the head.
@@Kwert 3:48 stop defending this stupid behavior. Elbows in sparring against a lighter opponent is bad etiquette. He pulled the one ur talking about but the one right after wasn’t pulled.
This was a frustrating watch! The first big elbow that dazed you could easily have been a nosebreaker considering the power/urgency that he decided to use ... totally unnecessary. Then right after, he throws another elbow that barely grazes the side of your head, and goes "you got elbowed again" lol like congrats dude you want a medal for that? And right after that a potential KO elbow right on the chin. Not to mention during round 3, all of the shots from the both of you are super light and then out of nowhere he throws a super explosive middle kick. Like WTF? Obviously switching up the pace is a good tactic for landing stuff, but doing it to that extent, especially considering the weight discrepancy, is not just disrespectful, it's outright dangerous. This guy ... attempting to assert dominance over his guests in such a rude manner. Disgraceful!
I've had a bad sparring session like this one, this week which gave me a broken nose and it was both side's fault that we escalated the situation and no one was eager to deescalate only because of our egos. In my opinion, it is good to push our limit in sparring sometimes but it should be under our control and we have to be very careful with the situation. Stay safe and strong!

Jeff longtime fan of you Seth and H2H. This guy's sparring etiquette was wild. Do you find that often in champions or no? I gotta admit sometimes intensity level gets turned up when anyone spars but this seemed oddly paced on his part
I got knocked out sparring a heavyweight with pro fights who sometimes didn't hold back. After the first shots I knew I was in trouble. The coach wanted to "test me", like wtf dude test if I can get CTE? Unlike him, I'm not a pro and I know the difference. Never trained there again. Jeff, having said this, think the guy got ticked twice: once when you tried the sweep and at 5:04 (check his reaction). Regardless, you got to be really petty at his level to take offense. He is the one who should have said something.
Always sad to see a guy as experienced and accomplished as Clifton STILL need to be humbled this late in the game. Probably a decent dude once the gloves are off as most fighters are but damn man, full crank elbow after a failed sweep? Looks like he pulled you into it JUST to make sure it hurt you too lol fkin wild. This further plays into my theory that guys see you walk into the gym with a cameraman and then think they have to show out. There's no way he's busting up other dudes like this in that gym on the regular so you can assume something set him off. Whether it was the sweep attempt or your very presence, no idea.
I appreciate reading these comments about bad training etiquette. I saw the same thing at a few dojos I used to train at where the head coach feels he needs to prove he's alpha and goes hard on lower belts or even elbows the other coach in the nose when she accidentally nudged him when they were demonstrating a bjj move. Another place another student with a few years of training on me tried breaking my arm with an arm bar before I had a chance to tap and then the coach blamed me for not tapping sooner. Part of why I stepped away from martial arts. Too many muscle heads with huge egos.

This also reminds me of my experience with kickboxing. I went to a local club for about a year. The coach had the same temperament and Clifton here.
One day we had a small class, the other students were gassed but i was prepping for a tournament so i asked rhe coached if he would mind going an extra round with me.
Uknown to me , he took that as a challenge and proceeded to go 100% with me, kicking me in the groin reapeadly until I gave up. Then yelling at me never to challenge him again.
I was in excruciating pain and extremely confused, when I looked around all the other students were confused too. I never went back to that club and it was shut down a month later.

Like WTF? Jeff, having said this, think the guy got ticked twice: once when you tried the sweep and at 5:04 (check his reaction). Regardless, you got to be really petty at his level to take offense. He is the one who should have said something.
But that's what sparring is for, to try out new techniques and experiment, why would he get ticked because of that especially given his experience!
